10day Magical Trip at Port Orleans Riverside Royal Room & Discovery Cove (3/28-4/6)

I've been a long time reader of the forums and I don't post much but considering how much enjoyment I get out of reading everybody's amazing TRs (seriously, some of you are master story tellers :) ), I figured I should pay it forward and share our recent WDW vacation this past Spring Break. So, this is my very first TR so please bear with me if my report seems a bit hard to follow and lacks cohesion.

This was our 3rd trip to WDW and 1st trip for our DD6. Living in Seattle, which is about as far as you can be from WDW, we don’t get the opportunity to get to WDW as often as we’d like considering that Disneyland is only 2 ½ hours away by flight. Our last trip to WDW was back in 2004 before our DD was born when hurricane Charley, a category 4 hurricane went through Orlando at the end of our trip. We were one of the very few lucky people where we were able to rebook our flight out of West Palm Beach (as Orlando Airport was shut down) and secure transportation down to West Palm Beach.

DW: Deona | DD6: Madelyn | ME: Danny

Our WDW trip was a surprise trip for our DD which included a 10day stay at Port Orleans Riverside in the new Royal rooms with a day at Discovery Cove to swim with the dolphins.
Our planning for this trip started back in July of 2011 and we had a few close calls and slip ups but fortunately we were able to keep it a secret until the day we were leaving for the airport for a red-eye flight out of Seattle to Orlando, arriving at POR at 9:30am.

Before we begin our Trip Report, I wanted to share some general comments regarding our trip.

The “Left Rule”:
I remember reading somewhere that when you enter Magic Kingdom at rope drop and look down Mainstreet toward Cinderella’s castle, you’ll notice that more people are walking on the right side of the street than the left side of the street and they called that the “Left Rule”. Meaning that for whatever reason, people at WDW tend to favor right side over the left side. This was absolutely true during our trip where lines on the left side were usually less busy than lines on the right side whether it’s the ride lines, FP ticket lines, or food queue lines.

Speaking of FP ticket lines, here was an interesting observation. I’ve never noticed this before but it was a very common sight during this trip especially on the popular & busy rides where there would be a group of people that would have 1 person wait in each of the FP ticket lines and whoever got to the FP dispenser the quickest, all the others would join that person (I think they were part of a tourist group) with each having a stack of tickets in hand for the FP tickets. This really didn’t bother me at all but it noticeably bothered a few others in the FP distribution lines. I had more fun trying to pick them out in the FP lines and watching for other people’s reactions.

Weather:
The weather was simply AMAZING the entire duration of our trip. Average temperature was in the upper 70s when we arrived, gradually increasing to 90 degrees by the end of our trip with no noticeable humidity that we’re used to during the summer months. We did have 1 thunder & lightning storm on the day of our Discovery Cove excursion. They actually had to close Discovery Cove until the lightning storm passed. It was the typical torrential downpour that you experience during the summer months and then clearing out after a few hours.

Free WiFi:
There was free WiFi at the POR property (with pretty good signal at our room) and for those that care, this was what I logged on the average internet speed:
1Mbit download | 0.20 Mbit upload

Dining Plan:
This was the first time we used a Dining Plan through the free-dining-promo and I would have to say that this is a great plan for people that want a low stress dining experience without having to worry about the individual cost of the food items. It was very nice having your meals pre-paid and being able to enjoy any entrée/ dessert/ drink that you wanted rather than deciding what you’re going to eat based on the cost of the food items. While the Dining Plan is not for everybody, we will definitely add the Dining Plan to our future WDW vacations. Based on our eating habits when we’re on vacation, we most likely would have spent about the same amount on meals & snacks. Just the convenience of not having to worry about the cost of the food while on vacation and being able to order just about anything on the menu is a good trade off and worth it for us.

Most Expensive Counter Service Meal: $45 (lunch) – Sunshine Seasons @ EPCOT
Least Expensive Counter Service Meal: $22 (breakfast) – Riverside Mill Food Court @ POR

Most Expensive Table Service Meal: $130 (dinner) – Princess Storybook Dining at Akurshus @ EPCOT
Least Expensive Table Service Meal: $87 (breakfast) – The Crystal Palace @ Magic Kingdom

Total cost of Snacks, Counter & Table Service Meals (including gratuity): $1360
Breakfast meals by far were the cheapest so if you’re looking for the best bang for the buck on your meal credits, I would recommend using your Meal credits on Lunch or Dinners and using your Snack credits on breakfast.

Now onto the TRIP REPORT !!!

This Raglan Road Guinness dipping sauce was simply to die for. It was like this sugary, sweet sauce that tasted like honey and was the perfect complement to their Brown Irish soda bread. Someone said you can buy this sauce at the gift shop. Had I known, I would have bought a case of it!
IMG_4723-1.jpg

I ordered the Colcannon potato soup, and the Mighty Mixed Grill which was a sampling plate of Lamb Chop, Guinness Banger, Sirloin Steak, Black Pudding, and Chicken & Bacon.
IMG_4772.jpg

The colcannon soup was very good and of course I had to order a Guinness at a Irish pub, right?

DW had the Raglan Risotto with shiitake mushrooms, garden peas, shaved parmesan & rocket lettuce and added grilled chicken.

Madelyn had the kid’s Macaroni Cheese with Dubliner cheese.
IMG_4771.jpg

For dessert we had the Strawberry & Apple Crumble.
IMG_4782-1.jpg

… and Dunbrody Kiss.
IMG_4786.jpg

Dinner came out to $101, food was good and I loved the ambiance and they did a great job of capturing the loud and very pub-like themeing and atmosphere. We got to see the dancers dance twice during our dinner which was a very special treat. My mixed meat sampler tasted really good with each type of meat having unique & different flavors so I really liked the variety there. I didn’t really care much for the Blood Pudding though. The risotto was cooked well and was very flavorful. The macaroni & cheese had a good cheesy flavor to it. The Strawberry & Apple crumble was warm, crunchy and didn’t taste very heavy at all even after such a big meal. The Dunbrody Kiss was like chocolate over chocolate on chocolate. So if you like chocolate, then I’m sure you’ll love it.

After dinner, took more pictures of the World of Disney store knowing we’ll be back for some shopping later in our trip.

We took the boat back to POR took a shot of Downtown Disney as we were departing & reflecting how today managed to go by so quickly.

All in all, today was an amazing day even with the transportation mishap and the 2 ½ hour long thunder and lightning storm causing us to miss 1 big area of Discovery Cove.

As for Quicksilver Tours & Transportation service, needless to say I won’t be using them ever again given their poor customer service, lack of communication and no response to my calls (after leaving 2 voicemails with no callback) on why the mishap happened.

Next up: Day 5: Breakfast with Pooh & friends and a leisurely ride through Port Orleans.

Sorry to hear about the mishap but still, what an amazing experience! Swimming with dolphins is something I've always wanted to do, they are so special :)

Can't wait for more! I'll be having 10 days in Florida next year, so much better than a week ;)

It was great to see a review of Discovery Cove. I definitely want to try and go there on one of our trips . We would probably opt to do the dolphin swim since we have never swam with dolphins before. It is pricey, but isn't everything on vacation! I guess I will have to start saving some pennies! It looks like a really neat place!

Loved your pics from Raglan Road. It is one of those places that I have always wanted to go but haven't yet. I am so hungry after seeing your pics. Don't think I would want the blood pudding, but the other stuff...YUM! The dessert looks so good too. Strawberry apple crumble....Yes Please!!!

Wow! Great trip report! The amount of effort you all put it into the trip is amazing, and it looks like it was well worth it.

Cant wait to read more!

It looks like you’re going during Easter in 2013? Our trip this year during Easter week was amazing! Perfect weather and the crowds weren’t as bad as I thought. I think we got spoiled as I’m not sure if we could ever do another summer WDW trip over a Spring trip…

The dolphin swim at Discovery Cove is definitely something that will stick in my memory for years and years and has my highest recommendation if you’ve never swam with the dolphins before and you’re interested in doing so sometime in the future.

Thanks for the complement. Our WDW trip was incredible and the detailed TR is kind of therapeutic for me as it lets me reminisce all the amazing things we experienced at our recent WDW trip.

loving your trip report!
Welcome and thanks for following along!!

Day 5 (Sunday): Breakfast with Pooh & friends and a leisurely ride through Port Orleans.
Logged 4.16 miles on the Pedometer (9,767 steps) for the day.
Today was going to hit 90 degrees, definitely the hottest day so far.

Since our arrival day, we have essentially been going full speed from when we wake up to when we go to bed. So for today, we decided to do a half day at MK to hit up the attractions that we didn’t get to do on Day 2 of our trip. The second half of the day was to head back to our hotel and explore and enjoy the PORS property since we never really got to do that yet.

Today started with a special letter from Winnie the Pooh & friends.
7.png

Our original plan was to have an 8am breakfast ADR at The Crystal Palace and get into the parks before it was open so that we could experience MK with no crowds and to have some amazing photo opportunities. It wasn’t until we arrived at WDW and realized that today was the official start of Spring Break week. This meant that MK was open all week at 8am and with EMH, the gates opened at 7am.
Even though we didn’t arrive at rope drop, we arrived around 7:30am which still made for some great photo opportunities.
IMG_4827.jpg

Even though it looks pretty crowded, the crowds really thinned out by the time you got through Main Street USA.
IMG_4838.jpg

Being at MK at 7:30 with low crowds also meant no lines for character photos.

Once we got in, it was FRIENDSHIP DAY CELEBRASHUN !!
IMG_4899.jpg

The restaurant was EMPTY. Which mean all the yummy food all to ourselves!!
And having such an early ADR meant that we got a lot of quality time w/ the characters. We probably saw each of the characters about 3 times during our breakfast.

IMG_4910.jpg

Breakfast came out to $87 dollars and while we got more than our fill of character interaction, the food quality of the buffet was nothing to rave about. The quality was the typical buffet quality food and the selections were pretty standard with bacon, scrambled eggs, fresh made to order omelets, corn beef hash, Mickey waffles, danishes & pastries, yogurt, cereal, etc.

Our server was very attentive and friendly when we arrived (a lot had to do with the restaurant being empty) but as the restaurant started to fill up, we saw less and less of our server. By 9am, the restaurant was at max capacity and we had to flag our server down to get our bill after having waited for some time. By far, The Crystal Palace was the most busiest and the most hectic of all the buffet/ character meals we’ve had the entire trip. Definitely has to be hard being a server at a place that is always crowded with fast revolving customers.

After breakfast, we decided to head over to Adventureland at Tinker Bell’s Magical Nook since it was literally just a hop skip & a jump away from The Crystal Palace right by the entrance to Adventureland.
IMG_4947.jpg

The Tinker Bell’s Magical Nook is divided up into 2 rooms. The first room is the main queue line where theyhave video clips of Tinker Bell’s movies on cleverly disguised flatpanel TVs while you are waiting in the queue. The second room is where Tinker Bell and one of her friend is waiting to meet you. The second room is around the corner so that you can’t see into that room from the main queue room. They only allow a small number of people to go through at a time and the idea behind this is that it creates an air of mystery and a surprise element of not knowing which Tinker Bell’s friend you will meet that day.

Our surprise fairy friend was none other than….

TERRENCE!!

The line for Stitch’s Great Escape! wasn’t long at all so we quickly got in line. Even with it being toned down considerably (when it was Alien Encounter), I can see how this attraction can be pretty intense for the little ones. Madelyn got a little uneasy at certain spots but she handled this attraction like a champ!

It was starting to get really warm and the FP lines for Splash Mountain were a total zoo!
Keeping the “Left Rule” in mind, I headed to the left side of the FP queue lines and once I made it to the far left FP dispenser machine, there were only 3 people in front of me in the FP dispenser machine. Unfortunately, in front of me was one of the tourist groups was in the middle of getting like 30 FPs but my wait time in the FP queue was just a little over 5 minutes.

While I was getting the FPs, the girls grabbed a great location to watch the Celebrate A Dream Come True parade right in front of Pecos Bill. I had a shaded, perfect and unobstructed view of the parade which would make for some great photo and video recording opportunities. However, in a span of a few seconds, in the time it took me to take 2 little steps and grab my video recorder from my camera bag, a family took over the spot that I had been standing for over half an hour. I was a little surprised & shocked initially but I got over it pretty quick as I still had a pretty good view of the parade.

By now, the Spring Break crowds were out in full force, perfect time for us to head back to PORS for some lunch, rest and relaxation. Today was definitely the most crowded day at Magic Kingdom.
IMG_5044.jpg

Once we arrived back at PORS, we decided to head to the Riverside Mill Food Court for lunch since we’ve only eaten breakfasts there. I had the Chipotle BBQ Cheeseburger & fries and strawberry cheesecake, DW had the Classic Turkey Sandwich with chips and Magic Cookie Bar, Madelyn had the Turkey Pinwheel Sandwich with grapes & applesauce.

I love it when they are very generous with the topping on the cheesecake.
IMG_5118.jpg

IMG_5121.jpg

IMG_5119.jpg

The total for lunch including drinks came to $39.
The Chipotle BBQ Cheeseburger was huge as it included bacon & fried onion rings. The burger was made to order so I did have to wait a little bit but I would gladly wait a few minutes for a fresh burger than to get one that has been sitting under a heat lamp. What was lacking in the burger was the inconsistency with the chipotle sauce as you didn’t quite get enough chipotle sauce in every bite. But when you did get a bite that combined the chipotle sauce, bacon, onion ring and meat & bun, the flavor was surprisingly good. Also, the onion rings were thick and wasn’t cooked all the way, which meant that they were a bit hard to chew and when you do take a bite, the entire onion slips out. I did manage to finish the burger and really enjoyed my cheesecake.

Did I tell you that this Chipotle BBQ Cheeseburger is HUGE?!

After a little R&R, we decided to check out the Port Orleans property and what better ways to sight see the PORS and POFQ properties than a horse drawn carriage ride, right?
IMG_5135.jpg

Our horse was named Ivan.
IMG_5137.jpg

The carriage ride is located right outside the Boatwright’s Dining Hall, toward the riverside making it really convenient for guests staying at PORS. Reservations are made over the phone or through the activity center (this is the same place you rent boats, surrey bikes, etc) and they only accept room charge or cash. The carriage rides are operated by a non-Disney company but our carriage driver was extremely friendly, easy to talk to, knowledgeable and seemed to really care for the horses.

Our carriage ride started at 6pm and our driver asked if we wanted to go to French Quarter or the Bayou. Both being great choices, we asked if she was booked at the 6:30 timeslot. She was open so we decided to extend our ride and tour through both the Bayou and the French Quarter.

We rode our way through French Quarter first taking more pictures of the Magnolia Bend mansions along the way.

The Doubloon Lagoon swimming area at FQ was really well themed with a waterslide that had you come out of the Sea Serpant’s mouth along its “tongue” right into the pool.

IMG_5197.jpg

I wish I would have taken more pictures of the Alligator Bayou buildings but it started to rain for a brief moment during our ride through the Bayou so I had put away the camera. So, I’ll try to be more descriptive rather than letting the pictures speak for itself. The rain was actually pretty refreshing as the temperature was still nice and warm. The Alligator Bayou has very distinct & rustic building design than the Magnolia Bend-Mansion type buildings. The buildings are more tan and brown with rustic roofs (some are tin and some are tiled) that resemble something you’d see in rural bayou regions of southern Louisiana. The landscape is more natural with pathways that wind through and around the property with lots of small ponds with lily pads and lush vegetations.

After an amazing hour long carriage ride, we tipped our driver regardless of what the sign had said and made our way over to POFQ’s Sassagoula Floatworks & Food Factory Food Court (wow, say that fast 10 times!!) for dinner. I’d have to describe the Sassagoula Floatworks to be more dark, intimate & laid back feel and maybe less than half the size of Riverside Mill food court. We had dinner around 7:30pm on a Sunday night and it was pretty much empty which was surprising considering that it was the start of Spring Break. I couldn’t tell if we had missed the dinner rush or that it’s just pretty much empty at that time of the day. If the quality of food was any indication, it would have to say we missed the dinner rush (more than at later when I do my quick food review).

The fresh made to order Beignets rank right up there along with the Dole Whips!!
However, what a clean up nightmare! There was literally powdered sugar everywhere at the dining hall. There was powdered sugar on the tables, on the floor, & on the chairs. I can’t imagine what it would be like during a dinner rush.
IMG_5237.jpg

IMG_5244.jpg

IMG_5252.jpg

For dinner, I had ordered the Fried chicken & rib combo with a side order of Cajun rice, boiled greens and corn bread. DW had the meatball sub sandwich with pasta salad and Madelyn had Mac and cheese with grapes. And we had Beignets for dessert.

The total for dinner came to $41 after drinks and I’d have to say the best part of my entrée was the boiled greens.
Regardless of what it looked like, it had a ton of flavor almost like a sauerkraut with a kick that tasted good warm or cold and was a perfect complement to the meal and I seriously could have had an entire plate of that. The fried chicken was fatty and greasy with the skin sliding right off the meat. However, the skin was very tasty with a little Cajun kick to it. The rice was lukewarm and dry and it tasted like they put in powered Cajun spice mix and it was as if it wasn’t mixed in all the way. It certainly didn’t taste fresh and certain bites were very salty and certain bites were bland. But the worst part of my entrée was the ribs. I got 4 pieces of ribs and I was able to eat only 1 ½ pieces before I gave up as the rest were just inedible. It was incredibly dry and tough almost like the consistency of beef jerky as if I got the last batch of ribs in the warmer. This was disappointing as the quality of food we experienced at Sassagoula Floatworks was completely different from our experiences at Riverside Mill.

The beignet was exactly what I had envisioned to be. It was fresh & warm, crispy on the outside and light and fluffy on the inside with tons of powdered sugar on top. You seriously could NOT eat this without getting powdered sugar all over your fingers, your face, your hands and all over your plate and table.

After dinner we walked back to our room which was a very nice and leisurely 10 minute walk and Madelyn promptly fell asleep in her bed.

I could almost see a smile on her face as she’s sleeping.
