Concept Art: Douglas Rogers & the Evolution of the Castles

Douglas Rogers is a very accomplished film artist (Shrek, Tangled). WDI brought him onboard to design its new castles in Shanghai & Hong Kong. Thankfully, for those of us who enjoy concept art and the design process, Rogers has his own website showing off a LOT of art for these projects...

    Tokyo Disneyland Resort Expansion

A couple images matching art with model: The above vista has brilliant layering of foreground, middleground and background (ice castle) when viewing from the hotel's main egress.

    Tokyo Disneyland Resort Expansion

Note how the hotel wing that runs alongside the frozen showbuilding is thinner than the other wings. Only courtyard-facing rooms in that wing?

    Tokyo Disneyland Resort Expansion

Here's an aerial to illustrate. It's definitely part of the hotel, but is going to cause some confusion, as in "what is that unthemed midrise modern building that is taller than the frozen summit?" Fingers crossed for a model of the complete hotel soon.

    Tokyo Disneyland Resort Expansion

^I'd been hoping we'd get to see a detailed model soon. Rockwork looks great. Numerous buildings in the model are unfinished with little detail, which, as a model-lover, is disappointing. The thing that I am most interested in seeing is the hotel and how it interfaces the park...

    Unearthed Discovery Bay Art

I want to see the hi-res colorized version of this Harper Goff birdseye - only a small/blurry version has been found online (though a big linework version is out there): Speaking of early versions of Star Wars Land... the "making of" book is supposed to come out at the end of this month...

News Tron coaster coming to the Magic Kingdom

The Tron box, both in Shanghai and in MK, is imagineering at its nadir. The problem isn't that it will be visible from all over the park and Lakes. The problem is it's a massive unthemed warehouse. All they needed to do was go the extra mile (i.e., be the Disney everyone here got hooked on)...

    Universal Beijing

^ I think Diagon Alley is a contender for best-looking theme park area ever built (though a large amount of credit goes to the film's art directors). Translating a live-action world to theme parks is straightforward. Disney & Universal have both done it well. Translating an animated or comic...

    Universal Beijing

Just my opinion: The pics getting posted on themeparx make most areas look... to be kind... like a far cry from "the most expensive theme park ever built." The park is coming out well below my modest expectations. Minion land looks cheap. Volcano looks like paper mache with coaster killing...

    Tokyo Disneyland Resort Expansion

Foliage. Though the bay hotels have been visible from certain angles and locations throughout TDS' history. Here is a closer view from before anything beside the bridge was up: source: https://twitter.com/shumishumi_dis

    Tokyo Disneyland Resort Expansion

At first I thought the background was a 'mountain' range. Then I realized it was the hotel. First pic I've seen showing how much in-park impact it will have. They have to get it right.

    Tokyo Disneyland Resort Expansion

This was the isolated Frozen port set to go between Lost River and Port Discovery. That plan was scrapped, and now something akin to this will open in a couple years as the Frozen district of Fantasy Springs.

    Tokyo Disneyland Resort Expansion

Unfortunately a blurry screengrab from the ImagiNations video, but this is the model of the cancelled Frozen port at Disneysea (note how small the Indy temple is next to it): It boggles my mind that so many of these incredible detailed models were created - for built and unbuilt projects...

Transformative Multi-Year Expansion Announced for WDS Paris

Agree that more CityWalk/Downtown Disney mall space doesn't elicit any interest/excitement for me. The last time I saw a concept from for a themed RDE Center that got my attention were these unused early concepts for Hyperion Wharf/Electric Waterfront by David Damron:

    Tokyo Disneyland Resort Expansion

The Space Mountain copy, "Alien Taxi" looks awesome in the art and is pretty far off from SM - looks like a perfect fit for Tokyo Disneyland's cancelled SciFi City. Their take on Grizzly River Run with lots of sight gags looks pretty cool: They started building and then the project was...

    Tokyo Disneyland Resort Expansion

This isn't really related to Tokyo, but if you like WDI concept design, check out this art-filled thread on the stalled Fushun Dreamworld park: https://www.themeparx.com/hotgo-dreamworld/. The Chinese developer visited Disney's US parks and insisted that they be copied and improved upon...

HKDL gets new castle, frozen land and marvel land.

I've never found a satisfactory answer as to exactly when & why WDI/Disney stopped manufacturing customized Exit Signs (with a casing and, as importantly, Font created for each location). It was a trademark "Disney Difference" for decades. Easiest guess is cost-savings. A terrible shame, if...

News Swan and Dolphin Tower Expansion - The Walt Disney World Swan Reserve

^What you describe is Iger & Chapek's deeply unfortunate and irreversible legacy. It is the main reason why I feel on balance, despite some good additions, they were/are so dreadful for the domestic Parks & Resorts division over their tenure with Company. Attractions and entertainment come...
