We should have HE, so was thinking of trying to book it right to BATB and ride first thing.

Yes go for it and get an early slot. We did the fantasyland classics before doing it with DPA (having it booked when we entered the park) at 9:30 and had 2 other reservations for later in the day (one more DPA after using the first and the vacation package one)
