Your faith in “most” and “of late” is stronger than mine.

I’m sure there are several posters in the last week that are only focused on vaccine and not reduction of community spread.

I’ll agree, there are many that understand, and a bunch that understand but have been interpreted not to.

Focus has turned to vaccines because it may be the best tool now to get community spread down, knowing where it is and what else is likely to change. The two are necessarily intertwined for America at this point.

Yes, we're probably long past reducing community spread without a vaccine now. Or, the effort required would be monumental because of current conditions if we didn’t have a vaccine.

But, that’s still not the same as thinking vaccine availability anytime in 2021 is going to be a reason on its own for any action. No different than if we ramped up N95 masks and delivered a free one to every person everyday. They’re just tools to reduce spread. Tools with limitations and gaps in coverage. The more tools we can leverage, the better. The goal is still reduced community spread. That’s when mitigations start to disappear. Hopefully reduced enough that lack of mitigations doesn’t increase spread because there is so little out there.

I guess I’m just curious, were any international visitors even coming? Or did some think they could still come by the summer?

I think you are greatly minimizing the importance of the vaccine.

You seem to be saying if we just all wore masks in the first place, the vaccine wouldn't have been needed.
Of course masks reduce transmission and it could have worked better had everyone been on board....but the vaccine is the goal.
The vaccine is what we need to get back to normality, masks wouldn't get us there.

While masks can reduce spread, the vaccine may possibly stop one from even becoming infected at best and reduce severity of illness and symptoms at least.

So I do think vaccine availability in 2021 will play a very important role.

Based on where we are today, the vaccine is absolutely necessary, no doubt.

It’s not enough. Just having it available to everyone 18+ years old is not enough.

This isn’t minimizing it. Having a vaccine at all after a year is tremendous. It’ll be a much stronger tool than all the others. Orders of magnitude better. But, just having it available is not enough.

The vaccine needs to be used enough to reduce spread. That’s still the measure, are we controlling spread. If we’re not able to use enough doses for whatever reason, it’s not going to matter.

Based on size and understanding of spread, the tools that work are different. What might have worked in March, April, August, December are all different. At least initially, COVID is likely going to need lots of tools besides the vaccine, even with the vaccine doing most of the heavy lifting. Eventually, it’ll probably be more like the measles, where babies get vaccinated and we mostly just ignore it in the US. Between now and then, we’re going to pass through different stages, and need to leverage different tools beyond just vaccine availability. That’s the point. Vaccine availability isn’t a silver bullet. It’s a great start, but not the end.

I'm surprised it wasn't rescinded in the first batch of Executive Orders.

Perhaps, unlike the previous administration, they're taking the time for the lawyers to draft and go over the EOs so that they're not immediately struck down by a court.

Also 38 US Capitol police officers now have tested positive for Covid defending the Capitol against mostly maskless invaders. That controversial attitude of my freedom my face surely got those brave law enforcement personnel infected with Covid when they came in close direct contact with those maskless thugs.

I would like to know why travel to Mexico is allowed. According to this article it is suppose to be essential travel. I know someone who took a 2 week vacation in Cancun. So travel to Mexico is ok but nowhere else?

That is a question that one should ask the President of Mexico. Mexico has been open for travelers including US citizens ( business, essential and leisure ) for at least a few months . That is no secret. If our country can step up and restrict our citizens and non citizens who live here in the USA to not travel there, that is another story. But then again it is that attitude of a few ... " My freedom , my face .... " putting their freedom first and possibly jepaordizing their lives and lives of others.
