Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

I still haven't seen the movie. Last Friday I went to see Corpse Bride 20th anniversary. This is a movie I own and can watch anytime. So you can tell what my "Must see" priorities are. Going by the Tron Ares trailers, it just wasn't very exciting and says nothing about the plot. It just didn't grab me enough to spend $12 for a ticket and $10 for popcorn.

However, if you look at what happened to the other previous two films it is just following the already set course -

Original TRON ( 1982 ) - flops at box office, panned by critics.
Later on becomes cult classic.
Eventually hailed as a groundreaking film and becomes a pop culture icon.

TRON Legacy ( 2010 ) - flops at box office, panned by critics.
Later on becomes cult classic.
Eventually hailed as a groundbreaking film and becomes a pop culture icon.

TRON Ares ( 2025 ) - Flopping at box office, being panned by critics…

I see a pattern here.

So TRON 4 should arrive in about 15 to 20 years ….

The film destroys everything built up in Legacy and replaces it with characters/storys no one cares about. That's not perceived, that's a fact.

Disney purposefully made a film Tron fans (there are dozens of us) did NOT want. Took the story and possibilities of the previous film(s) and threw them in the trash.

I hope the people who made all those decisions lose their jobs.

I assume you mean domestic because worldwide it’s at $76M already. At $46M domestic currently, I think max I see is $120M. But that’ll be a stretch in my opinion, but we’ll see.

Theoretically, Tron could have/should have increased its reach over time, IMO.

I saw the Seth Rogen/Keanu film. It was OK, kinda blatantly preachy, but a good time.

When was Tron Legacy hailed as a ground breaking film and cult classic?

Right now, as it seems to have gained quite a rep online.
Noticed this recently.

At the time of release in 2010, it was often noted at the time for its cutting edge 3D visuals.
The CGI graphic images combined with the 3D stereoscopic effects were considered a step ahead at the time.


I like TRON Legacy a lot, but it is the first film that was the true one off.
Unique, and very uniquely made.

Yes, I can see how some fans would be quite disappointed that the set up to the story via TRON Legacy was not continued.
I can get behind that, as I was really hoping Garrett and Olivia would be back.
We were supposed to get this, but alas, Disney decided not to go in that direction.
At least not this time around.

TRON Ares is setting up a new story…the ‘Dillinger’ angle….and one that gives the impression that we may eventually be seeing it neatly dovetailed into that desired Sam & Quorra tale in the end.
The little hints at the films beginning, as well as the mid-end credits scene give the impression something more is coming.


After all the bad press and slow box office numbers, not sure what form a story continuation will take.
But yeah, give it a decade and maybe we will have a TRON film that will combine both of these stories together.

Have you watched One Battle After Another with DiCaprio??? I was a fantastic movie. It will definitely be getting multiple Oscar nominations.

I know a couple weeks ago K-Pop Demon Hunters was trotted out as basically the one example of a massive streaming success… but I think they left hundreds of millions of dollars on the table with that one too.

Almost assuredly the sequel will start with a flashy theatrical engagement and a singalong bonus engagement.
