Rumor Tokyo Disneyland Splash Mountain Retheme Discussion

If TWDC pays OLC enough MONEY, OLC will erase Tokyo's Splash.

But don't worry folks, whatever OLC puts in to replace their Splash, it will be MUCH BETTER than the TRASH we got in the US parks.

How did you not expect this? Japan loves cute furry animals (look at how popular their Splash is) and Disney promoted the hell of this film. $100 million was a GURANTEE.

I knew it would be successful, but not to this extent. If Zootopia 2 had merely matched the first film’s performance in yen, it would be grossing just under $50 million at current exchange rates. Japan is a mature market that rarely—if ever—sees this kind of increase for sequels.

In any case, my post wasn’t meant to suggest that I think Splash Mountain will likely be re-themed; rather, that OLC will almost certainly be looking to add Zootopia to the resort in some form in the future—preferably not at the expense of any existing land.

What land does TDL or DisneySea have left to expand in though?

All TDL really has left for its expansion space will cause a war (RoA) and DisneySea has the space near Indy, carpark by Toy Story Mania and Aquatopia.

Outside of (I guess) ROA and the carpark near TSM (as we already know Aquatopia is earmarked for something else, I personally think the area near TSM is going to be for a Spider-Man project): the last obvious space for Zootopia feels like a retheme for Splash Mountain and a takeover of Critter Country.

They can't sell merch of the brers anymore, but they can sell Nick and Judy.

They can't play the songs anymore from Splash, but they can play "Try Everything" and "Zoo" I guess.

And OLC actually puts effort into their stuff so I'd be willing to argue a Splash retheme by them would be more likely to be a success than what's happened in Cali/FL.

When Splash Mountain goes, I don't expect it to happen til the following things happen at TDR:

• Space Mountain and Wreck it Ralph are open
• Adventureland and Port Discovery get their makeovers

But I think it'll get rethemed along with their ROA going, as much as it'd suck, this is the Disney park that wants to actively rip out their Jungle Cruise.

As far as land that's ready to be built on, I would add the parking lot beside Tomorrowland. Only this and the space beside Indy seem big enough to support a full land without touching any existing part of the parks. There have also been hints OLC has been eyeing the backstage area between the two parks for future expansion, even if it requires pretty extensive relocation of existing buildings.

As mentioned, the bus lot behind Tomorrowland. Adventureland as proposed. Backstage beyond ROA has been heavily explored.

There of course may be more options.

Tokyo Disney Sea has expanded 4 times without touching the very obvious in-park expansion pad. There’s also the central energy plant beside the Arabian Coast.

I recall OLC's blue sky drawing for new Adventureland had the Incredibles train going through the land and jungles. They can easily change that to the train in Zootopia going through the different terrains - some actually built, some through the changing screen on the windows similar to the Howarts express at Universal. I don't think the Incredibles is that popular in Japan anyways.

A couple things…they can play the music and they still do. Still plays at the hotels. Still plays on the monorail. Still plays in the land.

OLC was already pitched a “bunny burrows” Zootopia retheme and they passed on it. Yes, this was before Zootopia 2, but the characters and film were already popular enough to consider adding to the park. They just don’t want some retrofit over one of their premiere attractions.

As for Jungle Cruise, it’s comparatively unpopular over there. I’m not shocked they’d remove it over something like Splash, a ride that is in their top 3 in the park and is now a unique asset to them. And with the merchandise, I expect Disney to eventually reverse course, at least in Tokyo, once a certain somebody is gone. He’s the lynchpin for this entire thing.

It’s hard for me to imagine Splash Mountain staying at TDL indefinitely. There is zero attachment to the IP there (not like there was an attachment in the U.S. either).

OLC may not be interested in spending a bunch to retheme a popular E-ticket now, but at some point they’re going to run out of room and need ideas on how to bring something new to the park. Replacing the IP no one’s ever heard of with one that would go gang busters with Disney otaku is going to be an easy choice when that time comes.

Maybe not indefinitely, but we’re at least decades away from them getting around to it naturally. In terms of quality and recency, it’s still one of the most “modern” things at that park. If they’re redoing lands based on how dated they are, they still have to hit Adventureland, Westernland, the rest of Fantasyland, and World Bazaar before they even get to Critter Country.

Also, Splash Mountain is an IP, and there certainly is an attachment to Splash Mountain over there, more than there is to Pirates, Mansion, Jungle Cruise, Thunder Mountain, etc. You’re looking at it in terms of a modern Disney design where the IP is pretty much a swappable variable, but with Splash and Critter Country out there, the entire area is designed around that storyline. When they get around to it, it won’t be a retheme. It will be a replacement.

As the last remaining Splash, I hope it sticks around at least another 20+ years. Now on the other hand, if in some twisted way the removal of the ROA at MK or removal of Jungle Cruise at TDL make it more likely that those attractions stay put at DLR then selfishly, I’m ok with that. What matters to me above all is preserving Disneyland. Ideally the ROA would still exist for fans that love it at MK but I do see a silver lining. I do think that the more these classic attractions go to Yesterland around the world the more likely they are to remain in their original form at Disneyland. And the longer an attraction remains the more likely it is that it will be preserved for its historical value.

I think if Splash Mountain at DL/MK would have survived the weird early 2020’s that it had a good chance of making it into this category with the POTC’s, HM’s, Jungle Cruises and ROA’s of the world. Granted, it didn’t have the Walt factor so that’s makes it more expendable in Disney’s eyes.
