10day Magical Trip at Port Orleans Riverside Royal Room & Discovery Cove (3/28-4/6)

I've been a long time reader of the forums and I don't post much but considering how much enjoyment I get out of reading everybody's amazing TRs (seriously, some of you are master story tellers :) ), I figured I should pay it forward and share our recent WDW vacation this past Spring Break. So, this is my very first TR so please bear with me if my report seems a bit hard to follow and lacks cohesion.

This was our 3rd trip to WDW and 1st trip for our DD6. Living in Seattle, which is about as far as you can be from WDW, we don’t get the opportunity to get to WDW as often as we’d like considering that Disneyland is only 2 ½ hours away by flight. Our last trip to WDW was back in 2004 before our DD was born when hurricane Charley, a category 4 hurricane went through Orlando at the end of our trip. We were one of the very few lucky people where we were able to rebook our flight out of West Palm Beach (as Orlando Airport was shut down) and secure transportation down to West Palm Beach.

DW: Deona | DD6: Madelyn | ME: Danny

Our WDW trip was a surprise trip for our DD which included a 10day stay at Port Orleans Riverside in the new Royal rooms with a day at Discovery Cove to swim with the dolphins.
Our planning for this trip started back in July of 2011 and we had a few close calls and slip ups but fortunately we were able to keep it a secret until the day we were leaving for the airport for a red-eye flight out of Seattle to Orlando, arriving at POR at 9:30am.

Before we begin our Trip Report, I wanted to share some general comments regarding our trip.

The “Left Rule”:
I remember reading somewhere that when you enter Magic Kingdom at rope drop and look down Mainstreet toward Cinderella’s castle, you’ll notice that more people are walking on the right side of the street than the left side of the street and they called that the “Left Rule”. Meaning that for whatever reason, people at WDW tend to favor right side over the left side. This was absolutely true during our trip where lines on the left side were usually less busy than lines on the right side whether it’s the ride lines, FP ticket lines, or food queue lines.

Speaking of FP ticket lines, here was an interesting observation. I’ve never noticed this before but it was a very common sight during this trip especially on the popular & busy rides where there would be a group of people that would have 1 person wait in each of the FP ticket lines and whoever got to the FP dispenser the quickest, all the others would join that person (I think they were part of a tourist group) with each having a stack of tickets in hand for the FP tickets. This really didn’t bother me at all but it noticeably bothered a few others in the FP distribution lines. I had more fun trying to pick them out in the FP lines and watching for other people’s reactions.

Weather:
The weather was simply AMAZING the entire duration of our trip. Average temperature was in the upper 70s when we arrived, gradually increasing to 90 degrees by the end of our trip with no noticeable humidity that we’re used to during the summer months. We did have 1 thunder & lightning storm on the day of our Discovery Cove excursion. They actually had to close Discovery Cove until the lightning storm passed. It was the typical torrential downpour that you experience during the summer months and then clearing out after a few hours.

Free WiFi:
There was free WiFi at the POR property (with pretty good signal at our room) and for those that care, this was what I logged on the average internet speed:
1Mbit download | 0.20 Mbit upload

Dining Plan:
This was the first time we used a Dining Plan through the free-dining-promo and I would have to say that this is a great plan for people that want a low stress dining experience without having to worry about the individual cost of the food items. It was very nice having your meals pre-paid and being able to enjoy any entrée/ dessert/ drink that you wanted rather than deciding what you’re going to eat based on the cost of the food items. While the Dining Plan is not for everybody, we will definitely add the Dining Plan to our future WDW vacations. Based on our eating habits when we’re on vacation, we most likely would have spent about the same amount on meals & snacks. Just the convenience of not having to worry about the cost of the food while on vacation and being able to order just about anything on the menu is a good trade off and worth it for us.

Most Expensive Counter Service Meal: $45 (lunch) – Sunshine Seasons @ EPCOT
Least Expensive Counter Service Meal: $22 (breakfast) – Riverside Mill Food Court @ POR

Most Expensive Table Service Meal: $130 (dinner) – Princess Storybook Dining at Akurshus @ EPCOT
Least Expensive Table Service Meal: $87 (breakfast) – The Crystal Palace @ Magic Kingdom

Total cost of Snacks, Counter & Table Service Meals (including gratuity): $1360
Breakfast meals by far were the cheapest so if you’re looking for the best bang for the buck on your meal credits, I would recommend using your Meal credits on Lunch or Dinners and using your Snack credits on breakfast.

Now onto the TRIP REPORT !!!

Day 2 (Thursday): A Day at the Most Magical Place on Earth & a Date with Cinderella
Logged 8.78 miles on the Pedometer (20,620 steps) for the day.

We had a 6:15am wake up call to make sure we had enough time to get ready, eat breakfast at Riverside Mill food court and have enough time to get to Magic Kingdom for the rope drop as today was EMH (8am).

For each day of our trip, we had prepared a special letter from a special Disney character that provided information on the day’s agenda. For today, it was a special invitation from Cinderella to come and have dinner with her and friends at Cinderella’s castle.

4.png

Breakfast at Riverside Mill Food Court was surprisingly tasty! I had ordered the Bounty Platter that included Scrambled Eggs, Potatoes, Bacon, Biscuit, & a Mickey Waffle. The food tasted fresh instead of processed that you typically experience at food courts. The scrambled eggs were light and fluffy, the potatoes had nice seasoning, bacon was nice and crispy and the biscuit and Mickey waffle were tasty. I cleaned off my plate, drank all of my OJ, felt rejuvenated and was ready to take on the World… DisneyWorld that is.

IMG_3389.jpg

The total cost of breakfast was $26.
To use Counter Service meal credits for breakfast is definitely not the best bang for the buck for meals considering lunch/ dinner for Counter Service would cost an average of $35 - $40 for the 3 of us.

IMG_3391.jpg

The temperature in the morning was 63 degrees with sun slowly rising. Certainly nothing to complain about considering it was still 20 degrees warmer than back home.

We waited for about 30 minutes before our bus to MK finally arrived and 15 minutes to get to MK. We arrived just as the rope drop show was ending. I was a little bummed that we missed the show but that quickly faded as soon as we were through the gates.

IMG_3393.jpg

Hard to see in this picture but there was hardly anybody walking on the left side of the sidewalk (the "Left Rule"!). Even with the MainStreet Bakery building being under construction, people are walking on the right side.

Don’t you love how the CMs all stand along the sidewalks of Main Street USA welcoming you to MK?

After some mandatory pictures of Cinderella’s castle, we headed over to Tomorrowland to grab FP to Space Mountain and ride whatever we could walk onto.

Planning ahead for the day, we headed toward Fantasyland as our lunch plan was to eat at Pinocchio Village Haus.

The ever popular Peter Pan ride.
IMG_3557.jpg

By 11am, the temperature was 75 and starting to warm up nicely. We decided to grab lunch sooner rather than later to hopefully beat the lunch rush crowds at Pinocchio Village Haus. We had high expectations as it just seemed like a really cool place to eat.

IMG_3551.jpg

IMG_3553.jpg

We got lucky and were able to get a window seat overlooking the “it’s a small world” ride.
IMG_3543.jpg

One thing that’s different about this ride compared to the one at Disneyland is that it’s indoors! At Disneyland, the waiting line is an outdoor queue.
IMG_3503.jpg

For lunch we had ordered the Penne Pasta w/ meatballs, Cheese Pizza, Side salads, and an Uncrustable with drinks and gelato for dessert. The total cost of lunch was $40.
IMG_3542.jpg

The food was average, nothing to rave about. It tasted exactly how it looks on the picture. Pizza was overcooked and the cheese was burnt, the marinara sauce for the pasta w/ meatballs was not very flavorful and the pasta was overcooked and in little pieces as if I got the last batch of the leftover pasta from the serving station. I don't think we'd be going back any time soon.

Thankfully, this was the last of our poor food experience at WDW so everything is uphill from here.

After lunch, Fantasyland was starting to get pretty crowded so we headed to Adventureland on the pursuit for one thing and one thing only…
IMG_3589.jpg

That jokester Peter Pan was a hard one to get pictures with. He eluded us the both times we tried to get character pictures with so we settled for this picture.

It was about 2pm, 81 degrees (which was almost 40 degrees warmer than back home) and our plan was to do rope drop, power through MK through lunch, head back to POR to rest then back at MK for our 5pm ADR and nighttime parade & fireworks as today was to be a very full day.
And this is where we had planned incorrectly. At Disneyland, you can be out of the parks and back in your hotel in about 15-20min whereas it was taking approximately an hour each way and the fact that the busses seemed to be running slower than usual.

Pictures of balloons are a must for every Disney vacation, am I right?
IMG_3615.jpg

Don’t you love how Disney does an amazing job of creating facades of buildings even when it’s going through renovations?
IMG_3598.jpg

We ended up waiting for about 30minutes for our bus with another 30minute ride on the bus (as our stop was the last stop on the POR bus route) and got to our room at around 3:30pm. So we ended up getting about 30minutes of rest before we needed to head back out to MK for our 5pm ADR.
At this point, we were wondering if it would have been better to have just stayed at MK?
Maybe Yes, maybe No… If we had stayed at MK, it would have made for an extremely long day, having been up since 6am in the morning. We were also concerned at how our Madelyn would hold up with the 3hr timezone change, not getting enough sleep during the red-eye flight to MCO, etc.

Madelyn changed into a dress and we left our room around 4pm and got to the bus station not long after. As we got closer to the bus station, I realized something was off. Something was definitely wrong here. The bus station was full at 4pm in the afternoon on a Thursday. Not just certain bus lines were full but the entire station was full of people waiting for their bus.

Remember on our first day when we were trying to get back to our hotel from MK, we waited for about 45 minutes while 2 POFQ buses came and went? Remember this morning when we missed our rope drop?
I was told earlier that buses should be running every 20 minutes and they would add more buses to the route if it exceeded that time threshold.

I asked one of the people waiting how long they have been there and their response was that they’ve been waiting well over 20minutes and that there were others that have been waiting longer.
At 4:15pm we were told the next bus to MK is not scheduled to come until 4:40pm. It was clear that there were other families that were being late for their ADRs and we were at risk as well!
At this time, we had 45minutes to get to Cinderella’s Castle for our 5pm ADR. There was no way we would make it in 20minutes if we waited for the bus assuming that the bus was actually going to show up on time.

So, we proceeded to head over to the bell hop, called a cab to take us to the Polynesian and monorail’ed it back to MK just in time for our ADR.

For appetizers, we ordered the Rock Shrimp Cocktail and the Royal Tasting of Cheese. (Sorry, I didn't take any pictures of our appetizers as I wasn't really feeling it considering we've had 2 less than average dining experiences already)

Having done Cinderella’s Royal Table experience at every WDW vacation we’ve taken, we’ve come to expect the food to be average and that you were paying more for the experience of eating at Cinderella’s Castle rather than the quality of the food. I was proved wrong as the food was surprisingly delicious!

For our entrees, I ordered the Roasted Beef Tenderloin:
- Sliced roasted beef tenderloin with duchess potatoes, asparagus, and chasseur sauce
IMG_3655.jpg

DW ordered the Friars Stuffed Chicken Breast:
- Asparagus, buffalo mozzarella, and prosciutto stuff chicken breast on top of smothered leeks, artichoke hearts, and sun-dried tomatoes with a drizzle of a chardonnay beurre blanc.
IMG_3656.jpg

DD ordered Cheese Pizza Cut 4 Ways: (my poor attempt at trying to make a plain cheese pizza sound fancy)
- Bread topped with pizza sauce and cheese nicely toasted to perfection.
IMG_3658.jpg

For dessert we had the Almond Cheesecake w/ Lingonberry Jam and Chef’s Dessert Trio.
dessert1.jpg

IMG_3659.jpg

dessert2.jpg

I ate everything that was on my plate and probably could have had another serving of the tenderloin. The tenderloin was cooked just perfectly at medium rare, had great flavor, the asparagus was nice and crunch not soggy and limp. The potatoes were ok but with the wine based chasseur sauce that came with the entrée made it taste amazing. I would have to say this was a total surprise and probably one of the best meals I had the entire vacation. DW’s Stuff chicken breast was very tasty as well. The breading was nice and crispy not soggy, the chicken was nice and tender and the vegetables weren’t mushy.

One of the families sitting next to us had a child with food allergies so the head Chef actually came out and personally talked with the family to tell them all the different food options he could custom make for them that would be allergy free. He had so many different options which made the family so happy and gracious. I’ve always heard of that happening where a chef would come out and do that but watching that in person was definitely nothing but magical.

The Cinderella’s Royal Table dinner came to $150.14 that included gratuity and a free picture w/ Cinderella. While certainly not chump change for dinner, considering the 1 on 1 photo opportunity with Cinderella inside an air conditioned castle with very little waiting, amazing food, and a very unique dining experience, eating at Cinderella’s Royal Table will continue to be a recurring tradition for us.

After dinner we decided to find more photo opportunities around the Castle and more rides until dark.
IMG_3697.jpg

IMG_3633.jpg

It started getting dark around 8pm, weather was still very nice and warm at 82 degrees as we scoped out the perfect spot for the night time festivities.

The Electrical Parade & The Magic, The Memories and You! was amazing.
As much as we wanted to stay for Wishes fireworks, given the problems the POR buses were having lately and how long of a day we’ve had, we really did not want to get stuck waiting for who-knows-how-long especially when EVERYBODY is trying to leave MK at the same time after Wishes. As much as we were disappointed, we had another full day tomorrow.

So, we left promptly as Wishes started and took night time pictures along the way.
Fortunately for us, we only had to wait 15 minutes until our bus arrived.

I absolutely love Disney at night time.

Amazingly, Madelyn did really really well today. She did not complain about being tired, having sore feet and she walked the entire 8.78 miles all on her own. She was a total trooper and I could not have been more proud of her today.

Next up: Day 3: Time to visit MGM.. err Hollywood.. Arrgh! & a dinner at Grammas!

I am joining in on this one. Your daughter is absolutely adorable. The surprise was such a great idea. And I wonder if I can trick my parents (or fiance) into the 2s rule. Your pictures are great, what kind of camera are you using? And I can't wait to read more...have to get ready for my trip in 37 days!!! :sohappy:

Your daughter is adorable!
I'm hopefully staying at PORS for my next trip, so I'm really enjoying all the pictures of the resort :)
The buses problem sucks, that's one thing that worries me about staying onsite for the first time, that the buses will be late and will just cause problems for our plans.
Also, Ariel looked FREAKY in that picture, she looks demented :|
Anyway, looking forward to more! :)

37days? That day is going to be here in a blink of an eye! I’m so excited for you.
I use a Canon Rebel XSi which is about a 4yr old DSLR and the lens is a Canon 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 which I’ve had since I bought my first DSLR over 6yrs ago. Personally, I think the lens is a great all around use lens that is not too big, decent speed, and a good price (selling for about $350 now).

Your daughter is adorable!

Regarding Ariel, I thought maybe it was a bad picture but I went back and looked at the other pics I took of Ariel at dinner and she has the same look in all the pics. :)
The bus problem did get resolved thankfully (you’ll have to wait for my next report) and was back to the usual 10-15min wait on the average.

Great report so far! I especially love the pic of your daughter in the front seat on Space Mountain. That is my all time favorite ride and I have been trying to be my DD6 on it too... She will ride Thunder Mountian but she said she is still scared to ride Space. How did Madelyn do? Did she like the drops? I would think that my daughter wouldn't like those at all, but hopefully Ill be able to get her on it soon....

Great stuff, keep it up!

We tried to get her excited about roller coasters in general and told her that this is going to be a very fast roller coaster in the dark. She seemed super excited about it and riding in the front was even her idea! About 30seconds into the ride, the ride starts getting pretty intense and I can’t see or hear her or reach over and try to hold her hand and I’m yelling as loud as I can trying to give her encouragement and I’m starting to wonder if we just ruined roller coaster rides for Madelyn... It was probably one of the longest 3 minutes of my life. When the ride finally slows down, I’m hearing her screaming from excitement. She said she got a little scared at some parts but she said in her words, “awesome!”. From then on, we knew we could do any ride at WDW including Tower or Terror.

This has got to be THE CUTEST picture ever! Your daughter is adorable! I'm loving your TR so far and can't wait to read more! You guys look like you're having a blast! My mouth is watering over that Dole Whip (I keep telling myself only 22 more days....) Haha! :p
It’s totally not fair that you can only get the Dole Whip at only at 2 places at WDW. A cruel joke by Disney if you ask me…

We were concerned the Royal rooms weren’t going to be ready in time considering the opening of the Royal rooms got delayed twice. Thankfully it opened just in time, 2 ½ weeks before we arrived.

Thank you! She had an amazing time and she’s definitely bitten by the WDW bug. It’s a clear choice what she would choose if she had to choose WDW or Disneyland.

Day 3 (Friday): Time to visit MGM.. err Hollywood.. Arrgh! & a dinner at Grammas!
Logged 8.22 miles on the Pedometer (19,313 steps) for the day.

Today started with a wakeup call at 7:30am with the following special letter to Madelyn from Mickey and Minnie.
5-1.jpg

Feeling a little groggy this morning with the timezone change and the lack of sleep on the red-eye flight catching up, I was thankful that Hollywood Studios opening was at 9am today. We got out of our room a little bit later than we intended to but it was OK if we didn’t make rope drop as we had another full day today. Temperature showed a nice 64 degrees and I took some pictures of the surrey bikes and the property map on the way to the Riverside Mill Food Court.
IMG_4041.jpg

IMG_4042.jpg

I ordered the Mickey Waffles with fresh fruit (strawberries) and my usual OJ and enjoyed the quiet atmosphere at the Riverside Mill with it still being pretty empty at 8am in the morning. The breakfast continued to be nice and fresh and tasteful and we made our way to the bus stop wondering how the bus situation will be like today.
IMG_4048.jpg

We made it out to the bus station around 8:45am and our hearts sank as we just saw the Hollywood Studios bus driving away. As we arrived at our stop and to our surprise, there was not 1 but 2 bus attendants busily working on their laptops and walkie talkies coordinating the bus pickup.
They had the full DME sized busses in circulation to Magic Kingdom and within 5 minutes, another Hollywood Studios bus came to pick us up. I know there were a number of families last night that have missed or were at risk of missing their reservations so my guess is that the bus situation at POR must have been escalated.
