MK Piston Peak and Villains Land Construction Thread

It's really a shame, this was an opportunity to do something different aimed more at the teen audience. Loved how Eisner would do scarier projects like Tower of Terror and Alien Encounter.

That's exactly what I'm getting at
Disney created some of the greatest villains on film, now Disney appears to be afraid to portray them how they were in those classic movies.

That doesn’t seem to be the case at all. Disney wants to create this land in a way accessible for all, not just teens and up. And that is the right choice for Disney. MK never needed to be edgy in any way.

It could and should still be accessible to all, just a bit more edgy.
At least approach the level of how some of those villains appeared in their films.

This is reminding me of the classic hells kitchen relay challenge where several cooks take turns making a simple dish. Im hoping this is not indicative of what we can expect with this project. By being all or nothing it may just end up looking unpalatable to everyone. That is not what made epic universe so epic. They stuck to their vision and made an amazing park. They knew when to aim to the kids and when to aim to someone else. This will be the innoventions of magic kingdom I hate to say. Trying to cater to several visions. Reminds me of robocop 2 when the focus groups starting writing his directives. What a mess.

The thing about trying to cater to everyone is that it makes little sense for Villains Land. If it was a full park then sure; it makes sense for Disney to not want a whole park that doesn't cater to children.

But this is just part of a park, one that is already filled with stuff for kids. If anything, having a land that caters a bit more to teenagers and up would make the park even more open to all sorts of families. No one is asking, or expecting a land that is as prohibitive as, say, Universal's HHN. No need for blood and scares every corner, just a bit more somber tone.

I wonder if this is really about being so desperate to cater to kittle kids, despite them already doing this everywhere else, or if it's just cheaper to make it so. Less time and money required than it'd need if they had to create an eerie atmosphere

Just what Disney World needs. Another lame rollercoaster like Slinkydog. Villains land should be exactly what is implies a park full of villans that are some of the best in the world. Its a simple solution. If you dont't like villains then don't go to the area. Disney take notice EPIC villains area is fantastic because it is truly a "Villains" area. Not some waterdowned version of what it should really be.

I honestly do not understand how the previous direction was inaccessible for all. I see plenty of kids lining up to meet Jack Skellington, plenty love Oogie Boogie and his antics. Yet somehow this needed to go all the way down to the Emperors New Groove to be accessible.

If it isn’t bright colors and smiling faces everywhere kids can’t handle it now? Whose kids are we talking about? My 5 and 7 year old liked material much spookier than even the initial proposal. My 7 year old is already saying he would rather go to Knotts than Disneyland because the rides at Disney are too slow for him.

Are we saying that all lands need to cater exclusively to the 3 and below demographic???

This is probably the most disappointing “go bigger and bolder” directive I have ever seen. It’s quite the opposite. The previous direction was the one that was bolder.

So I was wondering, is there anything happening on the Piston Peak sight that is worth talking about? ;) This thread is sadly lacking in photo's which is probably just as well since so many people have no understanding of that construction in an area that was a river (albeit fake) for over 50 years has a large degree of complexity and earthmoving involved. Did I say a large degree, I meant a gargantuous amount.

Contracts have been awarded and plans are in blue-print and the stages in it's construction are also complex and very important. What some need to know is even if you were to see the exact blue-prints there will be probably hundreds of changes that are necessary due to mind changes and/or unforeseen issues will happen. Every change order goes with an change in over all cost (seldom downward btw), so discussion will be over a very long period of time.

Until all the land shaping is done and they have had time to evaluate the chances of everything working to plan, nothing will be seen in the process of building things other than utility structures. And as @The Mom said, stay on topic. I almost was guilty of it again because very briefly thought I was in a different thread and almost posted. I hate being scolded for being a bad forum member. ]-:

Also, I’m curious if that land that they cleared next to the haunted mansion is to be considered a part of this construction process, or if that will turn into its own thing.

From the little I could see over the wall - I was surprised at what appeared to be a very tall and large pile of dirt. That may be to fill in the old river area? Or it may be from flattening the island?

The river is of course completely drained which means no water around the Tiana splash down (the water next to the flume) or below the boardwalk.

They’re working on the retaining wall now. It will probably be properly leveled once that’s in place.

This is pretty on-brand for modern Disney, being afraid of their own classic villains for some reason. I think Disney is confusing the idea of villains with monsters and horror in terms of the scary factor. It's Disney Villains not Universal Monsters. Pretty sure most kids would think the scary theming is cool but whatever.
We're keeping this thread for construction talk only. Please go to separate Villains thread for general discussion

Yes I agree MK’s version tells a better story but DL’s ride is better. DLP got the best of both worlds.
This was unexpected to me. How does mk's version tell the story better? It's not really a challenge, though certainly it's not my opinion, I am very curious as to why it's yours and apparently some others as well.
