Does anyone know if the Magic Band will work at the resort gate on the day of arrival, prior to getting a room assigned?

It should, but be prepared for it not to. I've had just about every possible configuration of stuff working or not working with the Magic Bands, and now I just expect things to NOT work at first.

If you check in, they should be able to give you access to everything even if your room is not ready. They used to do it via temporary access card, but I believe it's all linked to your MB now. Once your room is ready, you may not even need to go back to guest services.

At least when I went and had this issue, the answer was no. You had to check in prior to going to the parks. A trip to Guest Services fixes the issue I believe. I can't quite remember, but I had to talk to Guest Services prior to entry.

This is incorrect. It is absolutely NOT supposed to. The OP asked about the resort gate. When you arrive at the resort gate, you're supposed to go to the left kiosk and talk to the security guard and tell him you're checking in. You can only use the band to open the gate after check-in. That's not something "not working," that's exactly how it's designed.

OP, people are answering questions you didn't ask. No, the band will not work at the gate and it's not supposed to. You talk to the guard, he'll let you in. Then you go to the front desk and get yourself sorted out. Then the band will work for everything.

This exactly.
On our most recent trip (November), we checked in very early and our room was not ready. We used our MB to get into Magic Kingdom and used dining plan credits before going to our room later that evening.

On the day of arrival the Magic Band will not work at the resort gate until after you have used it to access your room, if you have on line check in, so I would assume it also will not work if your room is not assigned.

I'm pretty sure my opening words were "If you check in".

I understand that. The OP asked about the resort gate on the day of arrival. You have to go through the resort gate before you check in so "if you check in" doesn't apply.

It applies just fine after you check in. I implied not before you check in by saying "If you check in". :)

Ours worked a few weeks ago before we had our room assigned. But then again, IDK if that had anything to do with us doing online check in prior to arriving or not.

Wouldn't it be nice, if somewhere on Disney's FAQ, answers to questions like this were readily available, especially so you don't have to go through the Mom's Panel?

Add to this the question "will I or will I not get a parking permit for my windshield?" when first arriving at your resort and showing your ID to the guard. I've had both occur...

They will work before you check in. Remember though that even if you go to a park even for a few minutes you have used a day of your tickets. We typically stay offsite somewhere using motel reward points or a less expensive motel and hit the park early on our first day. We like to get the most out of every day on our tickets! We will go ahead and park at our motel (they will let you in if you have reservations) and catch the Disney bus to the park of our choice. If you go ahead and go by the registration desk and check in they will send a text to you later in the day when your room is ready. You can then go directly to your room when you come back to the motel.
