May is a great time to go! We always went then when I was smaller. The flower and garden festival paired with hot but not roasting weather made our trips great. The crowds never seemed too horrible then, but I was little so I can't say my memories are all that accurate.

We've done Afternoon tea the last few times we've gone. It's great for a quiet afternoon away from the crowds at the park. The teas and pastries there are all really good too.
