Lion-tailed Macaques Debut at Maharajah Jungle Trek

Orlando Park News is the first to report that the Lion-tailed Macaques have debuted at the Maharajah Jungle Trek. There are three females and one male in the exhibit that was originally home to the Malayan Tapir.

The news that these animals were arriving at Disney's Animal Kingdom was reported back in March by JamboEveryone.com and then Tom Corless broke the same story six months later (dynamite job by Tom).

Another excellent site, (WDWThemeParks.com) also posted photos of the new Maharajah Jungle Trek sign with the macaques which debuted back in September.

Will Disney ever add anything other than small monkeys to DAK's animal lineup? I don't need to see 6 different species of monkeys in my day at the park. Brookfield Zoo in Chicago had a really nice wolf exhibit. We still don't have any bears or pandas. You've got a handful of empty exhibits in the Oasis. Come on Disney!

I love me some monkeys, lol, but I agree. Although they've added dogs to the safari.

Pandas will probably never happen unless China's policy changes or Disney can do some massive convincing, but it doesn't sound like it's worth the effort. I'd love some Pandas.

Bears ... eh

Bears are actually pretty difficult to get. The Toledo Zoo now has 3 (1 Kodiak and 2 grizzlies), but they were only able to obtain them after tragic circumstances. The two grizzlies (Montana and Cody) were orphaned with their mother fatally attacked a man in Yellowstone, and was euthanized. Since the cubs couldn't survive on their own in the wild, and because the Toledo Zoo had space for them, the cubs were sent to Ohio. In the case of the Kodiak bear (named Dodge), it's mother was illegally shot in Alaska. It's siblings were taken to another zoo, and the Toledo Zoo was able to take Dodge. Apparently there's a waiting list for American bears, so it's pretty remarkable that the zoo was able to get three of them (they also have Polar Bears and a Sloth Bear).

Is there any way for Disney to strike a deal with Shanghai for a couple of pandas? Their Adventureland is a little different than WDW's, but could probably have a mini-Animal Kingdom safari if they wanted.

Didn't realize that Bears were so difficult to obtain. I mean, go out in the woods, leave some food out and wait if you want to see a bear ;)

But I think Disney could go a long way in educating guests on the various types of bears. I just don't see where they'd fit in at the park if they did.

What the Toledo Zoo (I'm sorry for repeatedly talking about it, but I love this zoo) is planning to do is to eventually have a North American animal area, including bison, pronghorns, and coyote (the bears are in another part of the zoo). I know that a North America land may feel a little out of place, especially next to Asia and Africa, but there are a ton of animals that they could feature, including seals, polar bears, wolves, foxes, etc. Unfortunately, I don't see Disney doing something like this until a South America or Australia land is created.

Giant Pandas might be difficult, but I would think Red Pandas (which I find to be much more entertaining and adorable than Giant Panda's anyways) would be slightly easier. I wonder if a Sloth Bear would be any easier to add to Animal Kingdom? They have a couple at the National Zoo and they are quite interesting to watch... plus, the Jungle Book's Baloo is supposed to be a sloth bear, so it makes sense that they would/shoud have some...

I imagine climate has a great deal to do with why you don't see these larger animals at DAK. It's why much of the animal exhibits are African-themed.

For those asking about pandas, there hasn't been much info on this but I did have a conversation with Joe Rohde about it back in 2013. That's really been the only public information about this that I've found.

I'd like to see Pandas, but I just had to say that as long as I got to have a conversation with Joe Rohde, it wouldn't matter beyond that. How did you get to have a conversation with him? I'd probably be a blithering idiot-he's such an idol of mine.

There was a meet and greet with Rohde, mangum, Fitzgerald, Jacobson, Vaughn and Lau.

India has got bears. Wolves too.

I learned everything I know about India's wildlife from the Jungle Book.

Both would make for a great addition to DAK's animal line-up.

But Jambo (great site!) in the link didn't break the news what species were moving in, merely guessdeducted that the exhibit was being prepared for primates or a leopard.

I don't think pandas will come to any other zoo in the US. Our local zoo tried to get them several years ago and got the run around from China. They gave a bunch of money as a "donation" to China for panda conservation and played their games. In the end China wanted the zoo to get into politics and "talk" to our congressmen and have do whatever it was they were asking. So they are using pandas as a political leverage. Our zoo refused to do that saying they are about the animals. I can't say that I am surprised that they are using those amazing animals for their own political gain. Shame on them.

That's disappointing but I can't say that really surprises me China would take that stance.
