News Hatbox Ghost coming to Walt Disney World's Haunted Mansion

I think they should stop updating the Haunted Mansion and work on other attractions.
I mean, they are to an extent. Peter Pan recently got an updated scene, Small World got new figures and music, Country Bears got a new show, Big Thunder is undergoing an extensive update, etc. I honestly think Haunted Mansion just gets more “air time” because it’s a classic with an abundance of highly publicized ideas that never made it into the final product, so it’s easy to fish something out of the hat and elicit a positive fan reaction.

Frankly, I agree -- those cobwebs, dusty furniture and ancient effects look tired and run down.

It's time to put in NEW cobwebs, dusty furniture, and video screens emulating the ancient effects.

I'd say they now break even. WDW used to be the superior version. The WDW version still has the portrait gallery and endless stairway in the ride. (Yes, I'm aware the portrait gallery is part of the queue underneath the railroad tracks in the DL version). So Hatbox Ghost ghost distracting from the candelabra brings it down a notch to be on par with DL.
That is true, I would argue WDW had the superior version of Mansion in the 70s 80's and 90's. DL started to eclipse it in the mid 2000s with enhancements. in 2007 WDW re-gained the crown with the re-haunting but lost it again in 2011 with PLQ and Interactive Hitchhikers.

Is one Danny Devito animatronic too much to ask for?
Only if he's playing this guy.

I could go either way on “he doesn’t belong in the endless hallway because ghosts shouldn’t appear until the ballroom scene thing “ (that was definitely my initial reaction when this was first announced) but.. the scene doesn’t work as well now. The hatbox ghost completely draws your attention away from the endless hallway scene. If they wanted to change things up they could have put him in the graveyard.

I would have put him exactly where he is at Disneyland.

Seems like they keep touching it because it sells tons of merch. Not great logic, but that’s my guess.

MK’s Pirates could use some love, mainly de-movie-ing it so the ride isn’t just “Where’s Jack” anymore. Inversely, Country Bears could use more merchandise, it’s very upsetting that with how popular the new show is, there’s only a single cheaply made T-shirt and pressed pennies. They didn’t even make a plush Big Al to match Oscar’s!

As they should have done when he "didn't work" in the attic.

Looks right at home here:

In my headcanon he's the spook that startled the Caretaker and his dog.

With Kim Irvine headed out the door for retirement and contracts expiring, I think Disney rushed a few projects to get them done. Now that she is gone, I don't think any Mansion will be getting any updates anytime soon except for the new bride and hitchhikers for WDW.

Kim was head of a Disneyland specific team. She wouldn’t have been all that involved in anything with the Magic Kingdom.

Of course but if that didn't work then the graveyard. I get the feeling that their ego wouldn't let them put that high tech animatronic somewhere with all that commotion. Storytelling be damned.
Even the updated figure needs very specific conditions which is why it’s in this corner that is suddenly so differently lit and staged. Placing the figure in the graveyard probably would have had more of a negative impact on that scene.

I find that hard to believe. The graveyard is already chaotic with stuff everywhere. Don't see how he would have negatively impacted that scene more than the endless hallway which is clearly supposed to have the riders focus.

The figure needs specific and controlled lighting conditions. The graveyard is chaotic and rather bright, with a lot of light in different directions across the entire space. That would have to be toned down to in at least one area to make the figure’s signature effect work.

It’s pretty easy for us to say put it here or there, but we have to keep in mind there are all kinds of logistics that may prevent some of the “better” locations, especially considering this was done in a short timeframe with minimal downtime.

I appreciate the updates Disney has done at HM, almost have to remind myself it was an opening day attraction.

I still want to know the details about what was supposedly different about Florida's ride that was preventing them from just replicating the same exact scene from Disneyland. The story was that there were structural challenges that made it very cost prohibitive to expand the balcony and install the figure. Which I dunno about, it's hard to suss out what stories are accurate or not. Even when they sometimes come from Disney employees. Like the various BSing about the Horizons sinkhole or the Yeti.

Not anymore.
No, I very much doubt they're going to make further changes to the ride based on the movie given the negative reception and poor performance. I believe they once had an idea of inserting crap from the Eddie Murphy movie as well, but that was also killed when that movie also flopped. The Hatbox Ghost AA they did use doesn't even seem to be based off the movie character anyway.

If he was just a regular ghost without the head vanishing trick, he would probably work fine in the graveyard. I can see the current figure being a bit iffy there for the reasons stated. He'd probably also be a distraction there too unless he was somehow given his own little space away from the others. I don't disagree that it still would have been better than the hallway though.

That would be the only positive development to come out of bringing the current DL Bride East.
Getting the new bride would still also be a positive development as she is still infinitely better looking than Constance. Not scary and far from perfect, but better than what is there now. Unfortunately I am pretty certain we'll never get a properly scary bride again given the way things are.

I did play around with an editor to see if I could create a sort of hybrid between the new bride design and the classic iteration. One version with a little bit of the facial features still slightly visible but heavily shadowed, another completely blacked out. I think I still prefer not seeing any of her face other than the glowing eyes.

Pirates was so much better without the movie tying into it

Infrastructure. It’s weird how that was stated so many times but people keep repeated “structural” instead.
I don't remember what the term was, but it's not weird at all that someone might mix those words up. Both are pretty broad terms.

Either way, I'm not interested in arguing over vocabulary. I just want to know what the problem allegedly was. I'm also curious if multiple people were told about it from different sources.

I don't know nothing about nothing. But if it's infrastructure, they probably couldn't get enough additional power/data/other (pneumatic air?) to that spot. Could also be a building code thing that says in Florida you can't run x lines within y feet of z structure.
