BTMR having a haunted backstory isn’t new. It’s been established that the mine was built on the site of an ancient burial ground, which has displeased the spirits there. I like that they’re using lighting and sound effects to tell that story better.

Which is what is plastered all over the queue… isn’t it? Not that this is an abandoned gold mine. That would just be silly.

Is it lightning or thunder we are talking here? I actually love the name tying into the story. It’s starts with a big thunder clap.

I was referring to the light-ING effects in the caverns, not lightning lol But yes I agree that it’s a great idea to have a thunder clap to tie into the name.

they reference rumbling and personifying the mountain a couple times. could we get a revamped collapsing cave finale vs explosion?

My theory is that our finale scene will be unique, themed around the gold that Barnabas T. Bullion is aiming to acquire. We could come close to the gold before the cave collapses with our train exiting the scene at the last second.

Big Thunder really doesn't have a story as much as a backstory. Attractions built pre-Eisner were basically a series of loosely connected experiences leading to a climax. When Eisner came in "Story" started to become more important than creating a satisfying experience. Especially with the infamous run from Splash Mountain to Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage where virtually every new attraction revolved around what was basically the same plot.

Personally I think the loud sounds at the beginning should be grandfathered in. I fully expect them to be nonexistent when this reopens though.

Haunted stories are fine to me.. when talking about things mysteriously breaking down, runaways, etc. That is more like a 'cursed' or possessed kind of story. The ride never showed any ghosts.. or spook show kind of stuff. It was always very much a subtle thing about why this mine is in the state of abandonment and kind of out of control.

But when you change that to start showing ghosts, or make it a 'look out for the ghosts' kind of thing it really changes the tone and presentation IMO. It goes from the idea of 'tales' or lore.. to 'haunted house/spook show' kind of stuff. Very different.

I do agree with that, I am hoping this effect doesn't fall into that category, though. My reading is more that it might read as something a bit creepy and unexplained without being overtly supernatural. Must admit that I never really thought of it as a 'haunted' mine train as such, but then it seems I was missing something!

I think the added backstory is fun for folks who want to investigate and find out more

I do feel like just paying attention through the queue and on the ride you get the sense "something went wrong" and that there is no one driving the trains, etc .... And I think this effect can work to just enhance that feeling of foreboding even if you don't know the full backstory

BTM with spooky elements and Haunted Mansions is.. haunted.

Both rides are beyond where Piston Peak is going to be and this would be a good way to transition in to a darker and creepier Villains Land.

I'm more skeptical on this one. I LOVE brining an enhanced rainbow cavern experience to the intro. The red lighting concerns me. That's a very short period of time to tell a story. And, I doubt it will be very obvious why it's happening. And, where will it go from there. Obviously, we'll have to see how it's implemented. But, I still am a fan of realism/believable logic in rides like this.

And I'm not saying they have to be realistic - they are all fantasy. Rather, that the event are somewhat believable in timing, events, etc. in the fantastic/made up realm where they happen. That's where Sparrow in Pirates fails IMHO. It feels more Fantasyland than the height of Disney Imagineering stories. It is literally "It's a glorious 3 hour finale"...
