What part of the resort is the best area to stay in? Close to monorail? Boat lanch? are there items from Mary Poppins throughout the resort? Thinking about going after Thanksgiving

No idea - I wanted a MK view when we stayed there in 2009 but it was out of our price bracket

Both the main building as well as Sago Cay, Conch Key, Big Pine Key and Boca Chica have theme park view rooms. If you cannot afford that room category, Big Pine Key has most of the garden view rooms that are closest to the monorail. Garden rooms in Conch Key are closest to the boat dock.
But the entire GF resort is not very large and you can get about anywhere (transportation, pools, food) in under 5 minutes.
There is a Mary Poppins topiary, but theming from Alice in Wonderland (kids splash area) is more prevalent at the main resort. I know there are penguins in the lobby of the GF DVC Villas building.

You really can't go wrong anywhere. It has the "Grand" feel of being large, but is actually fairly compact, and the walk from anywhere to the main building (dining, monorail) isn't terrible at all.
Magic Kingdom views are lovely. If you can swing main building, it's breathtaking- but it's great anywhere.
We stayed Sago Cay last time and it was a bit more quiet, and a very short walk to Gasparilla for food and mug refills. From there, it was also easier to take the "short cut" between the main building and convention center for the buses.
Most recently, we were in an "outer building- Deluxe room". These are the rooms in the turrets, facing into the resort (garden view). There are only a few per building, but it gives just a bit of extra space in the bump-out. This was really nice with 2 adults and 2 teenagers (and a 2 year old). It has a little sitting area with a couch, chair, and 2nd TV where the balcony normally is, and then a balcony coming out the side. I believe that these rooms on the top floor do not have balconies.
We've been in other buildings as well, and I haven't found a bad location.

Here are those deluxe rooms. They're less than MK view, and the extra space was great!
They do only sleep 4 though (plus one under 3). For whatever reason, they didn't make that couch a sleeper sofa. So they have more room, but can't accommodate the 5th person like the other rooms.
