Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

And then there's Avatar: A Planet With No Merchandise, AKA Avatar 3, which seems to be a story of diminishing returns against its brutally high production budget of $400 Million. This chart is adjusted for inflation, and Avatar 3 is noticeably under-performing it's previous versions, both domestically and globally.

Avatar 3 is sitting at about an $80 Million profit for Burbank, and it may barely crest $100 Million profit by Valentine's weekend. This is a notable downgrade in profit from 2022, and barely eeked that out owing to extremely strong numbers from China.

And yet, the clear data record and trend line is building here. Avatar 3 seems headed to a global box office that is only 60% of Avatar 2, and only 32% of Avatar 1. If Avatar 4 with a budget of $400 Million drops to only 70% of Avatar 3's global box office 3 years from now, it will lose $50 Million-ish for Burbank. And then Burbank already signed for an Avatar 5? With no merchandise sales and no pop culture impact in toy aisles or clothing departments? What's the financial exit strategy there for Avatar as a franchise?

Full Disclosure: I've never gotten Avatar. I don't know the characters, don't know the names, don't care. Never seen an Avatar anything at my front door on Halloween. Never seen a kid at Disneyland wearing an Avatar t-shirt. No toys at Target. Nothing on cereal boxes. Nothing. Seems to be a franchise built off a visually impressive 3-D visual from 2009. It's just really odd to me, but what do I know?! 🤪

$1.5 billion is starting to look questionable. It’s amazing that this kind of feels like a letdown, any other movie and that’s a massive success. Just goes to show how amazing the Avatar series has been, their “disappointing” box office is everyone else’s “dream” box office.

Sad day in cinema today, sorry @TP2000

Just saw this! Very sad! We loved her in of course Home alone and later Sh#tts Creek.

And I very recently saw her in a Capitol One commercial with Kevin Heart and Macaulay Culkin.

Very sad.

I’m not okay.

Me either. That one really took me by surprise and set me back a bit. I'm emotionally prepared to see other greats go who are far older than Ms. O'Hara was today; Carol Burnett, Diana Ross, and a few others.

But this one was tough to hear suddenly on the radio today. Far too young!

I was already going to just be at home tonight, so now I'm deciding which movie to watch; Best in Show, Waiting for Guffman, or A Mighty Wind. Probably going to go with Waiting for Guffman just for the Chinese restaurant scene. Plus a few Lola Heatherton and SCTV skits on YouTube. With a bottle of champagne and lots of toasts to a true Hollywood great!

I popped a Sauvignon Blanc in the fridge just to toast to her tonight when my husband gets home. Trying to decide if we put on Schitt's Creek or watch some of her films we have never seen before.

First estimates for weekend box office are in, gang! It was a slow weekend at the box office, despite 4 new movies coming out.

The notable thing here is Zootopia 2's resilience, it actually rose 9% from last weekend as it's the only family movie in the marketplace right now. And that means that Avatar 3 probably won't get to the domestic box office of Zootopia 2.
