I've never checked-in late at the Contemporary, but we've arrived after 10PM at several other resorts without a problem. They do the room assignments 3 days (I think it is 3, maybe 4) ahead of time, and it is not based on check-in time.

I've never been a character, but I bet it get's pretty annoying to constantly be asked, "Is it hot in there?" Not only is the answer fairly obvious, it also takes away from the experience of kids that may be around.
