Putting aside all the broader considerations, and they are profound and very potentially calamitous, at the most basic level Netflix just can’t make movies. On occasion they’ll bring in a big name director that can make something interesting but most of their content is soulless garbage. I say this as someone who really enjoys the Fast and Furious series, who will defend the MCU endlessly, who adores 80s and 90s action garbage and B-movies, who even finds amusement in the Twilight series for its comedic earnestness - almost none of what Netflix produces is worth watching on any level. It might as well be AI.

We will see what Netflix does with the new Harry Potter series. I’d assume they will keep season one team together since it’s already in production

CompanyMarket Cap (USD)
Netflix (NFLX)$443.86 billion
Disney (DIS)$189.75 billion

Ummmm...
Market Cap is not indicative of who is the largest media distributor.

Outside of Youtube Disney is the largest distributor, and will likely continue to be so after this acquisition by Netflix (if it completes successfully).

Is this true?
Recent data suggests the combined viewership of Netflix + Max + HBO content would surge past 20% of US streaming viewership. This effectively creates a singular entity larger than Disney in terms of pure consumer attention time.
You have to expect that there is a big overlap with the Netflix and HBO customers, so it's unlikely to go up that much.

I would have expected better from you. So now viewership matters? LOL! This is weak.

The valuation of the company is all that matters. It shows which ones are better run and deliver more value for shareholders. No doubt Netflix is more adapt as not only a studio but a distributor of content because that's where investors are putting their money.

$Dis one year roi -8.7%
$NFLX one year roi + 8.4%

While Netflix has indicated little interest in retaining the cable and sports programing owned by WBDiscovery. It will be interesting to see where this goes.

That isn't what was being discussed though, this isn't about who has a higher valuation. It was about who is the larger media distributor, and its Disney by far of the traditional media companies outside of Youtube.

Don't forget: WBDiscovery is sloughing off all that Discovery and incidental channels before the merger. Which might make regulatory concerns a bit less concerning.

Correct, Netflix is acquiring the studios and streaming services (Warner Bros. Pictures, HBO) but not the linear cable networks

Disney is the larger traditional distributor because they control the twilight of Cable TV while building their streaming platform with Hulu/D+

I guess Netflix is betting on Cable (maybe theatrical?) not being important in the future.
