Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

Yeah, Wicked Part One and Moana 2 ran virtually unopposed for much of last December, when the only wide releases were Kraven the Hunter and that Lord of the Rings ashcan-copy anime. There were a lot more "big" movies this time around, even Universal brought out Five Nights at Freddy's 2 after...

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

There aren't any other wide/non-specialty releases this weekend, and it also works as counterprogramming to the more family-forward Zootopia 2 and Wicked: For Good. Keep in mind 2023 and 2024 had no post-Thanksgiving weekend non-specialty titles (as opposed to stuff like Beyonce's concert film...

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

That's no longer an issue; the original Baum Oz novels (and some of the post-Baum books) have been public domain for quite a while now. The problem is that adaptations always run up against the fact that the version most people are familiar with is the 1939 film; unless they're distinctly...

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

This seems like a silly worry. Disney regularly releases a big-ticket family movie over Thanksgiving and a (usually) more "mature" production over Christmas -- Moana didn't suffer for Rogue One coming out just a month later, nor did Frozen II which was separated from The Rise of Skywalker by a...

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

Things were doing pretty well through mid-July, and then just cratered. A few horror and anime titles have genuinely thrived, but there haven't been any 4-quadrant / fun-for-the-whole-family blockbusters from August to now. At least last year had stuff like Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and The Wild...

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

Yes, and that's good for everyone really. Wicked: For Good has the teen and adult women markets almost to itself in what has been a very thin year for movies appealing to those demographics in particular, and Zootopia 2 gets the general toddlers-to-grandparents crowd through the door. If the...

Yeah, Target definitely went in hard on the Wicked outfits this year, wouldn't be surprised if they overstocked - though there was a goodly dent made in the stock of those in my region in the runup to the holiday. I wasn't handling the trick-or-treaters this year, but last year there were...

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

Yeah Zootopia has long been a case of "Why isn't this property being pushed more?" compared to Moana, which wasn't as big a hit at the time (though the latter was released at a considerably more competitive time of year). While I doubt the sequel will be as successful in China, given the sea...

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

An important thing to note here is that the K-Pop Demon Hunters costumes are not licensed ones, but homemade/assembled -- nobody knew how big that was going to be so no official gear was ready to go. I was seeing cosplayers for that at a convention in Chicagoland in August. Next year though...

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

I checked Regal today and the current first banner ad up was for Roofman! (Tron: Ares is two clicks over.) Cinemark still shows me Wicked: For Good first. But yes, today (presumably since it's now playing) Tron: Ares has pride of place over at AMC. It still seems weird that the chains weren't...

    Hexed (WDAS - 2026)

I think the sourness of late is more that they haven't produced a good musical since Encanto (between Disenchanted, Wish, Mufasa the Lion King, Moana 2, and the Snow White and Little Mermaid remakes).

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

I checked the websites of the 3 big U.S. theater chains (AMC, Cinemark, Regal) tonight and their homepages' banners are busy hyping up...presales and merchandise previews for Wicked: For Good. It's not that they aren't offering popcorn tins, etc. for Tron: Ares but they're not being placed...

    Hexed (WDAS - 2026)

Unfortunately, that would put it directly against Sunrise on the Reaping (the second prequel to The Hunger Games), another fantasy movie with the youth market in mind, if skewing older than Hexed. Keeping in mind that The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes doing better than expected in its second...

    Hexed (WDAS - 2026)

I'm surprised I didn't mention this earlier, but the Thanksgiving '26 release date also puts it directly against...Greta Gerwig's adaptation of The Magician's Nephew. Which is about youths who are transported to magical land(s). Hope Disney wasn't hoping for IMAX screens!

    Hexed (WDAS - 2026)

Looking around Bluesky, it's pretty sad that the response to this announcement is mostly about whether or not this is knocking off The Owl House or not. If the movie's only a year and change away, there should have been a lot more to the reveal than just that logline and one piece of concept art...
