    Hexed (WDAS - 2026)

Unfortunately, that would put it directly against Sunrise on the Reaping (the second prequel to The Hunger Games), another fantasy movie with the youth market in mind, if skewing older than Hexed. Keeping in mind that The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes doing better than expected in its second...

    Hexed (WDAS - 2026)

I'm surprised I didn't mention this earlier, but the Thanksgiving '26 release date also puts it directly against...Greta Gerwig's adaptation of The Magician's Nephew. Which is about youths who are transported to magical land(s). Hope Disney wasn't hoping for IMAX screens!

    Hexed (WDAS - 2026)

Looking around Bluesky, it's pretty sad that the response to this announcement is mostly about whether or not this is knocking off The Owl House or not. If the movie's only a year and change away, there should have been a lot more to the reveal than just that logline and one piece of concept art...

    Hexed (WDAS - 2026)

I think The A.V. Club put the issue with this announcement best: "We're sure Hexed has more to offer beyond its basic "awkward kid with a Type-A mom finds out he's magic" logline because… it has to, right?" If they want people to be excited about the project and not just notice all the stuff it...

    Hexed (WDAS - 2026)

I'm not impressed; the premise sounds like they're stripping stuff like The Owl House, Onward, Turning Red, and Elio for parts. (Very heteronormative, male-skewing parts at that.) It's hard to believe this was the best they could come up with for what's going to be the last original WDFAS film...

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

News coming in from the weekend now has the total take of Elio so far at $96 million ($55 million in the U.S., $41 million internationally). So it will cross the $100 million mark at least, but it's still lagging far behind pretty much every would-be Disney tentpole released since Haunted...

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

It's not the whole problem, but Pixar actually becoming Must/Only Stream TV thanks to the run of films sent to Disney+ is part of it...

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

Checking up over at Deadline, the toll for Elio in the U.S. is looking to be $55 million after 3 weeks. The word of mouth never kicked in on this one. In the U.S. Elio can at least claim it will probably outgross Wish, but the international take has been much, much poorer than that film's...

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

It's possible, but I think there's less audience overlap between Wicked: For Good and Zootopia 2 than there was with Wicked: Part One and Moana 2 last year, and those two movies both did great business. So both these sequels can be big hits, and hopefully the rising tide that lifts all boats...

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

I would like to see The Phoenician Scheme right now - support original cinema and all - but there isn't a theater in my region showing it. The saturation booking of blockbusters by the big studios makes it difficult for smaller movies to get a toehold in these parts unless they're "faith-based"...

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

I get what they were trying for with the TikTok clip, but shouldn't they have done that before the movie hit theaters? It's a week late! But also, it reminds me of the person who worked on Wish being an apologist for it on Reddit claiming, among other things, that they were out to do a simple...

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

WB has been shaping up of late when it comes to promoting their movies. They have a hand in F1 right now, and that's paying off already. And if Jurassic World: Rebirth turns out not to be a barn-burner, that opens up a route for Superman to make it big. This is a valid point. It'll likely have...

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

Given early word on Jurassic World: Rebirth has been sour (this past week it turned up as a one-off Mystery Movie screening at some Regal theaters, which is not typical for a tentpole picture, and those who saw it don't seem impressed) this might happen! Actually, Universal hasn't pushed it as...

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

Well, it was supposed to be a March 2024 release! Looking around elsewhere online for commentary on this situation, I think some families thought Elio came out a while ago because the original November 2023 teaser hung around for quite a while, since the ridiculous amount of trailers most big...

    Elio (Pixar - June 2025)

Given that the massive layoffs at Pixar last year were largely due to getting out of the streaming business, and the Princess and the Frog series got the shaft, an Elio series seems really unlikely. And at this point, I don't think pinning hopes on streaming as the cure-all for poor box office...

    Elio (Pixar - June 2025)

I don't think any of those factors are going to help make it a success. Nobody really cares about corporate anniversary markers or "Xth movie" milestones - they certainly didn't when it came to Wish! And just being about animals and opening at the same time another movie about animals did...

    Elio (Pixar - June 2025)

It doesn't help that Disney has to move on to promoting Fantastic Four: First Steps since that has a lot more riding on its success as the last MCU movie until Avengers: Doomsday next Christmas. And word-of-mouth will probably not help Elio's prospects the way it did for Elemental because...

    Elio (Pixar - June 2025)

I really do wonder what went wrong here. Anybody who saw Moana 2 or the Lilo & Stitch remake had to have seen the trailers, to say nothing of the other kids' movies they went out with, but they didn't pique audiences' interest enough to make the film a must-see out of the gate. I keep thinking...

SPOILERS: Snow White live action (March 21, 2025 release)

I honestly wonder if this film might have done better theatrically if it had been released before Wicked Part One.

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

Yeah, between the B Cinemascore (though it's been pointed out elsewhere that horror movies tend not to get to A-ish Cinemascores; it's a demanding crowd!) and word on the street, the responses to 28 Years Later are quite polarized - some viewers love it, some hate it. And yeah, the genre tends...
