Part of me thinks they'll somehow take the place of the spiders
This is probably correct. Trying to figure out what animal this is?

Looks like a baby animal in a wig? Maybe a big cat species?
I was thinking that initially but the hairdo looked similar to this character, same clothes color too:

But then you have the ears which don't match. Maybe Hoop earrings? It would make sense for them to be piloting a drone based on their size and if the "drones for spiders" concept holds true.

That hair is pretty distinctive, I think you’re right.

They were not. The vibe I got from the movie was in the way backs of early 2000s. The iPod era. Doesn't Judy Hopps use a Shuffle? So it's a considerable time jump if the show and presumably the sequel takes place in the current era.

They had full-on iPhone-like smartphones though, so late aughts at the absolute earliest. I assume it was meant to take place in our 'current day'. Even Judy's "Shuffle" is entirely a touchscreen, which I don't think even existed?

It was opened in 1998? “These days” we are in a 4K world and there are newer attractions with sharper images.

Plus, 2018 is like last year.

I think he was alluding to the fact that the poster was complaining about the picture quality of an attraction that she last saw seven years ago, which had received digital upgrades in the time that has passed. Hence putting "these days" in sarcastic quotes, because the poster hadn't experienced the attraction "these days."

Also, yes, 2018 was nearly a decade ago now. 👴👴👴
