Using park tickets before checking in a resort

Our trek to WDW is a 12 hour drive. We drive all day just stay off site that night to save a few bucks before entering the World early the next morning.

This time, I went ahead and got an extra day of park tickets because it was only a few bucks more. I figured we could just go to AK when we get to town and knock out some fast passes.

The question is what is the best way to activate our park tickets if we aren't checking in until the next day? The last time, we didn't check in at the resort the morning before we went to MK, and we had to go to guest relations.

How does it work for those who stay off site?

If you buy your tickets separately, not as part of a package, I think you only have to link them to your MDE account and you're good to go. Do you normally get a package for your onsite stay? If so, price out a room only stay, with the tickets separately, it may be cheaper even with discounts.

You could go to Disney Springs the night before. Probably the quickest and easiest way.
