Normally when I go to a theme park I don't bring anything with me and just let my husband carry my drivers license in his wallet but my 9 yr old son has a autograph book and a really big pen for our 1st time to Disney, so I have a little nylon backpack. ( It was free from ToysRUs) I'm going to take that to the parks.
Our theme park usually won't let you take a bag on the ride but they have cubbies to put your items in, and for the rides that don't have cubbies, you can take it on the ride.
How does Disney do the whole bag thing?

You can take your bag on all Disney rides. For the more intense ones that need it, there are little cubby sacks in your seat that you can stick it in. To be safe, I just stick my foot through the strap as well. I've never had any issues with it. :)

Yep. I took my drawstring bag on every single ride at Disney. About the only ones where I even took extra precautions for it were Tower of Terror (put my leg through the strap), Rockin' Rollercoaster (used the net in the front of the car), Expedition Everest (net), Big Thunder Mountain (net), Space Mountain (put the strap around the t-bar, since the bag didn't fit in the net on that one), and Kali River Rapids (used the compartment in the center of the raft to keep everything dry).

Ok, thanks for letting me know. I know some theme parks want you to buy a locker. Kinda pointless to have a bag if you have to store it.

We did rent a locker on our last day, but it was only to store something we had bought earlier that day at Epcot that we didn't want to risk breaking on a ride at MK. Disney also holds bags for guests for the same price as a locker fee if you bring something that won't fit in a locker for some reason. But yeah, if it's just a bag and it has stuff in it that you'll want to access during the day, there's no point in getting a locker.

I wish it weren't so common, but unfortunately, people bring bags and bags of stuff. Sure, some is needed, but it's out of control. Ever wait behind a family with 3-4 backpacks, a purse, and 2 camera bags? I even saw someone bring a roller luggage thing.

A backpack such as the one you're bringing will not be a problem in the least and many should follow your lead.

Really?!? I believe you and all, but wow... lol! I couldn't imagine carrying all that crap around the parks for a whole day. We stayed out 10-12 hours a day each day of our trip... that's a lot to keep up with for 12 hours. My rule was that if it didn't fit in my sling bag, I didn't need it. I had sunblock, two ponchos, our wallets, our phones, a small pouch with some makeup essentials and a portable phone charger. And two protein bars. That's it.

I used a backpack the last time I went. I took it on the rides and had no issues. For the rides that I went on and my Mom didn't, I left my backpack with her. We used a locker for our items at Animal Kingdom when we went on the Kali River Rapids :).

oh, for the good old days when a small little pack would hold what you needed, didn't need it's own little compartment on rides and wasn't in the way.
alas, my daughter has threatened my life if she ever sees it on me again!

Hah! I have something like that, and I sometimes wear it when I run (it's not bulky like the older ones... it's super light, small, and stretchy and doesn't bounce) but I didn't want to be wearing it in all of those picture we took! Plus, it wouldn't have held enough for our needs.

I bring in a small backpack that holds my wallet, phone, camera, some ponchos, sunscreen and a pocket for a water bottle. I have seen people bring in rolling coolers, several of those reusable grocery bags full of food, huge stuffed backpacks and if they have a stroller, that is crammed with stuff. I can only imagine what is still in their hotel room.... Nothing is more annoying than being in line behind these folks at bag check. And imagine how sore their back, shoulders, etc., will be in a few hours carting all this unneeded junk around as you walk 10 miles in the Orlando summer heat.

Oh trust me. They had it draped all over their strollers and dad had 2 packbacks - one on each shoulder. I see it all the time.

I tried to stick to a bum bag ( pack) for most of the trip and it worked! Just on the final few days, I had souvenirs to buy so I bought a drawstring bag.
You can take them on all rides, even RnRC, which has to be the most terrifying thing ever, to watch your bag go upside down...! I had my camera in mine on of the days, a big DSLR. I was sure it was going to fall out, I even grabbed onto the straps mid loop (it was in the pocket), but it stayed put. I was quite amazed.
Universal on the other hand is a whole other ball game. Don't even get me started on the mess that is the locker room for the Forbidden Journey. If ever there was poor planning, that's the bad boy right there.

Not really. We take a lot of stuff with us, but we don't necessarily want to carry it around. Camera tripod (use it at night), wet weather gear for cloudbursts, sweaters for when it suddenly gets cold (we go in December) and assorted other stuff which we may not use but is handy to have with you, but being on your feet all day walking, don't want the encumbrance of it.

I wish Disney would crack down on some of this stuff. Two years ago I ended up with a broken foot on our last day thanks to a tour group pulling big Igloo coolers. This trip we kept running into the same family at the buses. Every day they started off with three strollers...one stroller was just to hold the big igloo cooler and bags of food underneath. I am not hauling all that stuff. When we get thirsty it is free ice water for our family....with an iced tea or soda for lunch &/or dinner.

I'm always worried about a bag getting left behind (and I don't want to feel like a "pack mule" anyway), so all I bring is a small cross-body purse (one that fastens securely) with the essentials, which I can wear on every attraction. It holds my sunglasses, hand sanitizing wipes, Band-aids and ointment, Tylenol, ID/credit card/health insurance card, chapstick, my camera, my cell phone, and the 3x5 card with our itinerary. What more does a girl need? :)

Personally I'm an advocate of a Camelbak rucksack.
That way you have a insulated reservoir of water on you which keeps cold all day.

Personally I just feel better when I can take small sips of water very frequently rather than larger amounts less often.

See, that's another reason just getting ice water from qs as I needed it worked so well for me. As I got thirsty, I could walk up to any qs counter and ask for water. They'd give it to me and I'd sip on it until we got to our next attraction which was generally several minutes later. Then if we got in a line that didn't allow drinks, no big deal. I'd just take one last sip, throw it away, and get another free water when I needed it lol.

I can't drink much water at a time anyway so this worked nicely for me ;)
