Trip Report Shrouded In A Daft Disguise *COMPLETED*

Two weeks ago today, I returned home from the most surreal Disney vacation I have ever experienced.

During my last visit in February, I couldn’t have imagined having to wear a face mask and have my temperature taken before being allowed into a park. “Social distancing” wasn’t part of my vocabulary. Hand sanitizer was something I carried in a little bottle in my purse, not something in giant containers at the entrance/exit of every attraction.

No park hopping? No Fastpasses? No FIREWORKS :jawdrop: ?!! Not even on my radar screen.

Like a bolt out of the blue, the pandemic struck and life was dramatically altered. For everyone. And there is no Magic Mirror to tell us when it will be over. For me the pandemic has been a reminder to take nothing for granted ~ and that there can still be joy in the darkest days.

My name is Tuvalu and I have been a WDW annual passholder for nearly 25 years. I was raised on Disney and so were my children. The parks have always been my “escape” from real life. Could they still be an “escape” in the midst of a pandemic? After months of quarantine, I was ready to find out.

My daughter Em was my travel buddy. My husband Woody had reservations, but not for our safety. He was concerned we’d struggle with the restrictions and disappointment with all the changes. He wanted us to come back happy and wasn’t sure we would. Truthfully, I wasn’t sure we would either. After much research and due diligence, Em and I felt prepared to embark on a vacation with few expectations.

Full disclosure ~ I‘ve wrestled with writing a report of our trip. The pandemic and subsequent events have caused much division on this Disney fan forum. I’ve always considered the trip reports section to be a “safe space” and hope it stays that way. My goal is to provide entertainment to the reader, nothing more.

With that in mind.....

Had we been seated on time we may have crossed paths. Sadly, we waited a long time 👎
That was such a bummer!

great pics of you and Em at the table!
You both look so happy in your pictures that were taken at CG! :)
Thanks!

That is my favorite! I get a cup each time I pass the booth at Flower & Garden that has it because I can never find it anywhere else!
Total Wine. 😉

Saturday, July 25

We lucked out for the second day in a row ~ no rain! Although it was hotter and more humid than the day before. We had another park reservation for MK (it was our last day ;) ) and our plan was to be there for rope drop.

Em took a few lobby photos. Work was definitely being done to 5th and 6th floor rooms on the other side of the Lodge (note the black tarps.)

Em and I were inside the park at 8:55 am being welcomed with excited waves by Disney friends atop the train station.

I’m happiest to see this sight first thing in the morning, as I anticipate all the fun to come.

I’m also very happy not to have a Starbucks addiction.

Em and I opted for separate vehicles due to my *little* competition problem.

There wasn’t a photo of my Galactic Hero victory.

Probably because I wasn’t one.

The saddest sight of our vacation.

Of course I’m glad this wonderful attraction is getting some much needed love, but I wish the refurbishment could have been completed during the shutdown. The closure not only affected this vacation but the next one (and one to come...)

Where to, Em?

Even more shocking than riding the Speedway during rope drop hour.....

Nope, not Dumbo. The next time I’ll tolerate motion sickness on Dumbo will only be with the Tuva-tinys!

We did this instead.

Wait - you don’t feel well on Dumbo - but you’re good with barnstormer?

Clearly I have a different strain of MSD. (Motion Sickness Dammit.)

Only 45 minutes since rope drop and we’d already done Buzz, Space, Speedway and Barnstormer!

Hopefully the Tuva-tinys will get to enjoy Dumbo sooner than later. My DD LOVED it.

Going round in circles is no bueno. Coasters without loops are fine.
But there are also other triggers for my MSD. :joyfull:

Lol on the "Hi's" - I'll fill in Toni. Just be careful, it can be addictive.
I’m learning that!

Saturday, con’t

29776067-E111-40AD-AB13-3A543456FEC0.jpeg

Em and I approached the entrance to Peter Pan just in time to witness the following ~
Mom, Dad and a young girl stepped up to the FP tapstile.
Mom attempted to scan what appeared to be a hard admission ticket.
CM: “I’m sorry there’s no Fastpass now.”
Mom (grumbling): “Well that was a waste of money!!”

So. Many. Questions! 🤔 😆

The real irony is the family walked away in a huff instead of just joining the posted 10 minute standby line. Although maybe they knew something we didn’t, as we got stuck in the children’s bedroom while the pirate ships were sanitized.

Lunchtime.

Mobile order 👍.

Finding a table 👎.

6A4B9D8F-4776-42D8-8B6C-B25B29B57C38.jpeg

Em and I had gotten the hang of mobile ordering and I pushed “I’m here” as we exited the CBJ theater. Moments later I received our Pick Up number and we were allowed to enter the restaurant.

Retrieving our food was easy. Locating an open table was not.

We wandered around with our tray like lowly freshmen on the first day of school. It took us several sweeps around all the dining areas before we saw a family getting up to leave. We waited for a CM to wipe down the table before we claimed it.

The table was in the back room where we usually like to sit. Today the ambiance was spoiled by an unruly kid repetitively yelling the same word again and again in order to hear his voice echo. Both parents did NOTHING.

Since finding a different location wasn’t an option for us, we (and everyone else in the room) had to endure this annoyance. Not blaming the kid ~ blaming the selfish can’t-be-bothered parents.

The toppings bar was closed and we received a small container of lettuce and tomatoes with our food. No cheese. :arghh:

F78BB600-C7E1-4863-BE6A-04E0B96C02B0.jpeg

Em and I both bemoaned the loss of the toppings bar. Hopefully it will return post-pandemic.

Pecos Bills is one-way out and we happened upon the start of a character cavalcade.

282FA5EF-78CE-4270-93D9-FDF80E60F0EF.jpeg

Em wanted ice cream and according to the app our only options were Storybook Treats or Auntie Gravity’s. We did not want to follow the mini-parade so we did an about face and headed towards the hub....

....where we arrived at the same time as the cavalcade we were trying to avoid!

0ED0EC12-938C-46D7-AF1E-2FD8912FAB52.jpeg

It provided Em the opportunity to finalize her Storybook Treats vs. Auntie Gravity’s decision.

She chose Fantasyland over Tomorrowland and we opted to walk through the castle.

I knew I liked you for more than one reason. ;)

From the woman who doesn’t drink coffee? 🤔
Oh no, I actually do. I am not like E. I don't make mine at home. I hit Starbucks every morning(the late shift also) before I go to work. I actually get 2 drinks from there EVERY. DAY.(makes for quite the expense ;) ). One hot, one cold. The team members at work always say I'm "double fisting"!! A lot of times they're not sure which manager is on duty but they say as soon as they see my cups they know it's me!!

Before I share our ice cream saga, I want to comment on three things I saw in the park today that made me go.....

0F96D773-E5FB-4242-9FA0-BB8E4D4CDB6E.gif

All involved women.

First was a gal wearing one of those “bling” Cinderella Castle tank tops....backwards.

Second was a young adult with an “ample booty” who was attired in leggings which simulated a thong bikini. She was with HER PARENTS. At a FAMILY THEME PARK.

Lastly was the middle-aged woman who was soaping up both her arms....from wrists to shoulders....over a restroom sink.

To be honest, the ice cream saga included a non-mask-compliant hillbilly woman but reliving the incident is making my blood pressure spike so I am not going to “go there.”

Anyhoo, Em and I left the cool comfort of the gift shop for the sticky hot outdoor queue of Storybook Treats.

It would be the longest wait of the day. Nearly a half hour elapsed from the time we entered the line until I brought the ice cream to the table Em had scored in the interim.

Why the delay? Perhaps because Storybook Treats had only ONE cast member ~ working both the register and ice cream machine.

Eating is HARD at WDW.

The ice cream tasted divine.

We decided to return to our villa for an afternoon break. Look who we saw on Main Street.

Em chose to take a nap while I ventured out for a final swim in the Boulder Ridge pool. She made the better choice...the pool was crazy crowded! I didn’t stay long.
