Trip Report Turns out birthdays CAN be magical- (finally) COMPLETE

Now that I’m home and settled back into reality, I thought I’d get started on my second trip report. While having been to Disney World more frequetly than I can count, I’d only visited the original park three times; all of which were several years apart. As I mentioned in my pre-trip report, I relocated out west for work not long after mine and my niece’s WDW adventure last summer; and despite now living fairly close by, I hadn’t yet had the chance to visit Disneyland. With my last several birthdays having been rough to say the least, I thought I’d do something more low key and relaxing; and what better way to celebrate than with the fab five, and copious amounts of churros!

To recap:
Who: Me (D)
What: Solo birthday trip
When: Sunday 9.21 - Thursday 9.25
Where: Disneyland Resort and Disney California Adventure
Why: To break my birthday slump

Day One:
Since I wasn’t leaving the state, I decided to drive this time around (that, and I may still be a bit traumatized from missing the flight with S 😅). After taking an extra long walk with my dog, and then subsequently coaxing her off of my suitcase with peanut butter, I was ready to hit the road. The travel Gods must’ve been with me, because I managed to reach Anaheim in just about 90 minutes; which for late Sunday morning on the 5, is damn near miraculous. When visiting Disney World, I always stay on property; but with Disneyland, there are a large number of hotels within walking distance; a lot of which I can use points for, so I decided to go that route. This time around, I stayed at the Westin on W. Katella, and I’m very glad that I did. The property itself is quite sizable, with a gorgeous lobby, and is surprisingly reminiscent of Coronado Springs Resort in Orlando. Once I finished handing over the car to the valet, and having my bags loaded onto the luggage cart, I headed straight to the check in desk; hoping and praying that my room would be ready. Imagine my surprise when, while speaking to the lovely woman at the front desk, she informs me that my suite is indeed good to go…Thinking I’d heard her wrong, I asked that she double check to make sure that she was looking at the right reservation; as it turns out, the travel Gods weren’t yet done with the gifts, because the hotel decided to upgrade me for my birthday(and the status I've accrued with Marriott, thanks to the seemingly endless work trips)!

After offering multiple rounds of profuse gratitude, I headed upstairs to a beautiful multi room layout with a living room type space/kitchen/dining room/large bathroom (which comes in REAL handy when you’re as girly as I am, and travel with enough skin care, etc. to keep you comfortable for twice as long as you’d be out of your house), and bedroom with the softest king size bed I’ve ever felt; topped off with a view of Disney California Adventure. I’ll admit, it did feel kinda silly to have all of that space for one person; but I would quickly get over that once the park days began. I literally never remember to take room pics, so here are the ones from the hotel website, to give you an idea:

After making a quick grocery store run and getting settled in, I noticed that my lunch reservation was approaching; so after changing, I headed out to Downtown Disney (anyone wanna guess how many times I called it Disney Springs?). One of the many good things about SoCal is that while it remains warm for most of the year, it’s a forgiving dry heat; so the walk was not only enjoyable, but didn’t leave me covered in a layer of sweat by the time I reached my destination. As a native NYer, I tend to walk pretty fast, so what Google Maps estimated as a 15 minute walk to the gates took me less than 10. Having already built in extra time, I decided to take my time, and have a look around as I made my way to the Grand Californian. Originally, I was a bit nervous about potentially missing out on the 70th Anniversary decorations, since we all know how big they go for Halloween and Christmas. I was quite happy to see that they’d found a great way to marry the two; without one outshining the other.

1759422950897.png

After taking some photos for my nieces, I popped into World of Disney to find the merch they’d requested. A sweatshirt for S
1759422986526.png

and a Tigger plushie for her sister, I. The mobile checkout really is a godsent, because all three check out counters were mobbed; so after quickly showing my receipt to the CMs, I continued on; making it to the GC with five minutes to spare; and thankfully so, because I’d forgotten how spacious that resort is! When making dining reservations, I remembered really enjoying the Craftsman Bar from my previous stay, so I figured why not head back for lunch on arrival day. Since at this point, it was ~ 1:00 PM, the pool area was fairly empty; which made for a lovely time taking in the sights of the resort (even with construction going on). Disneyland, as I would come to learn, also does a great job of celebrating Dia de Los Muertos during this time of year; as such, the Craftsman was offering multiple food and drink options. I decided to go with the “Receurdame,” after the song from Coco
1759423027479.png

* Casamigos Reposado, Passion Fruit Syrup, Hibiscus Liqueur, and Lemon Juice*

When I say that drink was good, I mean it was GOOD! Light, refreshing, with just the right amount of kick to it; 10/10 highly recommend. While savoring this beauty, I chose the Sticky Chicken Wings for lunch, and man, was that a wise decision; lightly fried and covered in Gochujang Korean BBQ sauce, with a side of sticky rice. Everything about the meal was exactly what I wanted, and I devoured every bit.
1759423125654.png

After settling the bill, I noticed that there was quite a commotion coming from the bar; turns out the Rams/Commanders game was on, and as girly as I may be, I love football. I decided to sit and watch for a bit; getting to know a few of the other guests, and finishing another Recuerdame, before heading back towards Downtown Disney. Fun Fact- even if you are going to Downtown Disney, and not the parks themselves, you still have to go through security on your way out of the hotel. Which, when doing so at the exact same time that Oogie Boogie Bash (Disneyland’s Halloween Party) is about to start, will cost you close to 20 mins 😩.

Still a bit full from lunch, I explored the opposite end of Downtown Disney; stopping into a few shops before coming across some beautiful Mickey themed kitchenware. FaceTiming my significant other (C) to share in my joy, he convinced me to only get the coupe glasses (but as he would learn when I got home, the charcuterie board also found its way into my trunk 😉)

1759423176845.png

Right outside the HOME store was this beautiful Encanto floral installation; celebrating Colombian culture and heritage featuring Isabella on this end of DD, and Mirabelle towards the other. The photos truly don’t do justice to how lovely they were:

With a few hours until dinner, I took my time walking back to the hotel; enjoying the fact that Anaheim allows for not having to drive pretty much everywhere you go.

Next Up: Speakeasies and Fireworks

My apologies for the delay in finishing up! The day after my last post, I was in a car accident that resulted in surgery on one of my arms. Thankfully, I'm now cast free (and remembered that my laptop has a dictation feature 😂 ), and feeling better. Onward and upward!

Day 4:

With this being my final day, I decided to spend it re-riding my favorites; and really focusing on the magic that is Disney. Originally, I had no intention on rope dropping; but with my continuing trend of waking up especially early on Disney days, I was bright eyed and bushy tailed by 6 AM. After spending some time FaceTiming C, and having gotten ready faster than I thought I would; I made my way to the esplanade with time to spare. Since EMH were at DCA, I headed to Main Street; and took photos of some of the details that I'd come to really appreciate over the last few days.
1765989916073.jpeg

Walking towards the hub, I decided to line up with those heading towards Tomorrowland; since I'd spent the least amount of time there, overall. The Disney snack gods were with me, because a popcorn cart opened up just before "Happy" by The Jonas Brothers (the official Disneyland 70th anthem) starting playing. I decided to stand on the sidewalk, and take it all in while the masses rushed to their chosen attractions. Up until this point, I'd forgone Star Tours in favor of more popular attractions; so I decided that this would be my first stop. Funnily enough, throughout the last couple of days, each time I'd passed by, there was an abnormally long queue for ST; so imagine my surprise when I approached, and found it to be an absolute walk-on. With literally no one else in the queue, I walked slowly; listening to the announcements, and taking photos. Boarding my flight was a breeze, with only a few rows having been filled in.
1765991595563.jpeg

After C-3PO landed us safely, I headed to my first LL of the day; Indiana Jones. I've said it once, and I'll say it again; this ride is awesome, and I can't wait for it to find itself in Animal Kingdom. Even without LL, the queue for Indy seemed to be moving pretty steadily; allowing me to snap a few pics that I'd been trying to get all week
1765992527148.jpeg

I also managed to snag a Haunted Mansion Holiday LL while helping Dr. Jones, so I strolled over to see Jack and Friends.
1765992527160.jpeg

One of mine and my grandmother's favorite things to do in Disney(regardless of coast) was ride the railway; and since I'd yet to do so for more than a single stop, that was next up on the agenda. But not without a stop at the Mint Julep Bar for some sugary and deep fried goodness (no photos, because I was way too engrossed in how good they were to take any).
1765992835136.jpeg

1765992974242.jpeg

A bittersweet feeling swept over me whilst riding the train; and I'd be lying if I said a tear didn't fall while I thought about the wonderful memories I'd made; and the realization that I'd be leaving the bubble the next day. After doing a full loop, I finally deboarded at Fantasyland; and in perfect timing, since the marching band was just beginning a set!
1765993248881.jpeg

Taking a few minutes to enjoy the musical mashup (not sure if the video clip will play), I finished off my popcorn from earlier in the morning, while making my way to see both everyone's favorite amphibious attorney, and the especially wicked step mother.

Glad to hear you are on the mend! Hope that the arm surgery wasn’t too painful and that the administrative headache of the accident wasn’t too bad.
Thank you! The first few weeks were rough, but I’m feeling much better, and PT started this week. Thankfully, it’s not my dominant hand/arm. At this point, I’m just glad to be out of that cast😩

The insurance company has been very on the ball dealing with that side of things; so all in all, I’d say I’m pretty lucky.

Day 4 Cont'd

Once Snow White's dreams came true, I made my way to Toon Town. I have so many fond memories from when it was still in WDW, so I really appreciate the fact that Disneyland still has one. Plus, there's just something about that welcome sign that brings a huge smile to my face.
1766242712503.jpeg

With time to kill before my Runaway Railway LL, I decided to check out the homes of the dynamic duo. The detailing really is nothing short of amazing; and who doesn't love a good pun?

1766243526055.jpeg

1766243541477.jpeg

Originally, I wanted to try and say hello to my namesake, but her line was posted at 20 mins. However, as luck would have it, by the time I made my way to the back of Mickey's place, his line emptied out to less than 10. With not too many people waiting, Mickey and his handler did a great job making each meet and greet engaging and fun. Once Mickey spotted the button on my shirt, he gave me a huge hug and kiss. Generally, I only do full on meet and greets if I've got a little one with me; but I'm glad that I took the time to say hello. After begrudgingly leaving Casa de Mouse, I caught a repeat viewing of"Perfect Picnic" at the El CapiTOON theater; before continuing with my farewell tour.
1766258150342.jpeg

I've never been a Star Wars fan per se, but even I will freely admit that Galaxy's Edge is not to be missed. Once I entered the land, I saw the large spaceship; and, for some strange reason, assumed that it was Rise of the Resistance. It wasn't until I made my way through the Single rider queue, and was given a color section to wait in that I realized that I was indeed about to ride Smuggler's Run...

Naked Gun Facepalm GIF

When solo, I tend not to ride MFSR since individual guests usually end up as Engineers; exactly the role I'd originally been given. However, the little boy with the family that I was assigned to ride with had a bit of a panic attack once assigned a Pilot position; and the CM let him know all that he'd be responsible for. His dad asked if I wouldn't mind switching with him; and after agreeing, I struck up a conversation with the boy in an attempt to distract him. Once I let him know that Engineer was definitely the easiest of the three jobs, he was to back to being excited. At the end of the ride, his parents thanked me again for switching, and the young man high fived me as we went our separate ways.

Before continuing on, I thought it best to ask where ROTR was before walking away; thankfully, I checked the app first, because it was indeed down for technical difficulties. With no idea when it'd be back up, I decided to take my chances and join the waitlist for Oga's. The time that the CM provided was quickly cut in half, as the larger group at the front of the queue changed their minds; so after about 15 mins, I was having a drink on Batuu. This was my first time at the bar area, so I got to chat with a few guests that were from the Philly area (how long do you think it took before at least one person started a "GO BIRDS!" chant?); discussing some of my old hangout spots from my time in grad school. Several of the drinks sounded good to me, but I stuck with Old Faithful, the Jedi Mind Trick (couldn't get a clear shot, but found this photo online).

*Ketel One Grapefruit & Rose Vodka, White grapefruit juice, blue curaçao, lime juice, and Falernum syrup

After saying goodbye to my new friends, I checked the app, and saw no listed time for Rise. Having nothing else to do for an hour, I decided to make my way over there, and ask a CM if they had any updates. Once I reached the entrance, I saw that the wait time was now listed at 30 mins, but the outer queue was completely empty. Since I was by myself, I asked the CM if stand by or single rider would be faster. He shrugged, and said they'd be about the same; but since you miss a few things via single rider, I chose to check out standby. This decision would turn out to be the wisest thing I'd do the whole trip; as the following picture is how long it took me to get from the entrance of Rise to Lt. Beck:

1766258735767.jpeg

I passed not a single person between the CM outside and the room where we get our "mission." Never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined boarding one of, if not the most, popular ride in a Disney park in under five minutes. It took me more time to wait for Oga's Cantina than it did to ride ROTR from start to finish. Again, I'm really not a Star Wars girl; but between it being a total walk on, and everything working as it should; this might have been my most enjoyable experience of the trip! As you might expect, by the time I exited, the line was packed, and was now posted at 75 minutes. After giving myself a pat on the back, I took a few photos for my sister; and made my way to Bayou Country.

Next Up- Winnie the Pooh and custom ordered ice cream bars too!

Once I reached Bayou Country, Winnie and Eeyore were out for a stroll; having stopped to wave at and/or hug both myself and a young lady wearing celebration buttons.
1766775506594.jpeg

After receiving a personal escort to the Hundred Acre Wood from Eeyore, I boarded my beehive, and said hello to the rest of the crew. My Tiana's LL started mid ride, so I made my way there next. A special thank you to everyone who warned me that the water level on Tiana's Bayou Adventure in Disneyland is a completely different animal compared to what most of us are used to in Florida. With that knowledge onboard, I stopped in the neighboring bathroom to change into flip flops and put on a poncho. With the temperature now at 82, the standby line was packed, but thankfully, LL wasn't nearly as bad. A few times I stepped to the side to admire the details throughout the queue. While some are the same as the ones in Orlando, there are a few that are not only unique here, but incredibly beautiful and enhancing to the lore of Princess and the Frog. Hearing the music put me in such a fantastic mood that I'd almost forgotten about the drop until we were halfway up the incline. With just enough time to brace myself, I managed to pull the hood of my poncho up before essentially taking a shower with four other people. I've never been so grateful for a $4 piece of plastic in my life, as myself and the person in behind me were the only ones that weren't all but soaked.

Pretty much everything in the Critter Co-op was the same as what S and I found last summer, so I continued on to my favorite Disneyland specific lunch, Bengal Barbecue! If you haven't been, it's a quick service featuring delicious skewers. On the walk from Tiana's to Adventureland, I placed an order for one Banyan (hot and spicy beef) and one Jungle (bacon wrapped asparagus) skewer. I don't know what it is about the smelled of grilled meat, but by the time my order was ready, I was all but salivating. One of the Disney based YouTube channels that I follow, Mammoth Club, recommended placing meat from the Banyan beef skewer inside of the Cheesy Garlic Pretzel bread sold at a few carts around the park. Having picked one up earlier in the day, I saved half to give this a try, and wow, am I glad I did. Something about the combination of the garlic and cheese inside the bread, and the sauce from the skewers made my tastebuds sing. If I hadn't been in public, I would've licked my fingers cleaned.

Now happily full from my well balanced lunch (the asparagus totally made everything else healthy), I said goodbye to this park for now, and made my way over to DCA. Dessert was calling my name by the time I crossed the esplanade, and what better place than Clarabelle's. Similar to Gibson's, they offer a plethora of ice cream treats, but Clarabelle's is also known for their custom ice cream bars. Your choice of flavors (the bars were only available in vanilla at this time), chocolate coating, and toppings put together for an extra special treat. This time I went with dark chocolate and halloween themed Mickey head sprinkles, and every bit was even more delicious than the last.
1766775525460.jpeg

Pro tip- wait a few minutes before taking your first bite, as not doing so can result in you looking like a child that's just smashed food onto their face. While waiting for things to solidify, I wandered around the store, and found a Disneyland themed Starbucks tumbler for S and a Frozen mug for her sister, I. Once the ice cream bar was sufficiently hardened, I wasted no time going to town on that bad boy. Was it graceful? Nope. Was it worth every awkward head tilt and the balancing act between my phone, my gift bag, and the paper tray? Yup!
were the millers no ragrets GIF

The front section of DCA is one of my favorite parts of Disneyland as a whole, so once I cleaned off my hands and face, I spent a while sitting on a nearby bench; people watching and really appreciating all of the details and hard work that went into making this all come to life. After checking the app, I was able to snag a 5PM LL for Web Slingers; so with around 90 mins to spare, I decided to make my way to Mickey's Philharmagic. This show will always hold a special place in my heart; while always a great place to beat the heat, there's something about watching Donald cause a bit of havoc across so many Disney classics that makes me smile from ear to ear. On my way to Avengers Campus, I took one more spin around Monstropolis, since the wait time was posted at 5 mins . Thankfully, Roz was working this time, and told me to "smile; it's not like you have to work here!"
Monsters Inc Monday GIF by Disney Pixar

One thing I noticed over the course of the trip is that the use of Magic Bands is much less prevalent in California, and as a result, I had a very interesting experience while scanning into my Web Slingers LL. Throughout the trip, I'd been using my MagicBand+, and Web Slingers was no exception; except the woman at the scanner next to me was apparently unaware that MagicBands could be used in DL, because she openly (and loudly) accused me of using my Apple Watch to fake a scan. This woman stepped away from her family and stood in my way; calling for a CM to stop me, because she was convinced that scanning your wrist only worked in FL; and that if I didn't insert my phone, there's no way I had a lightning lane. I will admit to getting a bursting sense of satisfaction at pulling my sleeve back, displaying my MB, and showing her that they are in fact a thing at Disneyland. The CM then intervened, and told her that I did indeed have a LL(they were standing right there when the Mickey head turned green), and that MB were absolutely usable on both coasts. All the way through the queue and throughout the pre show, the woman continued to shoot daggers my way; and I'd be lying if I said that I didn't have a bit of a smirk on my face when her family and I got loaded into the same vehicle around Stark Labs. Never in my life have I seen a person try so hard to avoid eye contact with another person😂.

In order to be able to make my way through the rest of my park plans, a hotel break was in order; so from here, I made my way back to the ride share pickup area (but not before catching a glimpse of my girl sporting her Halloween finest.

1766781470385.jpeg

Having not realized just how much walking I'd been doing, my feet were all but throbbing by the time I hit the lobby. The hotel hot tub was calling my name, so I quickly changed and took a glorious soak to recharge my muscles. From here, I relaxed in my room, before making my way back to the parks for one last night of Disney magic.

Next up- Monsters, Mickey, and a bittersweet goodbye

While still in Disneyland, I managed to snag a LL for Incredicoaster, so after a much needed hotel break, I made my way back to the parks. Only to be completely dumfounded at the sheer number of people trying to enter both Disneyland and DCA. On both of the previous nights, I was able to stroll right through the turnstiles from the late morning on; but apparently, Wednesday night is an extremely popular time for both locals and visitors to stop by. After making my way back into DCA after what felt like forever, I booked it to Pixar Pier, so as to not miss my nearly ended window. Thankfully, I made it just in time, and after entering, requested to wait for the front row again. I did have to wait a few turns, but it was insanely worth it. Being able to see the lights across the pier after dark was amazing enough; but to do so with a completely unobstructed view from that high up, and at that speed, is an experience I've been thinking about since then. Plus, chasing Jack Jack is all the more fun when the track is lit up. After saying goodbye to the back half of the park, I made my way towards Avengers campus; stopping to take a few final photos along the way.

1767386398785.jpeg

I've never been so grateful to have spent $30 in my life, because without a LL, the line for Guardians: MAD once I reached it was over 90 mins long😮. Even with LL, the wait felt like it was crawling, but that quickly changed once we got inside. After rescuing baby Groot from the escaped collection, I realized that I hadn't eaten since Bengal Barbecue; and with the adrenaline from the evening having worn off, I was now getting pretty hungry. I'd been wanting to check out the food from the restaurant themed after Pym Labs this time, so I mobile ordered the Pepper Particle Pasta from the Test Kitchen; and headed back to Pym Tasting Lab for a different drink. With a recommendation from the CM, I ordered the X-Periment, and relaxed before the second half of the night. My feelings on the drink were "meh🤷‍♀️," but it does also come in the same cool measuring cup; so now I had one for C!
1767466928292.png

*not my photo* *Tequila with Mango and Habanero Syrups and Mango-flavored Popping Spheres*

Not quite ready to leave DCA, and intrigued by the self filling beer taps, I ordered a SLO Brew Cali Squeeze Blood Orange Hefeweizen (a favorite of mine that's about half price when I purchase it at home), and enjoyed the surrounding views before closing out my trip with a few more hours across the way.

1767395338768.jpeg

1767399762979.jpeg

When I crossed back into Disneyland, I stopped for one last box of popcorn, and popped it into my backpack for later. Next up, I headed to my second to last LL of the trip, one more ride with Indiana Jones. I couldn't help but snag a churro on the way out, as a treat during a visit to the Enchanted Tiki Room. With the exotic wildlife having successfully appeased the Gods, I bid farewell, and continued on to Tomorrowland for a spin around Space Mountain. Despite the ride itself being indoors, it still feels (to me, anyway) a bit special to ride it at night. With so many additional people in the park, the energy at the loading gates felt even more electric; and I couldn't help but ride with what I'm sure was a goofy grin on my face.
1767415718177.jpeg

Somehow, it had just now dawned on me that once I exited the park, my successful three day birthday trip would be over. Therefore, I was in no rush to make my way back towards Main Street; and despite the sizable crowds, I did my best to linger and soak up what was left. Thankfully, I'd remembered upon entering the park that morning to pre order my absolute favorite Disneyland specific treat, the Raspberry Rose Macaron from Jolly Holiday Bakery. As many times as I've had one of these, you'd think I'd be sick of them by now. But I have to say, this one never misses. I'd been pushing back my pickup window for hours, but with the last one steadfastly approaching, I made my way there to secure the goods.
1767416181514.png

*I was way too in my feelings to remember to snap a pic*

Luckily, as I was making my way to Jolly Holiday, I ran right into Paint the Night! Despite having just seen it the night before, I couldn't help but stop and enjoy. Once I picked up my order, I exited just in time to watch as the Head Mouse in Charge closed out the show; wishing him good bye, and saying thank you for turning a time of year that usually ends in sadness for me, into one I, happily, won't soon forget.
1767416682801.jpeg

Being able to catch the 70th anniversary was quite special for me, as I've yet to miss a Disneyland anniversary celebration pretty much since I was born. With another one now in the books, I snapped one last photo of the lawn in front of the train station (does this have a specific name?), as well as the ever so cool Oogie Boogie themed DCA sign.
1767416911928.jpeg

1767416925565.jpeg

After a shockingly short wait for a Lyft, and still on a high from the night, I packed up my things and got ready for bed; but not before finishing my final fix of Disney popcorn, and taking a few minutes to be grateful for everything I experienced this week.

Thank you all so very much for taking the time to read my second (of hopefully many) trip report. This one did take quite a while to finish, but I really appreciate you guys for sticking it out with me; and for the well wishes after my car accident. The world is a crazy place right now, and I'm incredibly glad that we all have this little corner of the universe to, even temporarily, leave it all outside, and focus on something that makes us all truly happy.

Hopefully, you'll join me for my next Disney adventure, as my sister and I will be visiting Disneyland Paris in the fall! After that will be the long awaited (meaning she's been asking for the trip since the day we got home from the last one)
Adventures of Auntie and S Part Two (coming in 2027)!

Small bit of bonus content:

Two days after I left Disney, C met me in LA for a day at Universal Studios Hollywood. While we did spend a good chunk of time in the Harry Potter section, I was also on the hunt for a few pictures of a particular pastry. @k8einwdw, I remember from your TRs that L has a special place in his heart for the big Joffrey's frosted donut with sprinkles, so while in Universal, I made a stop in Springfield, USA/Simpsons Land, to snag a pic of the famous Lard Lad version for him. 😊

Awww I’m honored you thought of us on your trip! 🥰 He would lose his mind over the size of the Simpsons donuts! 😂 I’m glad you had a great birthday trip, I always love reading your reports!
When we got to the park, I remembered the donuts, and blurted out "I HAVE to get a pic for baby L!" C, of course, had no idea what I was talking about; but after I explained he said "yeah, that's actually adorable. We have to do that."🤣
