And how many years of your life were spent in Florida? Because apparently all people who have lived in Florida know not to go near any water anywhere in the state.

I have the same presumption. However, many in this thread believe the parents should have expected a gator attack to happen.

I'm one of those hovering parents who never lets their kid more than an inch away from them. I am extremely overprotective and cautious. I have trouble sleeping most nights due to anxiety thinking of all the possible bad things that could happen to my children. I am also on track to graduate...

Swimming happens when your feet no longer touch the bottom.

May have already been covered in the thread...I fell about 20 pages behind at some point...but I am pretty sure those signs are there because the water is gross and unsanitary and they don't want people swallowing it. I don't think the signs have anything to do with alligators. I don't think...

It's a better outcome because they have a body. The thought of my precious baby chewed up in an alligator's stomach is what kept me up all night. I'm so glad to not have to think about that scenario anymore.

I am so grateful to hear the baby was in tact. As a parent, a drowning death is a much less horrific pill to swallow than the alternative. Still absolutely awful, but marginally less awful. They will at least get to say goodbye.

THANK YOU. I don't know why people assume wading means "swimming waist-deep". It means you are walking...in a place that your feet will get wet. So like when you go to the ocean for a look but you're wearing pants. You roll up your pants, take off your shoes, and walk along the edge so you...

I think you are just asking for trouble in the karma department. Verbally abusing grieving parents....just not a good thing to do. Don't ever go outside, lest you be struck by lightning. The universe may want to teach you a lesson in foreseeability.

I cannot believe I'm reading the words "bad parenting" here. So disgustingly sanctimonious of you. Reserve the term "bad parenting" for people who actually hurt and abuse their kids. Not the ones who lovingly take them on a vacation to Disney and spend quality time with them. There's a lot...

I took this photo when my now 13 and 15 year olds were 2 and 4. Never thought twice about letting them stand there.

Exactly. Who looks at a picture like that and thinks "what terrible parents letting your kid play in the sand next to the water at a beach resort". Anyone who blames the parents in this situation needs to be slapped.

Same. I was hoping it was anything else other than what it actually is.

I don't think closure is possible in this situation. They have a lifetime of suffering ahead.

Took the words right out of my mouth. I haven't let my kids actually touch the water but I've let them play next to the edge. Never once did I think about alligators. Well now it will be the only thing I think of... I was hoping I'd wake up this morning and find out it was just a bad dream I had.

I'm sure if it were your kid, you'd appreciate these sort of posts. No tact whatsoever.

I will obviously do my best to enjoy my time, but...I don't think I can ever ride the monorail and glance over at that section of water and not feel sick about it....pretty much ever again.

It actually says no eye witnesses "were available for comment". Because my hopes were up at first when I read that too.

Right? I'm SOOOO not the type to overreact about freak things in the news, but man, I am anxious right now. Even if there was zero risk of anything happening, just the lingering black cloud over the area is enough to make it no fun.

I'm so sick over this. What a horrible nightmare for the family. I'm trying so hard not to think about the gruesome details or I'll never be able to sleep again. My daughter is 22 months old and all I can think of is what if this was her. We live in Florida and I take her on walks to the...
