News Guest dies, found unresponsive after riding Stardust Racers

Yeah, I saw an initial reports of a large piece of metal but entirely possible that was just a TikToker looking for views, something used by the rescue crew, etc. Not ruling it out but I think it's based entirely on one person's report at this point.

I don't think that scenario is super likely but I could see it if the piece of metal was attached to his specific car.

News Guest dies, found unresponsive after riding Stardust Racers

I kinda doubt that. There have to have been plenty of very drunk riders on coasters over the years. I feel like there's often an unstated assumption here that because this ride is similar to other rides, that means it's essentially the same. Of course that's not the case though - a variance...

News Guest dies, found unresponsive after riding Stardust Racers

Yes, I've tried to be careful to say 'if' such and such happened. Obviously if this poor man was hit in the head with a piece of flying metal that has nothing to do with lap vs. shoulder restraints.

News Guest dies, found unresponsive after riding Stardust Racers

If (again, if) this man was killed because he had unusually low muscle tone and / or muscle atrophy that allowed him a greater range of motion at the waist than most people, or lower muscle tone when unconscious - I still think it would be hard to rule out the same situation with an extremely...

News Guest dies, found unresponsive after riding Stardust Racers

I haven't seen anything objective, just opinion pieces. To be fair it would be a difficult area to study. My thought is this - the baseline condition of any roller coaster should be safety, obviously. Under multiple test conditions with test dummies, we should see that the specific velocity...

News Guest dies, found unresponsive after riding Stardust Racers

If they’re safe for a given coaster that’s great. I’m not a coaster person but I certainly want enthusiasts to have the best ride that is (safely) possible.

News Guest dies, found unresponsive after riding Stardust Racers

As I’ve said, if that’s the case - that the restraints were not the issue - then sure, don’t fix something that isn’t broken. If this was due to this rider’s upper body being unsecured, however, then a lap restraint wasn’t sufficient.

News Guest dies, found unresponsive after riding Stardust Racers

Yes after getting acquainted with this topic briefly through search there seems to be a feeling that the “vests” are either safest, or most commonly used for the most intense rides.

Again though, source on the safety of lap vs shoulder restraints?

News Guest dies, found unresponsive after riding Stardust Racers

I don’t see the issue here. Are you really saying that if the problem is the restraint system - when paired with this particular coaster - then that’s ok as long as someone only dies every once in awhile? No one is saying to make changes if the restraint system is not the issue. If it is, then...

News Guest dies, found unresponsive after riding Stardust Racers

Yeah, definitely true. My hunch (just a hunch) is that this coaster was tested with something like crash test dummies, who may have a different physiological profile than someone who is partially paralyzed and likely experienced significant muscle atrophy. I believe a certain amount of rigidity...

News Guest dies, found unresponsive after riding Stardust Racers

I realize they aren't entirely comparable, but if someone just died from blunt force injuries from having his upper torso slammed around, they might be comparable enough. (I realize that's not a delicate way to say it, but I say it to highlight the seriousness of what happened, not to be...

News Guest dies, found unresponsive after riding Stardust Racers

Again, do you have a source? This is completely opposite of what they tell you in a car, where lap belts have not been used for a long time.

News Guest dies, found unresponsive after riding Stardust Racers

What is your source on this? Honestly I am quite skeptical of this idea. It would be like lap belts somehow being safer than carseat harnesses, it just doesn't make a lot of sense to me. I did a quick search and I see references to comfort, ride experience, body shapes, etc., but I didn't see...
