10 days to WDW

It's a mixture of excitement and nerves all at the same time. But 10 days from now I'll be, for the first time, at Disney World.

Never thought I'd go to the place till later in life, as Disneyland is so much closer and we go there annually, but Stitch is the main reason that WDW is finally happening for us.

The Stitch attraction is only the half of it, the other half is the fact that Stitch created fans, and those fans eventually came together, and a few formed very powerful friendships that may last an entire lifetime. That's my case, and I met one of them last year, and will meet again.

Stitch won't be open when we go, July 29, but at least I'll get to meet some old friends, and some new ones too, and embark on a journey I never expected I'd be taking.

It's been stressful to be sure, the planning since October of last year, the planning of a large group meet, only to have almost everyone eventually bail out when real-life finances and time constraints intervened to prevent them from coming. Still others, choosing to wait until later to be assured of riding Stitch.

but locked in and travelling the latest that those that remain could, we're gonna miss the opening. But we still will have fun, be happy, and at least, finally, I'll get to SEE the attraction, if only the outside of it, and the Disney World Park. And I get a feeling that I just might come away from this trip more impressed with WDW than I've ever been with DL, especially with MK's Tomorrowland being decidedly more "alive" than DL's.

Both a blessing and a curse, however, immediately prior to this (hopefully) great vacation, I have to be in Oregon for a few days. So, I leave home in 4 days, and following that trip will proceed immediately to florida, I won't even be home again for another month.

so, 4 days to get my affairs in order and I'm pretty well along. But I need your advice, if you'll be willing to give it. I have been studying the park, but this is my first visit, and I'm sure I'm in for some surprises.

So if you can offer some advice.......

About sunshine and rain: Do I REALLY need sunglasses for Florida? I don't like them. Pretty uncomfortable wearing them. But if it is absolutely necessary I may have no choice.

Rain: About how often does it rain and, when it does, how heavy is it?

Shade: Could you, perhaps, tell me which parks have the most outdoor shade, and which the least?

About eating on a budget:

My meal budget is limited to exactly $36 a day. Or an average of $12 a meal if I eat 3 meals a day. I am worried that I under-budgeted but it is now too late to allocate more funds. And, the fact that, I usually need a decent sized meal to be satsified, then taking in tax, I'm worried that I'm going to come up short on food money.

So, what's your best advice on where to get the most food for your dollar? In all parks? I am on a diet: Atkins, so I can't do heavy helpings of bread and junk food, but I need real food. Any tips and advice when it comes to eating on a budget?

Best attractions, attractions to avoid:

Any tips on attractions that were, in your opinion, not worth the wait in line? I will say that I'm not a thrill ride person, no Rock n' Rollercoaster or Splash Mountain for me, but I'm not a "Dumbo the flying elephant" person either. What would you say is worth the wait, but not too intense? Just highlights please, I dont expect you to list every attraction in every park (I've done that myself! ;)) But, if time becomes shorts, I'd like some tips on what to skip, and what to go out of my way to see.

Resort Restaurants:

We're planning on eating dinner at a few of the Deluxe hotel restaurants (we are Disney hotel guests at Riverside).

For sure, we know we're doing all the restaurants at the Polynesian....'Ohana, Kona Cafe, and, yes, the Luau too.

But aside from that what would you recommend? something not too expensive, and with meal names that we can actually pronounce? We're pretty sure we won't be eating at 1900 Park Fare (price), Citrico's (doesn't look appetizing), and Flying Fish Cafe (ever seen their entrees? Rule of thumb: Don't eat what you can't pronounce!).

Other than that any thoughts?

Best places to run into Stitch:

You knew I was going to ask this. ;) Where's he usually seen? Lilo not required.

Hoop dee doo Musical:

Is this worth the money? This one got a resounding "shrug" from the family, so just checking before we skip something we might have otherwise really enjoyed.

Best places to waste time:

Say chatting, relaxing, catching a break, etc, any "special spots" you'd suggest for friends to sit down and take a breather and shoot the breeze? Chairs preferred.

Extra Magic Hour:

Is it a good idea to escape from a park with EMH once the general public is allowed in? I've heard it gets pretty crowded once the park opens to non-disney guests on those days.

For the real Disney Enthusiast:

Where would you recommend visiting to get a taste of future developments and things to come at Disney World? Such as, rehabs where you can actually see the progress. ALSO, which specific things are down right now? Attractions, sideshows, etc...

And ANY other tips you care to add. I mean anything. If you want to share it, please do so as everything helps. I want this to be a great trip and you can never get too much advice, so, if you can share I appreciate it.

Nervous, but growing steadily more excited. I just hope everything goes well.

The attractions that are must see attraction are Peter Pans flight, Haunted mansion, Snow white adventure, carousel of progress,, I know you don't like thrill ride but Thunder Mt. is not scary like Space mountain or TOT, You should go on that too, Buzzlighter year and POTC, Those are the must see attractions that are calmer in my opinion, But Thriller rides are so fun, If I were you I would try Space Mt. and Splash!BTW if you hate drops Space and Splash both have those, But Thunder mt. Barely does.
Btw POTC is not usually crowded it you hit the ride right before the parade at night at about 8:30, we got to the ride and there was no one in line! NO ONE! I thought that the ride was closed or something, that is a helpful tip hit the ride at that time. Also Peter Pans flight is very crowded most of the time so I don't think that it is worth your time that much but it is a wonderful ride that is enjoyable. Snow White's ride is usually short wait about 15 minutes so you should take the time to see that. I would not say Winnie the pooh is a must see unless your a big fan, it is rather boring and you are thinking to your self while on the ride why can't I be at Space Mountain right now?LOL,
The Haunted Mansion is a MUST SEE, the line usually is not long about 20 minutes until you go into the pre-show and I asume you know that after the pre-show in Haunted mansion there is now gallery of pictures like at Disney Land just to let you know. Carousel of progress is a great way to beat the heat and get some refreshing air condition, it is also Walt's favorite ride so pay it is visit it is classic.

The weather at WDW is usually very humid at this time of year, and usually there is a 15 minute down pour every day late after noon or so it was like that when I was there.

Ohana's is very family oriented and I would say for you to eat there later at night since it is very beautiful to watch the Magic Kingdom fireworks from the restaurant!

Happy to help you with some stuff,
Angie

Wow, lot of questions! I'm sure others will be around to answer, so I'm going to stick to just a couple of things.

First, weather. It's summer in FL so there will be rain, probably every day. It seems to rain / storm every afternoon, but it's usually short lived and when everyone runs for the exit, stay and enjoy the park. I swear it seems brighter in FL for some reason, so sunglasses are a must for me. I think it will help make you think it's cooler if you're not squinting in the sun. Probably not, but hey, it's worth a try to "feel" cooler.

Second, food budget. I have a feeling you may be a little short on the food funds. But, you can make it work. We do a couple of things to help on food budget and the hot weather lends itself to these suggestions since it's rough to eat a meal and then be running around in 90+ heat. We try to eat only twice a day. Get a good breakfast in the morning and then snack around lunchtime. Get a good meal around mid-afternoon and then snack in the evening. The mid-afternoon is a great time to eat. If you time it right, you'll get lunch prices and you'll miss the rush for lunch or dinner. Stop by a grocery store and get some jerky, crackers, pork rinds (on atkins, I'm sure you're familiar!) etc for the noon and evening snacks. This way, you can have about $18/meal instead of $12.

So if you can offer some advice.......

About sunshine and rain: Do I REALLY need sunglasses for Florida? I don't like them. Pretty uncomfortable wearing them. But if it is absolutely necessary I may have no choice.

-I don't like sunglasses that much either. I have never worn them at WDW. I also wear a hat, so I can't really respond. It's not too bright though, and it has plenty of places to get out of the sun.

Rain: About how often does it rain and, when it does, how heavy is it?

-That part of Florida is known for short afternoon showers. I've never seen them last longer than 2-3 hours. Get a poncho, and try to tough out the rain.

Shade: Could you, perhaps, tell me which parks have the most outdoor shade, and which the least?

-The pavilions at Epcot can help a lot. MGM is less so, with plenty of sunny areas.

-I'm one to eat a lot too. I think the portions of food at WDW are good. I can get hot dog or hamburger, fries, and a drink for under $9. For fast and cheap food try:
MK: Pecos Bill's
Epcot: Electric Umbrella or the American Pavilion.
MGM: ABC Comissary
AK: Pizzafari

Best attractions, attractions to avoid:

Any tips on attractions that were, in your opinion, not worth the wait in line? -I don't like thrill rides either, but I found the ones at WDW are great. You have to try Splash. It's not bad at all. Just stay away from Space Mountain, Test Track, Mission Space, Tower of Terror, and RnRC. Dinosaur is a fun ride. It's not too rough but it is very loud.

Rule of thumb: Don't eat what you can't pronounce!).

Other than that any thoughts?

-Try Whispering Canyon at Wilderness Lodge, Chef Mickey's at Contemporary for breakfast, and the Boardwalk has a couple of good restaurants. Don't forget to go to Downtown Disney and eat at Rainforest Cafe among others.

Best places to run into Stitch:

You knew I was going to ask this. ;) Where's he usually seen? Lilo not required.

-Best place to find him is at MGM by the Sorcerer's Hat. I see him multiple times everytime I go.

Hoop dee doo Musical:

Is this worth the money? This one got a resounding "shrug" from the family, so just checking before we skip something we might have otherwise really enjoyed.

-Yes! It is a very good show. IMO, worth the money. If you like the old west or cowboys or anything, check it out.

Best places to waste time:

Say chatting, relaxing, catching a break, etc, any "special spots" you'd suggest for friends to sit down and take a breather and shoot the breeze? Chairs preferred.

-There's a great place to sit down b/w CoP and Space Mountain. There are benches and its shaded by some trees.

-There is a walkway that will take you right up to Expedition:Everest at AK. Check it out.

And ANY other tips you care to add. I mean anything. If you want to share it, please do so as everything helps. I want this to be a great trip and you can never get too much advice, so, if you can share I appreciate it.

-Use FastPass. A lot. You will need it to beat the crowds.

Nervous, but growing steadily more excited. I just hope everything goes well.

I messed this post up. Look in the quote. My responses have a dash (-) next to them.

About the weather - I live in Brunswick, GA, just 200 miles from WDW, so relatively similar weather. The weather, especially since the end of May, has been a lot wetter than in past years with many more severe thunderstorms. I just read in the Florida Times-Union (Jacksonville, FL's paper - Jacksonville is about 70 miles closer to Orlando than me) that the rainfall counted at Jax Int'l Airport for the month of June was 17+" (almost 3 times normal and the second highest monthly amount recorded since late 1800's) and already almost 7.5" in July. But like most people mention, most of the rain is in the late afternoons. But Orlando is still 130 miles from there, so the weather may be a little bit better.

As far as sunglasses, I've never seen the need for them.

And don't worry, I sympathize about the weather concerns - I'll be there right before you - July 26-28.

Just a quick note:

I LOVE Big Thunder Mountain Railroad!

It's just the most intense thrill rides I don't like. But Big Thunder is fun and I can handle something like that fine.

But Tower of Terror...no, Rock 'n Rollercoaster...probably not. Splash Mountain...no. I've never even been on Space Mountain and timid about trying.

But Big Thunder, no problem. Been on the Matterhorn in DL too and loved it.

I'm a Disneyland veteran, I go there annually, so if there's rides like Peter Pan's Flight or POTC I'm familiar with them, I just haven't ridden their WDW counterparts that are, probably, a bit different. (I know POTC is, because of the water table I hear there arent as many drops, and the theming is different.)

Restaraunts - I'd definately go to Whispering Canyon Cafe like Magical Monorail mentioned because the food rocks and the atmosphere is one of a kind, and from what I recall, the pricing isn't too bad. 'Ohanas is very good as well. What was fun that we did, is we requested a seat by the window very late so we watched Wishes while we ate our dinner :D.

Stitch - I'm pretty sure that, in MGM right inside the Disney Animation queue, if you follow his footprints in the ground, you end up at a place where you can get a picture with him all day.

Also, if you go by the SGE construction walls late at night, or basically any time where it's less crowded and more quiet, you can actually "hear" Stitch saying a few things. It's pretty cute, actually :D

And, you really should do Splash Mountain, I find BTM much more intense than Splash and Splash being even a MUCH better ride. ;) Space Mountain is also lots of fun, but I can see someone not liking it for being dark and all... you also MUST see Mickey's PhilharMagic!!! It's the best 3-D show in WDW, and personally, my favorite WDW attraction.

Overall, you're going to have a great time no matter what you do

So if you can offer some advice.......

About sunshine and rain: Do I REALLY need sunglasses for Florida? I don't like them. Pretty uncomfortable wearing them. But if it is absolutely necessary I may have no choice.
YES YES YES - Sunglasses are MUST - no matter how uncomfortable, you'll be thankful you brought them!!!

Rain: About how often does it rain and, when it does, how heavy is it?
Every afternoon for about 1/2 hour and once a week all day. It is torrential - keep in mind, FL is in the tropics!

Shade: Could you, perhaps, tell me which parks have the most outdoor shade, and which the least?
AK has the most shade but is also the most humid because of all the plants - All the others are baout the same

You can do this by eating at a value resort food court each and every meal or at a quick service counter. However, sit-downs will be tough unless you're willing to skip a meal on that day

So, what's your best advice on where to get the most food for your dollar? In all parks? I am on a diet: Atkins, so I can't do heavy helpings of bread and junk food, but I need real food. Any tips and advice when it comes to eating on a budget? If you can skip lunch, buffet breakfast and buffet dinner. O'hana and other meat friendly places will be good for dinner. Buffets good with eggs and meats for breakfast.

Just highlights please, I dont expect you to list every attraction in every park (I've done that myself! ;)) But, if time becomes shorts, I'd like some tips on what to skip, and what to go out of my way to see.
Go on every ride you can. There are some lame ones and some great ones but the theming is awesome on every one!

Rule of thumb: Don't eat what you can't pronounce!).

Other than that any thoughts?
Don't buy into the rule of not eating what you can't promounce. Some of the best food to be had is in Boma in the AKL. Luau is very expensive (almost 2 days budget of $36). Whispering Canyon is good too!

Best places to run into Stitch:

You knew I was going to ask this. ;) Where's he usually seen? Lilo not required.
MGM

Hoop dee doo Musical:

Is this worth the money? This one got a resounding "shrug" from the family, so just checking before we skip something we might have otherwise really enjoyed.
If you like music shows during dinner and don't think clapping and interacting with the staff is too corny, then do it.

Best places to waste time:

Say chatting, relaxing, catching a break, etc, any "special spots" you'd suggest for friends to sit down and take a breather and shoot the breeze? Chairs preferred.
Inside the parks, best place is the rocking chairs on the porch of Liberty square or on the terrace of the train station.

Outside the parks, Polynesian beach at night on a hammock. Nothing better than that!!

Extra Magic Hour:

Is it a good idea to escape from a park with EMH once the general public is allowed in? I've heard it gets pretty crowded once the park opens to non-disney guests on those days.
Very crowded days on EMH days. Take advantage of E-ride night instead

For the real Disney Enthusiast:

Where would you recommend visiting to get a taste of future developments and things to come at Disney World? Such as, rehabs where you can actually see the progress. ALSO, which specific things are down right now? Attractions, sideshows, etc...
Take one of the tours to see behind the scenes. The Behind the Steam Trains is cheapest @ ~$40 and the all day Behind the Magic is most expensive @ ~$200

And ANY other tips you care to add. I mean anything. If you want to share it, please do so as everything helps. I want this to be a great trip and you can never get too much advice, so, if you can share I appreciate it.
SUNSCREEN!! No matter how much you think you'll tan, you need sunscreen!!
Water, drink plenty of it - get free ice water by asking for iced tap water at the counter and sit-down restaurants
Try to get to a supermarket to buy some food in the morning. Buying nuts and Adkins friendly foods will save your budget on meals and will provide a tide-you-over snack in the afternoon.
If you want to skip dinner, do late lunch instead. It's cheaper and the food is generally the same

Nervous, but growing steadily more excited. I just hope everything goes well.
Don't be nervous, have a great time and remember that you will be in the happiest place on earth!

Just to let you know Space Mt. is not scary at all, to be honest with you Thunder Mt. Does in fact go faster than Space mt. If you can handle Thunder Mt. which goes faster you can handle space Mt.

I was inches away from trying Space Mountain at DL but chickened out at the last possible moment.

How intense are the drops on Space Mountain? It's the drops that usually get me, not the speed. I can handle speed. But a big big drop....nope. And I've never done a roller coaster with loops before, looks too scary actually.

I have to be cautious because i can and occasionally do get motion sick.

Oh yeah, BTW - Make yourself go on ToT, RnRC, Space and Splash.
ToT is nothing, you drop and all of a sudden you feel brakes, you go up, brakes.
RnRC is the smoothest roller coaster I have been on. If you close your eyes the whole time you wouldn't even know you went upside down. The darness helps your perception.
Splash is just plain fun. If you don't like drops, buck it up and do it. It lasts only 3 seconds. The end is one of the best AA scenes I have ever seen!
Space is tamer than BTMRR. Because it is in the dark, it seems worse than it it. Nonetheless, do these rides so at least you can say that you did them. Worse case is that you don't go on them again, best case, you'll love them and want to do them over and over!!

Space Mountain only has one big drop... You know the part in Thunder moutain when you are in the lava sorta cave thing and you are going up and you here that sound clicking as you get higher and higher? Well in Space Mountain they have that to as you get higher you hear that clicking sound (I hope u guys know what i am talking about LOL) and you drop after that the rest is just turns and little drops it is AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU HAVE GOT TO GO ON THIS RIDE! YOU WILL REGRET FOREVER (from the movie sandlot-->) FOREVER, FOREVER, FOREVER! LOL

Not bad at all, I heard the biggest was like, 20 some feet, I think, and they're not very steep. The biggest one is towards the end and it just drops and turns "fast", but that's about it. I would also say BTM has much larger drops, but they're curved so it seems a bit different. I also think you should try ToT, it's a great ride ;)

I totally agree with you here... You have got to go on these rides they are really nothing at the special effect on them are great, especially TOT and Splash! RnRc is a must see too I mean it does go fast! BUT, There are barely any drops really

Space Mtn - Not too fast (I think about 25 mph) just feels faster because it's dark. And no loops. A couple good drops, but should be manageable.
Splash Mtn - just the final Big drop to worry about, but again not bad and the chance to get a little wet.

Just have fun and to paraphrase Phlydude - at least give them ALL a try. You never know, you might love 'em all.

I don't consider RnRC to have any "drops". There are changes in altitudes, but only because it does invert. The initial launch is awesome! It is the smoothest coaster I've ever been on.

Fast! :)

You are sitting right outside the station and there is a countdown. You are lauched from zero to about 60mph without an incline. I don't remember the techincal term (EDIT: see post directly above!), but it's kinda like a slingshot. Great rush!
