Wish (Walt Disney Animation - November 2023)

I do wonder what the actual development and production time was for this film because a common complaint casual viewers have is that the movie looked and felt rushed. Given that the project was only formally announced in September 2022, 14 months prior to release, that might have been the case...

Wish (Walt Disney Animation - November 2023)

That's an interesting theory. The official explanation is that the filmmakers felt "Starboy" would have come off as a rehash of Genie and/or Maui, but that's not a terribly convincing justification (for one thing, both those characters were largely defined by their voice actors' performances)...

Wish (Walt Disney Animation - November 2023)

This is less surprising when I found out that the Walmart steelbook was the only 4K Ultra HD physical release Disney did anywhere, and was region-free (so they were counting in the international orders). Everywhere else the best that can be had is the Blu-Ray.

Wish (Walt Disney Animation - November 2023)

The Asha meet-and-greet is still available at Epcot at least (and probably will last through the spring there since the Flower and Garden Festival display at the front of the park features Wish topiaries). I think we'll know by the end of the month whether the movie has received a second wind...

Wish (Walt Disney Animation - November 2023)

I'm thinking about all the little questions me, a lot of critics, and casual viewers raised like "Why is Asha shocked that not all wishes will eventually be granted?" "Why didn't Sabino just play music if that was his heart's desire?" "Why do most people desire things they could easily do under...

Wish (Walt Disney Animation - November 2023)

Yeah, I still don't see what there is about the movie that new viewers (who presumably aren't aware of how badly the film performed in theatrical release) are going to latch onto. I particularly wonder how well people are going to understand the storyline - i.e. how giving up the wishes works -...

Wish (Walt Disney Animation - November 2023)

That's actually deeper than I've seen Target going with. There are also some discounts at ShopDisney but they're not as deep as either. In fact some of the upscale merch such as the Dooney & Burke bags aren't discounted at all there.

Wish (Walt Disney Animation - November 2023)

I miss those days too, though I'd argue that even before the MCU the films were having a problem with being overly jokey - it really goes back to trying to chase the success of Aladdin - and was one of the things that derailed the so-called "renaissance" era of films. But it definitely got a lot...

Wish (Walt Disney Animation - November 2023)

I would actually argue that Wish was a bigger disaster than Strange World at least in in the face of what was expected of it. Disney gave up on Strange World well before its release with a half-hearted at best advertising push and no merchandising. Wish was undoubtedly the most-hyped Disney...

Wish (Walt Disney Animation - November 2023)

Bizarrely, the 4K release of Wish won't be coming to Region 2 (UK/Europe) as a physical disc. (This also happened with Strange World.)

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

Apparently a reason Dune Part Two isn't posting even bigger grosses straight out of the gate is because some people can't see it in premium formats right away, but are willing to wait. (This goes back to how the first film was day-and-date streaming, but apparently a chunk of people who first...

Wish (Walt Disney Animation - November 2023)

Beyond it being unusually successful for a live-action musical film (that isn't a Disney remake), even more so when the international grosses are factored in (it lapped Mary Poppins Returns and The Greatest Showman, its closest analogues), Wonka is basically what would have been the runner-up in...

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

KFP4 is the only (new) PG title in the marketplace, and there won't be another one until The Garfield Movie on Memorial Day weekend, so it's probably going to stick around the way Wonka and Migration managed to. Not to mention that it gets the Easter/spring break family outings all to itself in...

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

With all this chatter about the point of the Pixar rereleases, and the impressive take Kung Fu Panda 4 is already bringing in, I think a major question is being overlooked - why was Elio delayed? That was supposed to be Disney's big spring release (that and the snakebitten Snow White remake)...

Wish (Walt Disney Animation - November 2023)

I think one of the things that completely broke the film's potential was that they wanted to include so many contradictory concepts and tropes and couldn't make the hard choices. Queen Amaya remaining queen after her husband is deposed, despite her being complicit in his reign, is a great...

Wish (Walt Disney Animation - November 2023)

I don't know if there ever was such a treatment, but the idea of her being a princess, and specifically Magnifico and Amaya's daughter, has been picked up by fanfic writers creating alternate continuity stories. (Fan writers also like to play with the concepts that were mooted but dropped, like...

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

There's been some discussion of this in the Wish-specific thread: In the streaming, all content all the time age, it's harder for something to succeed at all if it's not a blockbuster or at least develops a fervent cult following straightaway. I'm sure that the three straight-to-streaming Pixar...

Wish (Walt Disney Animation - November 2023)

This. It's one of the saddest things about how the U.S. entertainment industry works these days - that the market is so flooded with content that something has to be a hit out of the gate or it's over. Even if it is a hit, will it stick with audiences the way pre-New Tens successes do? The...

Wish (Walt Disney Animation - November 2023)

If you know where to look you'll find really funky interpretations of Wish. Some see it as anti-Christian ("I'm a Star"'s messaging often gets brought up in those, and/or how Magnifico is a God-like figure whose judgments Asha questions and rebels against), one YouTuber saw it as nihilistic...

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

Oh, I've noticed this of late - it's fairly common practice in cities with "arthouse scenes" like NYC, but it's spread to the flyover states and megaplexes too. There were a ton of those over Christmas, but the big AMC in my area's been running movies like the 2004 Phantom of the Opera and the...
