I am a bit surprised that Cinderellas Castle did not make the list. I mean seriously it had too. Maybe because its just Flickr but I have to believe it should be on the list.

Mining data from 35 million Flickr photos, scientists at Cornell University made some surprising discoveries: Not only did the world's most photographed cities (and the most captured landmark in each) emerge, but also so did the most common angles for shooting each place. So what do the results say about us as travelers? The findings suggest that through our cameras, we "vote" for our favorite places, things, and the best representation of them—and, by and large, we agree. We reached out to the researchers to see if the results had changed since the study was released in April 2009, and they crunched the numbers for us again—with a few exceptions (the Lincoln Memorial, for example, has replaced the Washington Monument as most photographed place in D.C.) not much had changed.

But how can you photograph world wonders in a way that makes something special out of the overly familiar? In our slide show, we showcase the most commonly shot landmarks from the top 25 cities—first showing you its classic angle and then offering fresh alternatives, with tips from our photo editors on how to put your own unique spin on these iconic destinations. Consider this your photographer's guide to the Flickr Wonders of the World.

Something tells me that people take more pictures of Cinderella Castle than the Capitol rotunda in Austin, TX (23rd most photographed city), nothing against Austin, TX or their rotunda.

Maybe they limited the search to public spaces?

I was about to cry fowl on their approach until I read the article more closely. It says:
"Not only did the world's most photographed cities (and the most captured landmark in each) emerge"

Basically, they determined what the most photographed cities were and then determined what the most photographed location was in each city. That's very different from the title of "10 Most Photographed Places on Earth".

WDW is not on the list because it's not a major city.

Furthermore, I think for one to buy the basic premise you have to make the logical leap that flickr users represent that average picture taker. Instead, I think that flickr users are more likely to represent the tech savvy picture taker - which probably accounts for why tech hotspots like San Francisco and Seattle are fairly high on the list.

That said - very interesting list. It's neat to see what shows up from that analysis!

I wouldn't really call what Disney has going on as real cities. There are no real residents. I doubt that anyone tags their photos with Bay Lake or Lake Buena Vista.

I always thought New York city would be the most photographed. I do believe the Castle is probaby photographed more then any individual landmark in New York City.
