10day Magical Trip at Port Orleans Riverside Royal Room & Discovery Cove (3/28-4/6)

I've been a long time reader of the forums and I don't post much but considering how much enjoyment I get out of reading everybody's amazing TRs (seriously, some of you are master story tellers :) ), I figured I should pay it forward and share our recent WDW vacation this past Spring Break. So, this is my very first TR so please bear with me if my report seems a bit hard to follow and lacks cohesion.

This was our 3rd trip to WDW and 1st trip for our DD6. Living in Seattle, which is about as far as you can be from WDW, we don’t get the opportunity to get to WDW as often as we’d like considering that Disneyland is only 2 ½ hours away by flight. Our last trip to WDW was back in 2004 before our DD was born when hurricane Charley, a category 4 hurricane went through Orlando at the end of our trip. We were one of the very few lucky people where we were able to rebook our flight out of West Palm Beach (as Orlando Airport was shut down) and secure transportation down to West Palm Beach.

DW: Deona | DD6: Madelyn | ME: Danny

Our WDW trip was a surprise trip for our DD which included a 10day stay at Port Orleans Riverside in the new Royal rooms with a day at Discovery Cove to swim with the dolphins.
Our planning for this trip started back in July of 2011 and we had a few close calls and slip ups but fortunately we were able to keep it a secret until the day we were leaving for the airport for a red-eye flight out of Seattle to Orlando, arriving at POR at 9:30am.

Before we begin our Trip Report, I wanted to share some general comments regarding our trip.

The “Left Rule”:
I remember reading somewhere that when you enter Magic Kingdom at rope drop and look down Mainstreet toward Cinderella’s castle, you’ll notice that more people are walking on the right side of the street than the left side of the street and they called that the “Left Rule”. Meaning that for whatever reason, people at WDW tend to favor right side over the left side. This was absolutely true during our trip where lines on the left side were usually less busy than lines on the right side whether it’s the ride lines, FP ticket lines, or food queue lines.

Speaking of FP ticket lines, here was an interesting observation. I’ve never noticed this before but it was a very common sight during this trip especially on the popular & busy rides where there would be a group of people that would have 1 person wait in each of the FP ticket lines and whoever got to the FP dispenser the quickest, all the others would join that person (I think they were part of a tourist group) with each having a stack of tickets in hand for the FP tickets. This really didn’t bother me at all but it noticeably bothered a few others in the FP distribution lines. I had more fun trying to pick them out in the FP lines and watching for other people’s reactions.

Weather:
The weather was simply AMAZING the entire duration of our trip. Average temperature was in the upper 70s when we arrived, gradually increasing to 90 degrees by the end of our trip with no noticeable humidity that we’re used to during the summer months. We did have 1 thunder & lightning storm on the day of our Discovery Cove excursion. They actually had to close Discovery Cove until the lightning storm passed. It was the typical torrential downpour that you experience during the summer months and then clearing out after a few hours.

Free WiFi:
There was free WiFi at the POR property (with pretty good signal at our room) and for those that care, this was what I logged on the average internet speed:
1Mbit download | 0.20 Mbit upload

Dining Plan:
This was the first time we used a Dining Plan through the free-dining-promo and I would have to say that this is a great plan for people that want a low stress dining experience without having to worry about the individual cost of the food items. It was very nice having your meals pre-paid and being able to enjoy any entrée/ dessert/ drink that you wanted rather than deciding what you’re going to eat based on the cost of the food items. While the Dining Plan is not for everybody, we will definitely add the Dining Plan to our future WDW vacations. Based on our eating habits when we’re on vacation, we most likely would have spent about the same amount on meals & snacks. Just the convenience of not having to worry about the cost of the food while on vacation and being able to order just about anything on the menu is a good trade off and worth it for us.

Most Expensive Counter Service Meal: $45 (lunch) – Sunshine Seasons @ EPCOT
Least Expensive Counter Service Meal: $22 (breakfast) – Riverside Mill Food Court @ POR

Most Expensive Table Service Meal: $130 (dinner) – Princess Storybook Dining at Akurshus @ EPCOT
Least Expensive Table Service Meal: $87 (breakfast) – The Crystal Palace @ Magic Kingdom

Total cost of Snacks, Counter & Table Service Meals (including gratuity): $1360
Breakfast meals by far were the cheapest so if you’re looking for the best bang for the buck on your meal credits, I would recommend using your Meal credits on Lunch or Dinners and using your Snack credits on breakfast.

Now onto the TRIP REPORT !!!

One of the travelling shows at Hollywood Studios: Mulch: Sweat n’ Shears
They were actually really good. The lead singer looked and sounded a lot like Fergie from The Black Eyed Peas.

We decided to have lunch around 11:30 to beat the lunch rush crowds and we didn’t want to eat too late as we had ADRs to 50s Prime Time Café at 5pm.
Lunch was at Rosie’s All American Cage came to $38 as I ordered the 1/3 Angus Burger w/ Onion Strings (not onion rings) with fries and Chocolate cake, DW had the Chicken Nuggets, and Madelyn had the Uncrustable with grapes and yogurt.
IMG_4139.jpg

The Angus burger was slightly dry but good flavor having a good balance of sweet pickle slices with fried onions, lettuce and tomato. The Chicken Nuggets were tender, not dry as you would normally experience at fast service, quick turn-around eateries.

Even though it was only 75 degrees at noon, it definitely felt much warmer.
After lunch, we headed over to Tower of Terror wondering if it would be too scary for Madelyn.
You can definitely tell by the look of uncertainty on my face…

OK. Serious question.
Am I the only person that thinks Disney got Jessie’s character neckline completely wrong from how she looks in the Toy Story movies? Meaning, she HAS NO neckline! Like not just in this picture but in ALL the pictures. Like she’s forever stuck in a shrugging position. It kinda freaks me out…

Dinner came out to $72 which was totally in line with what I'd expected for a Table Service meal with great food and an awesome atmosphere.

For this trip, my dessert of choice had been the cheesecake.

Sampler: fried chicken was crispy and tasty breast, pot roast was tender & flavorful, meatloaf was dense, dry and forgettable, mashed potato was average, nothing to rave about.
Cheesecake was ok. Really dense and had a slightly artificial, "plasticky" flavor. It really wasn't too flavorful even with the strawberry topping.

All in all, I felt like we were doing a lot of walking back and forth between areas considering the size of Hollywood Studios and that it only has 6 FP attractions and we didn’t do 3 of the FP attractions (Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular, Rock n Roller Coaster, Lights Motors, & Action!).

Overall, we logged almost 22.5miles in 3 days and our feet were certainly tired, fatigued & sore.

Day 3 at WDW has now come to an end and we still have 7 more days of WDW bliss.

Can this trip get ANY better?

YES IT CAN! So stay tuned for our next installment of our amazing trip!!

Day 4 promises a much slower paced, relaxing day with it being one of the highlights of our trip, albeit a minor mishap at the start of the day.

Next up: Day 4: An All Inclusive Dolphin Excursion

37days? That day is going to be here in a blink of an eye! I’m so excited for you.
I use a Canon Rebel XSi which is about a 4yr old DSLR and the lens is a Canon 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 which I’ve had since I bought my first DSLR over 6yrs ago. Personally, I think the lens is a great all around use lens that is not too big, decent speed, and a good price (selling for about $350 now).

I hope not the time does go by too fast. I have two papers and a final to do before the trip and I'm not ready for that yet. Haha.
We are taking our new Cannon Rebel T3 with us. I'm excited. I think we might have to get a new lens or try to borrow one from my fiance's mom since I think she has that one.
Do you take your night pictures with a tripod cause they look really good?

LOVE the TR so far!! And I love the matching shirts you had on at MK!! Your daughter is adorable!!

Can't wait to see how Discovery Cove is. I've always wanted to do that and we ALMOST did this past trip but we just couldn't swing it financially. Hopefully someday....

Great pics! You look like you're having a blast!!! Can't wait to read more!!!

Can I say I absolutely love your trip report? Your daughter is so cute and your experiences are totally taking me back to when I was that age and at Disney...ahh nostalgia ;). I loved your expression on Tower of Terror. Did she enjoy the ride? She looked a wee bit scared in that photo. It does take some getting used to that first time you go on. Can't wait for the next installment. Discovery Cove is about the only thing we haven't done in Orlando that is a theme park/sort of theme parkish. And I was glad to see you liked POR...it is my favorite moderate resort :)

Hi! Loving your trip report!

Your daughter is adorable! She reminds me so much of my niece, just a little older. My niece is 3 and we are going to be going with her to WDW next summer. Can't wait!

That Ariel is creepy. She looks more like an evil step sister than Ariel!

The bus situation you encountered at PORS is crazy! I have never heard of it being that bad. Too wait more than an hour for a bus is unacceptable. Hope that was remedied throughout the rest of your trip!

Totally agree with you on the Jessie neck or lack thereof placement. Please Disney, give Jessie a neck! Woody has one, why can't Jessie?!

Can't wait to read more!

Yea for your new camera! I am sure your new camera is going to get a ton of use.
Most of my night time pictures are taken without a tripod, even though using a tripod will give you the best results, I don't like carrying around extra weight. I typically lean my shoulder against something sturdy (like a lamp post) to steady my hand then hold my breath and take the shot. Even the slightest movement made by your finger pressing the shutter button may cause your picture to come out blurry so don’t expect to get the perfect night time picture on your first shot, your second or even your third. On average, I keep about 1 out of 5 night time shots I take without a tripod. Most of the Canon lens now comes with Image Stabilizer built in which helps with the camera shake but if you’re going to use a tripod, make sure to turn that off otherwise you may get blurry pictures. I’ve made that mistake way to many times to count. You can also use a short timer setting like 2 seconds to eliminate camera shake while on a tripod (or get a remote shutter controller).

At first I thought the matching shirts would be cheesy but I’m so glad we did it as Madelyn thought it was the coolest thing in the world.
Even though the admission price is cost-prohibitive to many, Discovery Cove is definitely something you should do at least once. Hopefully the next installment of our TR will help you with your future decision.

Excellent photos! I love the food photos! The royal rooms look nice as well. Might consider staying there in January.
Personally, I think the Port Orleans resort definitely has one of the best property themes out of all the other Disney resorts, even better than some of the Deluxe resorts. I would highly recommend it!

She loved the ToT ride. Right after the ride, we just kept talking about how fun the ride was and we took turns talking about which was our favorite part of the ride and kept the excitement up and not focus on any of the scary parts which seemed to have helped tremendously. I think what scared her more was the screaming from other people.
Discovery Cove was a blast. What’s not to like about an all-inclusive park where breakfast, lunch, snacks, alcoholic & non-alcoholic drinks are all included in your price of admission?

Thank you for following along! Luckily, the bus was back to normal just before Spring Break weekend started. I’m sure there might have been a full blown mutiny at PORS if the bus issue still continued through Spring Break.

I can't believe this is your first TR - great job! :so happy:

Along with everyone else, I must chime in and point out the obvious - your daughter is too cute!

Also, thanks for providing such great detail about your meals. While I like to think I've tried many dining options at WDW, there are still too many places left to count. Your reviews are very helpful when thinking about where I may dine in the future.

Day 4 (Saturday): An All Inclusive Dolphin Excursion

Today started with a wakeup call at 7:30am with and the following special letter to Madelyn from Discovery Cove.
6.png

Instead of using taxi service, I had decided to book a Towncar as a special surprise for the family to take us to and from Discovery Cove. We had used Quicksilver Tours & Transportation in our past WDW vacations so I had booked them again about a month in advance. We originally chose Quicksilver instead of Mears or other transportation services because Quicksilver was one of the sponsors for WDWMAGIC.COM Forums. Our pickup time was scheduled for 8am, expecting to arrive at Discovery Cove by 8:30am which would have given us plenty of time to schedule our Dolphin Swim and breakfast. At DC, your dolphin swim time is based on a first come first serve basis and your checkin & dolphin swim registration starts at 8am.

As we walked to our pickup area in front of the lobby, I started getting worried as I didn’t see any Towncar waiting for us… Again, this was supposed to be a special surprise. I checked my iPhone to see if I missed a call or an email from Quicksilver telling me there was some sort of a problem or delay. Getting a little worried that we were going to be delayed in getting checked in at DC (we wanted an early dolphin swim time so that we’d have the rest of the day to play and relax).

So I checked our reservation confirmation and all the information (pickup date, pickup time, pickup location, pickup vehicle, etc) was correct. We did notice a big silver Quicksilver van parked off to the side so as I walked up to the driver, he asks me if I’m “Mr. JIM”?
OH GREAT..! First of all, my name is Danny Kim not Danny Jim. This day is off to a great start…

I had told DW that I had arranged a “special transportation” for us and we won’t be using a taxi. Instead of the surprise Towncar, we got a surprise 10 person Van to shuttle a family of 3 to DC.
IMG_1382.jpg

After confirming that he is our driver, his response when I told him I had specifically booked at Towncar over a month in advance, showed him our confirmation and that I never received any calls or emails, his response was that he had no idea. He got the pickup details that morning but “at least the Van costs more than the Towncar.”

I understand that it’s not the driver’s fault but it’s like going to a Steak restaurant, ordering a steak and then getting a salmon with no explanation why and the only thing the waiter can tell you is that he had no control over the food that came out from the kitchen but at least the Salmon costs more than the Steak.

Keeping my cool as we really had no other option otherwise risk being late to checkin at Discovery Cove, we got into the van trying to not let this mishap affect the rest of the day, off we went to Discovery Cove. We arrived right around 8:30am and waited to get checked in.

Discovery Cove has done an awesome job of creating a tropical/ Hawaiian theme based park, very much on par with the how Disney has done creating their parks. As soon as you enter the Discovery Cove property, you get the feeling that you’ve just stepped into something very different and unique. There are lots of tropical plants and everything just feels clean and refreshing. The checkin line extended out of the lobby but the wait wasn’t too long, maybe 15minutes. Once you enter the lobby, there are approximately 10-12 checkin desks where they take a digital picture of each of your party and each person gets their special DC picture badge with a neck lanyard. Your badge also provides details of your dolphin swim time and location. I can’t remember but I think it also marks if you are 21 or older so that you don’t have to deal with IDs when getting your alcoholic drinks.

The lobby was very roomy with wooden faux straw roof with big windows that let plenty of sunlight in. The ceiling was high with wooden dolphin decorations.

After checkin, you leave the lobby and walk along a short path …

… and finally treated to an amazing and breathtaking views of the Discovery Cove park.

One thing to add is that Discovery Cove allows a maximum of 1000 guests in the park each day so seeing rows and rows of empty lawn chairs are very common.

IMG_4558-1.jpg

IMG_4496.jpg

Discovery Cove is broken into 3 separate areas (soon to be a 4th area: “Freshwater Oasis”)
Wind-Away River: This is known as the “lazy river” that goes around Serenity Bay and the Free-Flight Aviary. The best part is that the river is heated to a very nice and warm 80 degrees!!
The Grand Reef: This is the area where you can snorkel and swim with the ocean sea life like eels, rays, & fishes.
Explorer’s Aviary: Open natural habitat where hundreds of birds are free to roam and there are many staff members that interact and showcase some of their birds.
Coming Soon- Freshwater Oasis: Supposed to showcase the freshwater sea life and sea otters.
IMG_4624.jpg

After grabbing some quick pictures, we headed over to get breakfast.
Breakfast was the typical buffet quality food (often dry & not much flavor) where they serve scrambled eggs, ham, sausage, potatoes, french toast sticks, yogurt, & pastries. This made me appreciate the quality of the food at POR just that much more.
IMG_4482.jpg

IMG_4481.jpg

The dining area is just a plain shaded outdoor area with plenty of space to sit and eat. One thing that was really interesting was that the straws at DC are all made of dense paper instead of plastic which I thought was really cool.
By Day 4, my feet were really tired and very fatigued and I have to tell you, walking barefoot on sand felt sooo good on my feet. It was literally like getting a foot massage with every step.

We headed over to one of the bathrooms to change & to get a locker. The bathrooms were amazingly clean and had neatly aligned piles of towels (instead of paper towel dispensers) available for the guests.

One of many stations to get your vest or a wet suit.
IMG_4509.jpg

Each guest is provided a netted bag that contains a snorkel and mask and special sunscreen lotion that is environmentally friendly and doesn’t have any negative impact to the sea life at DC.
Lockers are provided for free with a key that you put around your neck and inside your vest or your wet suit so that it doesn’t get lost while you’re out swimming.

The “lazy river” was surprisingly calming and soothing. The depth of the river can range anywhere from 3 to 8 feet deep. This is a really lazy river, meaning the flow of river is very slow and you essentially have to swim your way around the river. At DC, there are no floating raft/ mats or floating tubes (for the safety of the sea creatures) but they have plenty of floating pool noodles (made out of more dense almost rubber like materials rather than the flimsy foam noodles) and I highly recommend using so that you’re not having to swim around the entire river. For kids, use of life vests are highly recommended around the lazy river. Some people even got really creative and used 2 noodles, one behind the neck and the other under the knees, effectively creating floating lounge chair.

This is the underwater walking scuba experience called “SeaVenture” (not included in your DC admission). This is an hour long excursion (25min being underwater) where you put on a dive helmet and walk along the Grand Reef to have a much closer experience with the various sea life at the Grand Reef.
IMG_4540.jpg

Coolest invention ever! The big rubber tires made it easier to navigate your strollers around the sand. AND they even have ones for wheel chairs with bigger rubber wheels.

Really cool showers and foot washes.
And the water for the shower and foot washes were nice & warm!

The Dolphin Swim Experience Trainers meeting
IMG_4519.jpg

The anticipation is definitely building…
IMG_4488.jpg

For the dolphin swim experience, you sign up for a 45minute session with about 10 or so people in your group. You show up to your meeting area (which is good sized outdoor hut that hold enough for 3 groups) and spend about 15minutes watching a short video and filling out paperwork. At this point, you are introduced to your trainer and the trainer assistant. You are also told there is a team of photographers and videographers taking pictures and videos of you the entire duration of the dolphin experience. They are off to the side and in the water to get up and close for your pictures and take video of the entire 30minute session. They don’t allow cameras or waterproof cameras into the water as the dolphins will think they are toys or food and may try to ingest them.

Your group is then escorted to the water and we stand in a line in waist deep water (Madelyn was essentially floating in the water w/ her life jacket on and me holding onto her so she doesn’t float away) and we are introduced to our dolphin. Discovery Cove’s philosophy is that they never force their dolphins to do any tricks and to interact with humans. If the particular dolphin is distracted or would rather play with their dolphin friends, they simply call up a different dolphin to interact with the group!
After a short spiel from the trainer about their dolphins and Discovery Cove, the dolphin interaction begins by the dolphin swimming back and forth along the line of people so that everybody can get their turn at feeling the dolphin as they swim by. And they do this like 15times, stopping along the way to show their blowholes, ears, tongue fins, etc. Each person is also given the opportunity to feed the dolphin a fish! How cool is that!?
Toward the end of the session, you swim out about 30feet and wait for the dolphin to come swim next to you. Then you hold onto their top and side fins and let the dolphin swim you back to shore. I was simply amazed at how powerful the dolphins are.

Our group actually had a young 4 or 5yr old dolphin that had to be swapped out with an older dolphin that did swam us back to shore. The trainers were very much in tune with their dolphins and she knew very quickly that our young dolphin was very much distracted as it was spring time which meant they were very “playful” at this time of the year. Literally in a heartbeat, an older dolphin “Maria” came over and was interacting with us getting ready to swim out and bring us back to shore. Rather than being rushed through the experience, the trainer spent more time introducing us to Maria and showing us all the differences between her and the younger dolphin. So we actually got to interact with 2 dolphins during this excursion!!

The sheer excitement & the look of joy in her face was definitely worth the cost…
img026.jpg

img028.jpg

After an amazing experience with the dolphins, we headed to the dining hall for some lunch.
I had the shrimp jambalaya with meatballs & fries (I know I know... It’s a weird combo but I actually got 2 entrees), DW had salad and chicken strips, Madelyn had hotdog & fries, mixed fruit cups and an assortment of desserts to share for the family.
IMG_4498.jpg

Lunch was definitely much better than breakfast with the highlight being the live Jamaican music which was very fitting to the atmosphere.
IMG_4499.jpg

After our tummies were full of food, we decided to go around the lazy river again before we headed to The Great Reef to snorkel w/ the live sea animals.
That’s when the sky started to darken as you’d often see during summer days. Lightning was reported in the area so they had everybody evacuated to the dining area and wait out the thunder and lightning storm.

And thunder and lightning and rain it did!
Of course I had just put our camera and my iPhone back into our locker and all I had was our underwater camera. And wouldn’t you know it, the battery was dead and the spare battery was in my camera bag, in the locker. It was truly an amazing sight where it rained like buckets of water being dumped over us and wind that felt like the roof was going to blow off and all the debris flying around and branches & leaves falling down. The storm lasted for about 2 ½ hours and finally we were allowed to get back into the water. We had just over an hour till our pickup time which meant that we wouldn’t have enough time to do the snorkeling at The Great Reef. :-(

So we got changed and grabbed some slushies on our way to the Aviary.

A three toed Sloth waving us farewell as we leave the lobby. A sad part of the day indeed…

We got the photo & video Dolphin package and paid just under $150.00. While I believe it is incredibly overpriced, you really don’t have any other options to properly capture your dolphin encounter experience so you practically have no other choice than to fork over the money and buy it if you want memorabilia of your dolphin experience.

From a cost perspective of the DC experience, if you factor in an average of $350 per person for the Discovery Cove with Dolphin Swim experience, it is hard to justify spending that much for a 1day excursion. However, if you skip the dolphin swim, the cost per person goes down to a much easier to swallow $170 per person but I think the dolphin swim was definitely the highlight of the day. Since I have never swam with the dolphins before, this was definitely the most magical and wonderful way to experience it in a setting that is so serene and stress free environment to the animals and the guests.

PLUS, your Discovery Cove admission also includes a 14day pass to SeaWorld and Aquatica that must be used in a 14day period. We had all intention of going to SeaWorld for a day but unfortunately, we never made it there as we wanted more time at WDW.

We arrived at Downtown Disney and took some pictures on our way to Raglan Road.
