I prefer the Maul battle in TPM for pure choreography, but it is a good battle. I'm more referring to his sudden acceptance of being Vader, the clunky dialogue on Mustafar, and the not that compelling reason or execution of his turn. All the ingredients were there to make it truly great. It...

I don't see criticism called out as entitlement. But people demanding things change? That's entitlement. Trying to raise money to remake the movie the way you want? That's entitlement. People are free to criticize, but when they act as if something was personally taken from them because...

Which fans though? From all of my (way to much) diving into fan reactions, hard core fans seem split on TLJ about 50/50. Love it or hate it. Very few in bewtween, So they obviously did service a certain segment of fandom. Just not the ones who didn't like it.

Yeah, they've seen all the movies at least twice. TFA and TLJ are the ones they repeatedly request to watch. My older son also loves ANH and ESB. The younger one TPM and RotJ (he's nine so ewoks and Gungans are in his wheelhouse) :) I know its controversial. I have this debate with my wife...

We can all disagree on the merits or lack thereof of TLJ. Because it IS divisive and I understand why some don't like it. That's why it makes for engaging discussion. But I'm really worried they are going down the complete opposite path with IX. I call it pulling a Revenge of the Sith...

Are you saying you don't believe their claims that it was always the intent since frame 1 to bring back palpatine?!?!?! ;)

This is, of course, all a matter of opinion. TO me, TLJ was the first movie to truly feel like Star Wars for me in quite a long time. Hence the divisiveness. But to your main point, are we rooting for Disney to make SW a success or are we rooting for great SW movies? I have no interest in...

I agree that they can coexist. And boy do they still throw the fans a bone. I mean we're getting Palpatine back for IX. I'm hoping they find a way to pull that off well, but I'm not overly optimistic. (No more clones please!) My big dispute in general is that there is a demand for a reuniting...

I actually thought she did a pretty good job in TLJ. But TFA was rough. It was hard to watch her. But can you imagine what kind of outcry from fans there would have been if they left her out. People are still screaming a year and a half later about perceived changes to Luke's character and a...

I personally think expectations of fan service is in danger of ruining this form of entertainment. Whether its TLJ, or game of thrones, the Snyder cut, or race/gender swapping characters, or whatever the latest outrage is. The sense of ownership among fans over the last 20 years or so has...

I agree completely with your first paragraph. And to me, there is nothing wrong with having differing opinions on the quality of the film. We are both entitled to that. As to the reaction. I think there is bit of defensiveness on both sides there. Some of the studio responses were too...

You are correct, as this isn't a marvel thread I won't go in to deep here. I put the Marvel franchise in a similar vein as the Bond Franchise (much bigger from a performance standpoint obviously). It's a large string of movies that has immense cultural relevence for the time of their peak...

Only time will tell on that. So there's not really any way to know. They are great fun, and everything the MCU has accomplished has been remarkable. And I think they will continue to have their fans. But when AFI releases their top 100 movies of the 21st century in 80 years or so, i just...

Just to add, I agree with everything Rian says there. A easily palatable movie can be good. But for the most part, great movies are divisive. It's hard to be great if you aren't challenging your audience in some way.

Because Marvel made the exact movie their fans wanted. I'm a fan of the MCU. have seen all of the movies in their initial release. But in the end, I don't think Endgame will be remembered the same way the original trilogy is. It will be notable for their extreme success as a franchise. But...

Honest question. When it comes to big budget blockbusters do you think the priority should be to serve audience expectations or the artist? What you say makes sense if the only goal of making a movie is to service fan expectations. If that were the sole driver, then they should have made...

Done they were. Lied they did.

Compelling but not conclusive. I'm still of the mind that the number of fans put off by TLJ isn't a number big enough to have that sort of impact at the box office. I just don't think there are that many super fans. And even among us, we're divided so its not a full on revolt. But I'm open...

Done they were. Lied they did.

By confirmation bias I'm intending to say that any argument that claims to know the cause conveniently leaves out contradictory evidence. Because it is impossible with the information we do have to come to any valid conclusion. Yes, the chronological story of TLJ to Solo to cancellation, to...

I’m not questioning evidence of a decline. I’m saying the evidence that it was caused by The Last Jedi is questionable.
