News Avatar Experience coming to Disneyland Resort

I'll mourn the loss of Monsters but as far as all of the recent Disney removals I'll mourn it the least.

I was very impressed with how Disney handled Avatar at DAK and while Flight of Passage made me a bit queasy (I have mild motion sickness) the detail surrounding the attraction more than made up for it.

The DCA version of Mickey's Philharmagic is rather sad though (especially in comparison to the far superior MK version).

I actually really like WEB slingers (might be in the minority there) and liked it better after I experienced it than I thought I would based upon reading the discussion about the ride here.

Matter of opinion, though I'm sure the majority agrees. I can't stand Avatar and I haven't been able to do any E-Ticket attraction Disney has built in decades. They're all thrill rides instead of all-age attractions ala Mansion or Pirates.

A Coco boat ride will be nice, hopefully, but I genuinely enjoy Monsters. And it's still better than any other "kiddie" ride in that park. Okay, except WEB Slingers, which I do also really enjoy, but Monsters has figures rather than screens.
This attraction is a boat ride using the same ride system as Shanghai Disneyland’s Pirates. That isn’t really a thrill ride.

Also, you don’t need to enjoy the IP to enjoy the ride or the land. Many people don’t love Avatar but absolutely adore the land at DAK. It’s gorgeous and this promises to be as well.

Only “a portion” of the backlot? Do they think we’re stupid and might confuse backlot with the entirety of Hollywoodland or are they just saying that because the Sunset theatre survives? Even if it does survive you’d enter from Hollywood Blvd so you really wouldn’t be in the backlot. Odd way they phrased that.

My question is how do they transition from Hollywood into Avatar?

Could they go a bit meta? Fill in the gaps of the street, facade of a movie theatre? "Now presenting: Avatar", and you enter the "movie"? Hide the land completely, until, you enter into it?

Or is it just there... off the streets of Hollywood?

I could see it going either way. The fact the land is right off Hollywood Blvd the former might be too hard to resist.

You may be on to something with the "Now Presenting" idea.

Maybe this will be an enclosed space that exists as an off-shoot of Hollywood land.

You "enter the movie" and the enclosed space is part of the experience along with a boat ride inside.

I'm thinking along the lines of the Mexico pavilion at Epcot. It's not its own "land" - it exists within the "land" of World Showcase, but it's an enclosed space with an attraction inside.

I love California Adventure more than most, and this is all cool news. Between this, the Coco ride, and the two Avengers rides, I think DCA will be one of the greatest parks in the world.

My biggest fear is losing Award Weiners. I’m going there next week and really craving an award weiner right now for some reason.

We aren’t getting a dark ride at DHS though…. Sadly. I think the monsters ride at DCA is quite good - way better than mermaid.
Would you really rather a dark ride over the awesome door coaster plan?

I think based on the concept art, it will be an outdoor setting, but maybe enclosed like Super Nintendo World, to ensure it's fully immersive.

So perhaps they extend the facade (yellow), you can keep Fairfax Market, Schmoozies, but basically close off the current entrances to the backlot with a Hollywood facade.

Build a new exit for Philharmagic, that comes back out directly onto the street (pink arrow). Green arrows possible entrance and or exits for Avatar, through the wall?

ETA:

Think Epic Universe portal into World of Avatar type thing?

Thanks - I did know it will be outdoors but meant something enclosed like Super Nintendo World like you mentioned!

Yes, I think this is a pretty plausible scenario. In this layout I could see the whole area being designated as an "attraction" within Hollywood Land (Now Presenting/step-into-the-movie), which could be why they won't refer to Avatar as its own Land.

I may be in the minority but I think DCA is better off with this mini land and boat ride (hopefully still using Shanghai Pirates system) than keeping the aged Monsters dark ride and adding the door coaster.

Interesting. They’ve never actually referred to it as a land have they?

I would have preferred they kept Monsters Inc but restart from scratch and overhaul that section of improved Los Angeles/Hollywood area. But that just me.
