DAK 'Encanto' and 'Indiana Jones'-themed experiences at Animal Kingdom

You do remember what was happening in the world during November 2021, right?

Encanto was a Covid baby though. Disney may be looking at merch sales and streaming minutes (although CoCo must be popular by those metrics as well as it’s been a serious contender for an attraction).

Spider-Man No Way Home was released a few weeks after Encanto and grossed almost $2 billion worldwide. Encanto made $256 million. Even Eternals (released a few weeks before Encanto) made $400 million.

I definitely think Encanto got a new life on streaming and its box office doesn’t reflect its current standing. But I don’t think its box office disappointment can be blamed on Covid

The release date doesn't impact the popularity of the movie or the profits.
'Coco' was released in 2017 and 'Encanto' in 2021. Box office profits showed how well each movie really did while each movie was aired in the theater. 'Coco' was significantly more popular in the global box office by grossing $807 million, while 'Encanto' only grossed a little over $256 million. For so many reasons it just doesn't make sense to theme an area with a movie that was significantly less successful and less admired animated film. 'COCO' would have been a much better choice.

It’s the soundtrack that was the massive success. We don’t talk about Bruno spent 5 weeks at #1. The musical nature of the movie is up there with Frozen. It won Grammys and went viral.

Encanto is a bad fit for Disney's Animal Kingdom, and spreading this message is more important than reposting images of dirt piles from Bioreconstruct, which everyone on here already likely follows anyway.

I actually think Encanto fits very well to Tropical Americas and does so in a respectful and fitting manner. It’s also a great idea for a ride. Instead of a haunted mansion it’s a magical house.

I’m not sure what makes it so terrible? Just because it’s based on an “IP?”

That’s a fair point, but my thought is you’re looking at different target audiences with different risk acceptance (in terms of going to a theater during Covid) there.

I wondered that too. But Sing 2 (Dec release) made a shade over $400 million so I didn’t think that really explained it either.

It’s weird in hindsight, as Encanto seems more popular than Coco at this point. I think Miranda and his ongoing reputation might have a lot to do with it. And with those songs, I also think it’s a more fun movie to watch over and over again, which seems to be a hallmark of family movie streaming success.

I just don't get why you are pushing this hard like this. Coco is getting an attraction in DCA and I'm sure they will clone it at some point over here. I'm sorry you don't like Encanto but it fits better in that spot in Animal Kingdom than Coco would. Coco would be an amazing fit in Epcot, Hollywood Studios, or Magic Kingdom, but I don't think it would fit well in Animal Kingdom next to Indiana Jones.

I'm still hoping it gets an attraction as well. It definitely more than deserves one and tbh could fit into all of the Disney parks pretty much. I would most go for it at Epcot or MK right now though. Behind BTM in that newer clearing and behind Anna/Elsa Meet and greet (since its defo a waste to put that there in a previous country spot but much more reasonable when paired with an attraciton at the back half.

Regardless, I don’t think saying Encanto wasn’t a commercial success works. It was the most streamed movie of 2022 and is clearly moving a ton of merchandise (by contrast, I rarely see Coco toys and clothing.) Box office numbers were one metric during a weird time.

Didn’t Disney make a point of saying it would stream on Disney+ after 30 days?

I would imagine a lot of people interested in Encanto had Disney+ and were willing to wait a short time.

Those are two major types of Disney park adult guests. They exist, it isn't made up. Yes, there is some overlap. Yes, neither one makes up a majority of Disney park visitors as most aren't this mentally invested in it, but that's what makes this a niche interest and a hobby for us rather than just a once or twice in your life visit.

'Indiana Jones' is a great choice, but 'Encanto' is a horrible a choice. It would have made a lot more sense to do the animated masterpiece 'Coco'. 'Coco' is so much better and literally grossed 4 times better profits at the box office.

But Coco makes even less sense for DAK? If they've gotta put Coco somewhere, it should clearly go in the Mexico pavilion, which already has a strong Day of the Dead representation.

Tropical Americas makes sense for the park with the "animals of each content and the human civilizations where they're found" motif it already has going for it. That's fine and I'm excited to see what they do with it. But how does Encanto, the movie, fit in to the theme and purpose of DAK? It doesn't, it's a movie about family and generational issues, so they're forcing in something something side character talks to animals. It is being placed into DAK because it looks good to shareholders to say they're creating a park experience based on one of their most successful recent films, not because it's the best choice for a new DAK attraction. Same situation with Zootopia.

Again, at leaaast though the land is Tropical Americas instead of an entire Zootopia land that we almost got.

I agree. My post was really just trying to point out that the box office disappointment couldn’t be “dismissed” as just Covid. Movies released shortly before and after were far more successful. As were similarly timed family films. As were films with abnormal D+ release plans.

Still, I don’t think Encanto’s box office is representative of its current standing within the company or public at large.
