No one thing is going break the parks, but break enough of these rules it will eventually have an impact.

If you don't believer there are rules to theme park design then you clearly know nothing about how Imagineering and how Disney parks go to where they are at today.

Like so many of the things that made the parks great, it is hard to measure.

I doubt the placement of a ride impacts it's popularity, but bad placement can erode the thematic coherence of the parks which has a less tangible, but still real, impact on the guests.

It wouldn't be hard to design Monsters land so that, like Toy Story, you could pass through it to get to another land. Even if they do end up land locking that area, the real expansion potential on that side of the park is the Indy area and then out into the parking lot.
