Tomorrowland Slides from 1976-1978...Space Mountain was Brand New

I think it was from a book a few years ago. I read a young man was sweeping out each car and somehow someone triggered the ride. But it may also be entirely a myth. I'm sure one of the Disney historians around here know.

Now we need a kind soul to post a photo of the Space Mountain Chocolate Chip Cookie.

Tomorrowland Slides from 1976-1978...Space Mountain was Brand New

Same here Bethymouse! I always spend part of each trip boring my kids on what certain areas of the park used to look like!

Tomorrowland Slides from 1976-1978...Space Mountain was Brand New

I always assumed that the reason they closed the skyway was because of safety concerns. I seem to recall a story where a WDW cast member fell while cleaning??

Tomorrowland Slides from 1976-1978...Space Mountain was Brand New

I have the same feeling for Disneyland in the 50's and 60's! Wish I was around when Walt was walking the parks.

Tomorrowland Slides from 1976-1978...Space Mountain was Brand New

The retro slides are not mine. My Mom bought them back in the 1970's on our yearly trips to WDW. We recently found them and I clean them up in Photoshop.

Tomorrowland Slides from 1976-1978...Space Mountain was Brand New

I agree and even on a deeper level I feel like Tomorrowland has lost its way from the idea of "progress" and future. Yet I understand the impossibility to portray a vision for the future in our fast paced world that wouldn't grow stale within months.

Tomorrowland Slides from 1976-1978...Space Mountain was Brand New

It's good to know there were other kids feeling my pain in being too short for the Magic Kingdom's coolest new ride! I'm glad you made it back in 2005. Probably felt like two different "worlds".

Would you say that more for the theming and atmosphere or more specifically for the rides?

Tomorrowland Slides from 1976-1978...Space Mountain was Brand New

I was born in 72 and I was not nearly tall enough when we went in 1976. I had to watch my older brothers ride it and talk endlessly about how supercool it was... I went back home and started marking my height on the interior closet door until I finally hit the growth spurt.

Tomorrowland Slides from 1976-1978...Space Mountain was Brand New

Thanks ABQ! Much appreciated. I think I have a slight obsession with WDW from the 1970's and 1980's. I'm guessing that when I'm old my kids will be posting nostalgic photos of WDW from the 2010's.

Tiki Bird or Orange Bird? Adventureland circa 1976.

Who remembers this? The Little Orange Bird Sing A Long/Read A Long.

Tiki Bird or Orange Bird? Adventureland circa 1976.

I find myself torn between the WDW of the 70's-80's and the WDW of today. There was a lot of charm in the earlier version of the Magic Kingdom that has slipped away a little bit. There were areas off the beaten path to discover that seem to be gone today.

    totally odd family traditions

Where to start....Our "Traditions" MK pre-opening...Tonga Toast at the Poly After the Good Morning show in the MK...always enter the park through the right tunnel. Look back at the Elias Disney Window when you get into the Castle area. Frontierland Shootin Gallery....Fourth gun from left. So...

Tiki Bird or Orange Bird? Adventureland circa 1976.

I've been waiting for that to happen! I'm guessing since the Orange Bird was the Florida Orange Juice mascot they are hesitant to bring him out?? But then they are selling t-shirts and other souvenir items with him.

What does Disney do with old Audio and Video?

I worked at a movie theatre when I was in high school in the late 1980's. A rerelease of Pinocchio came through our theatre and I remember the film broke and spilled onto the floor in the projector room. We had to clip large amounts of the film and eventually we had to request a fresh copy. I...
