"Federal health officials issued new guidance on Wednesday that greatly expands the pool of people considered at risk for covid-19 by changing the definition of who is a “close contact” of an infected individual.

The change by The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is likely to have its biggest impact in schools, workplaces and other group settings where people are in contact with others for long periods of time. It also underscores the importance of mask-wearing to prevent spread of the virus.

The CDC had previously defined a “close contact” as someone who spent at least 15 consecutive minutes within six feet of a confirmed covid-19 case. The updated guidance, which health departments rely on to conduct contact tracing, now defines a close contact as someone who was within six feet of an infected individual for a total of 15 minutes or more over a 24-hour period, according to a CDC statement Wednesday.

The updated guidance is based on new evidence about transmission of the coronavirus, which causes covid-19. In a report published Wednesday, CDC and Vermont health officials discovered the virus was spread to a 20-year-old prison employee who interacted with individuals who later tested positive for the virus after 22 interactions with them totaling 17 minutes during an eight-hour shift.

“Available data suggests that at least one of the asymptomatic [infectious detainees] transmitted” the virus during these brief encounters, the report said.

The prison employee wore a cloth mask, gown and eye protection during all of the interactions. The infected individuals wore masks during most of their interactions with him, but not during several that took place in a cell doorway or prison recreation room, the report said.

“This article adds to the scientific knowledge of the risk to contacts of those with covid-19 and highlights again the importance of wearing face masks to prevent transmission,” the CDC said in a statement."

While I understand the reasoning behind Disney's refusal to depict its characters wearing masks, doing so in advertising/social media would do so much good. Of course, it would probably backfire and incite boycotts from "certain circles". On second thought, the last thing we need is added harm.
Interesting point. Me, Myself and I see no issue with face characters wearing masks. It would be in the category of setting, heaven forbid, an example.

So.... You’re saying masks and social distancing are important? So people should probably still be home and not mandated back to crazy crowded situations or office settings and that children should probably still be learning from home? Just getting it straight LOL… You know kind of like all the doctors and scientists have been saying all along

So much for just changing seats every 14 minutes.

From the FDOH -

"Of the 95 fatalities reported to the state on October 21, 2020, 16 had at least a two-month separation between the time the individuals tested positive and passed away, and 11 of the fatalities occurred more than a month ago

Tallahassee, Fla. – Today, Florida's Surgeon General, Dr. Scott A. Rivkees, announced the Department of Health will conduct a more thorough review of all fatalities reported to the state.

Fatality data reported to the state consistently presents confusion and warrants a more rigorous review. Of the 95 fatalities reported to the state yesterday, 16 had more than a two-month separation between the time the individuals tested positive and passed away, and 11 of the deaths occurred more than a month ago.

Florida Surgeon General Scott Rivkees said, "During a pandemic, the public must be able to rely on accurate public health data to make informed decisions. To ensure the accuracy of COVID-19 related deaths, the Department will be performing additional reviews of all deaths. Timely and accurate data remains a top priority of the Department of Health.”

Of the 95 fatalities reported to the Florida Department of Health today:

11 were over 30 days old;
16 had at least two months between the time the individuals tested positive and passed away; and
5 had at least three months between the time the individuals tested positive and passed away."

Yeah it seems like this is the reason why no numbers today.

The state is taking a look at how deaths are being reported. Seems like they are saying there is too long of a lag.

so lets see.......

The vast majority of business interruption insurance does not cover COVID, a pandemic, or any other broad based interruption. The few insurance companies who didn't have specific language in their policies before do now, and they're all fighting claims based on the general language they previously had. Insurance is not covering profits, costs or anything else for shutdowns that are the result of COVID restrictions.

The "safe and effective" description is definitely doing a lot of work in the survey. It shouldn't really have to, but in the current state we've broken the CDC and are trying not to break the FDA too. Neither organization is supposed to be political is the point. With both of them suffering from more direct political message shaping and pressure to make decisions for political reasons.

That's the trust that needs to be there. If a vaccine was released tomorrow, the very first question will be "Can I trust the organization that approved it? Is the approval because the normal process has proven out that it's safer than the alternative or was it approved because of political messaging independent from the analysis?"

We can go back through the pages of this thread to see how the CDC has been broken with it's messaging and loss of trust. Let's hope we don't break the FDA too.
The FDA is already broken and has been for a long time. It is filled with people that are human, just like the CDC, and these humans have many biases and political or pharm ties. Now, that doesn't mean that they are a terrible organization but there are flaws and there have been for many years. Just take the revolving door of people who work in pharma and go to the FDA and then back to pharma.

With all that being said, overall the FDA does get a lot right but as US citizens we should demand better. Even peer-reviewed research isn't without its challenges.

With all that being said this is why it is important for any public health information being given by the CDC and any vaccine approvals by the FDA to come with clear and concise messaging that is consistent.

Didn't see that coming /s
Congratulations?

As it says in the article, this seems to be based on an agreement with the teachers' union and he'd already been sued for not doing it sooner. I'd want to see evidence of a sizable number of cases in the schools along with in-school transmission before shutting it down.

School spread is happening. The school tracing hasn't been widespread so the false idea of schools being safe is being pushed.

"Florida’s health department on Wednesday missed its target of releasing fresh data on the coronavirus pandemic by 11 a.m., which it aims to do every day. As of 4 p.m., the state statistics on COVID-19 cases, deaths and testing for the day still were not publicly available."

"The South Florida Sun Sentinel reached out to the state Department of Health but has not yet heard back with an answer about today’s situation."
