Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

Maybe next year somebody will realize they should release something, especially something for the younger set, in early January?
Well its pretty much always been this way, January has been the award season rereleases and hold overs from the holidays. And going back and looking there hasn't been a major release in January that I can find in the last 50-60 years.

So can't see that changing anytime soon, if ever. But who knows maybe Netflix will change the game with their WB releases. ;)

Hiya gang! Sorry for the delay in data, as I got swept up into a spur-of-the-moment trip down to Arizona with old, old friends. And for someone who does almost nothing spur-of-the-moment, not even laundry, you can imagine how proud I was of myself. Also, whoever says that Canadians don't go to the USA anymore in winter has never been to Dove Mountain the 3rd week of January. The Hoser accents were so thick I thought I was in an old SCTV skit! 🤣

Here's box office for this past weekend. The two big Burbank tent poles were finally supplanted by something called Mercy. What's sticking out to me is the incredible legs that Zootopia 2 has. Will it end up with a higher domestic box office than Avatar 3? With only a $150 Million bargain basement Burbank budget (say that 3 times fast), Zootoopia 2 is a winner!

Would it confirm every single preconceived notion you could assemble about me to know that my aunt dated Rick Moranis?

And you are just mentioning this NOW?!?! You needed to lead with that over on the Disneyland forum 15 years ago!

I'm so jealous. I had my hilarious Aunt Ingrid, and she definitely had her brush-with-greatness moments as a La Jolla housewife, but I don't think she ever dated a fabulous Canadian celebrity!

Any dirt you can share? Mr. Moranis was probably a perfect gentleman, but still, any crazy nights in a Calgary dive bar during the '81 Stampede or anything your aunt may have mentioned? 😲

Overseas box offices have been fully updated now for this past weekend, so I thought it would be fun/interesting to see where Burbank's two big blockbusters stand as they begin to wrap up their theatrical run. I imagine both Zootopia 2 and Avatar 3 will be done by the end of Valentine's weekend in a few weeks. (Gentlemen! If you haven't already ordered flowers and made a dinner reservation, do it NOW! If you wait more than a couple days, you'll be trying to pretend that you actually meant to make pasta at home and the potted hydrangea you found at Home Depot is just as good as red roses. Gentlemen, get on it NOW! And no, flowers purchased at a freeway offramp at 5:45pm on February 14th do not count! And they smell like smog.)

Zootopia 2
has done extremely well for Burbank. It's tidy $150 Million budget helped immensely, but it's global box office haul would be impressive even if Burbank had wasted the same $275 to $350 Million it's wasted on recent bombs. I'm sure there's a Zootopia 3 in the works by now, right? Owing to a much stronger overseas box office (read: Communist China), the inflation-adjusted domestic box office for Zootopia 2 was just shy of its 2016 original, but it's global box office was bigger than the inflation-adjusted global number from 2016.

Zootopia 2 is on track to make at least a $600 Million profit for Burbank! 🤑

And then there's Avatar: A Planet With No Merchandise, AKA Avatar 3, which seems to be a story of diminishing returns against its brutally high production budget of $400 Million. This chart is adjusted for inflation, and Avatar 3 is noticeably under-performing it's previous versions, both domestically and globally.

Avatar 3 is sitting at about an $80 Million profit for Burbank, and it may barely crest $100 Million profit by Valentine's weekend. This is a notable downgrade in profit from 2022, and barely eeked that out owing to extremely strong numbers from China.

And yet, the clear data record and trend line is building here. Avatar 3 seems headed to a global box office that is only 60% of Avatar 2, and only 32% of Avatar 1. If Avatar 4 with a budget of $400 Million drops to only 70% of Avatar 3's global box office 3 years from now, it will lose $50 Million-ish for Burbank. And then Burbank already signed for an Avatar 5? With no merchandise sales and no pop culture impact in toy aisles or clothing departments? What's the financial exit strategy there for Avatar as a franchise?

Full Disclosure: I've never gotten Avatar. I don't know the characters, don't know the names, don't care. Never seen an Avatar anything at my front door on Halloween. Never seen a kid at Disneyland wearing an Avatar t-shirt. No toys at Target. Nothing on cereal boxes. Nothing. Seems to be a franchise built off a visually impressive 3-D visual from 2009. It's just really odd to me, but what do I know?! 🤪

She worked for I think a Delta hotel when they were out of Scarborough and that’s how she came to know the SCTV crew, he was a kind dork apparently, his roles were well suited. 🤣

One more fun fact to dox myself, I’m also second cousins (with generational removal) from June Lockhart and Gene Lockhart. Lassie, Lost in Space, Bob Cratchit.
