Japan Trip Booked - Your Recommendations or Advice?

I started booking hotels for the trip last week and somehow was able to grab this hotel way cheaper than the other ones in the area, so I'm really excited about that.

We're onto booking hotels for Osaka and Tokyo, trying to figure out what we want to do first and then finding a hotel near a train station that works best for our plans.
Let us know what you think afterwards! I’m interested to hear others experiences as well. Out of curiosity, what room type did you go for?

Narrowing down hotels in Osaka and Tokyo was really challenging - there’s so many possibilities and choices to evaluate. I think your plan of figuring out what you want to do and then using that to narrow down lodging is a great idea. Good luck!

I would also recommend if you're gonna be in osaka to do a day trip to Nara and a day trip to Kyoto. both magical places to go too. I had the best time there. Nara is known for its ancient deer who come up to you and you are able to touch along with ancient wood temples. And Kyoto is Kyoto, 2000+ temples. You can use your metro card to go to both kyoto and Nara, and is worth it

I agree! Very pragmatic approach.

We booked long ago, long before we had a sense of what we wanted to do in each city, so I just tried to book into areas that felt central to the main locales. Hopefully it works out for us.

At Disney, I stayed at Tokyo Bay Maihama First resort. It was the cheapest option in the monorail area and I'd highly recommend for a budget option nearby. It has really good shuttle service and I never waited more than 5 minutes for a shuttle. The ship cabin room is extremely well-themed and is my favorite hotel room I've ever stayed in because of how immersive it was. The lobby area is spacious/quiet and the service from the front desk/bell desk and restaurant was very good for the cost of the room. I think this hotel tends to get a little overlooked by westerners but is worth booking for the price.
I stayed here in May 2023 and it was very nice, but their English service isn't great. Then again, I feel like even Disney hotels in TDR don't have the greatest English speakers either.

I ended up getting the castle-style moderate room - it was only $5 a night more and had more space, so it felt like a no-brainer.

Yeah, the plan is to base out of Osaka but do days in Kyoto and Nara during that time. We're sticking to that area for the New Year's part of the trip because it seems much cheaper than Tokyo, where the prices fall on Jan 1/2.

I was in Osaka for the Expo and did a day trip to Nara, Byodo-in temple and Fushimi Inara, coming back in the evening. It was a wonderful way to spend a day (though did log nearly 44,000 steps).

For hotels I stayed north of the dotonbori area at the Holiday Inn Express City Center. It wasn't an exciting hotel, but was inexpensive and the room/breakfast was nice. The location was very convenient to the subway as well.

A heads up on the castle room - I also stayed in one of these for 1 night - it does have much more room, but I didn't like it near as well as the nautical themed room - the theming was very very light (like couldn't really have identified it as castle-themed if it hadn't have been named that on the room type), and also had a lot more noise - I think families often book these, and the walls are thin - I had screaming kids on both sides of the room :/ It did however have a good view - I could see the Disneyland castle and fireworks from the room even though I was only on the 3rd floor. So a bit of different experience than the nautical/ship cabin room. But, the castle room is probably close to double in size to the ship-themed one. So pros/cons.

I mean, we don't plan to be in the room all that often, so having a little more room to navigate in at night/morning worked better than any theming.

I’d also recommend a trip to Himeji from Osaka - its castle is amazing. Definitely go to Kyoto but decide what you want to see and plan out an itinerary

I don’t even know 😭🥹!!

I booked a piazza view room and we got this insane harbour view?!

It looks like you were assigned one of the best piazza view rooms in the hotel. Judging from your image, it looks like you are at the end of the wing (top left yellow in the image).

That QUITE LITERALLY looks lilke the room we stayed in like 5 years ago! lol

We're headed back in May... Thinking we're going to do Fantasy Springs because of the close proximity to the new land. But MAN, this pic has me second guessing.

We LOVED our room and the hotel. Really just amazing.

Fantasy Springs itself is gorgeous, and the hotel looks lovely (from the outside), so I’d definitely love to do a night there. It’s certainly a schlep to walk back there, so the benefit of the hotel could be great.

So only downside of Disneyland was they are running Beauty and the Beast preshow in b-mode. Didn’t get to see either animatronic in that scene 🥺
