Glad to finally see a response to Blackfish from SW

both sides should be heard- not just the activist's. I don't agree with orca captivity either, but to start with, there needs to be an end to breeding.
agree, because it would reach PETA levels of stupidity.

where they claim to "rescue animals" (aka for the show and public) and they end killing them because they do not have money nor space.. and thus they end keeping the animals's corpses in a freezer.

you have a hard job! When I was reading it all I could think of was "wow- this must have taken FOREVER!"

It is a lot of work and time consuming. My PhD research specialization is Program Evaluation. I would estimate a report like this given the in-depth facts and information took about 2 months to compile (if not sooner). Usually a report like this is done by one person or a team of people that is contracted outside to be brought in.

people tend to forget or disregard that. nearly ALL of the orcas have been born in captivity, they would die in the wild. what has happened to Tili is an atrocity, and it HAS been learned from.

I'm glad SeaWorld is standing up for themselves. It makes me mad that so many people are following Blackfish as 100% the truth and don't know all of the false info.

PS. It really seems like Samantha Berg is just bitter towards SeaWorld in general. Maybe she really does disagree with keeping captive killer whales but every time I see her in an interview (about Blackfish or not, even some before the documentary) she just seems shady and "fishy." She doesn't ever seem to be genuine. I wonder if she was fired or something.

I think the type of person who would put out a film adverstised as a truthful and telling documentary when in fact it is anything but is without a doubt shady. If one or two errors are discovered in your film then that is human error, but as many as listed here, that is called lying where I come from. Calling Sea World dishonest in a film where you yourself are being is just petty and attention seeking on her part.

I hope a shark take a bite out of her backside one day as karma...a small shark, not calling for a serious injury. Just something to remind her :)

Okey dokey. Tongue in cheek though this may be, now you are hoping for physical violence against someone with whom you disagree??? I'm just.....I mean......there really are no words. I disagree with most of you on this board on this subject but I'm not sitting around hoping that you get hit by a bus. I mean seriously.

LOL really, hoping she gets a small shark bite in her bum? Yeah that is so crazy of me......

"there really are no words" that is just too much....as if I called for her death by firing squad because I said she deserved a shark bite on her rump......I mean if you are going to use that comment for a silly post like I made what on Earth would you use if I really had wished harm on her....

it's people like you that take the fun out of humor, looking to get offended at every possible thing that you can o_O

And it's not that I disagree with her as if she is some other member on here, she was primarily responsible for a film that caused a great deal of harm to people, business and animals, a film that sure seems to me to be a load of lying intentional crap. How much revenue has her film cost Sea World? And how does Sea World pay to help animals both in captivity and in the wild? With their revenue from the parks among other things. Reduce their revenue, reduce their ability to pay for the help to those animals. So yeah a shark in the wild biting her in the bum might just be sweet justice :)

I take the fun out of humor? The New York Times, Variety, Time Out New York, Daily News, and other publications might just disagree with you on that one.

I make a silly statement about a shark bite of all things and you try and imply I have crossed some line of improper behavior? Even though you stated you knew it was a joke?

I have no ideal what you are talking about with the above, nor do I really care.

Let's end this now, we have nothing else to talk about and this thread is not about us anyways. Enjoy your night.

posted by SW on FB http://bit.ly/PUHiZI. I don't agree with Orca captivity either, but this movie was completely on sided. It was interesting to read.
Thanks for that link. Although it is not SEA's first attempt at a Blackfish rebuttal, but their 28873535nd. (zzzzzzz, snore)

But wow, this latest SEA 'rebuttal' may very well be their silliest yet. Are they getting that desperate? Well they would be, what with their fiftieth anniversary ruined by the biggest pr disaster in their history and attendance dropping by double digits!

I do hope this was all written by thirteen year olds, instead of by SEA. I don't even know where to begin pointing out the sheer risible nonsense of it all. Wait, I do! I'll just throw a dice and pick out a few random 'rebuttals'.

Blackfish:

Garret: “they have lifespans

very similar to human life

spans. The females can live

to about 100, maybe more –

males to about 50 or 60.”
'Rebuttal':

There is no scientific support for this assertion. The most recent study on life

expectancy of southern resident killer whales is that females live between 30 and 46

years and males 19 to 31 years.

Garret stated in an interview for the film Lolita: Slave to Entertainment that “in the

wild female [killer whales] average 50 years of age,” which is consistent with the

scientific evidence upon which SeaWorld bases its numbers.

Evidence:

1. Paper from the Canadian Science Advisory Secretariat; (See BF Index #4)

2. orcahome.de/lifeexpectancy.htm: “Researchers have determined an average life

expectancy for wild killer whales of about 30 years for males and 50 years for

females.”

3. Lolita Slave to Entertainment DVD Copyright 2003.

So Garret's claim that orcas can live up to about 100 for females or 60 for males is rebutted by stating their average lifespan? And they hope to embarrass Garret and his statement that orcas can live up to 100 by digging up some DVD where he states their average lifespan? Did these people ever go to school? Thank God Garret, the one quoted by Blackfish, does seem to know the difference!

And I shall forgive them for stating that the most recent study on life expectancy of the southern resident killer whales shows that 'females live between 30 and 46 and males 19 to 31 years', only to quote as their source a website that says 'wild killer whales' average life expectancy is 50 for females and 30 for males. Wait...I wont forgive them, afer all, their entire exercise is one to nitpick for factual inaccuracies, which makes them look all the dumber themselves yet. And apparantly they have never seen a scientific article if they link to a single activist's blog, who cites some books amidst his colourful pictures. For added giggles, it is an anti-captivity blog. These people did not even read their own sources, apparantly. Just adding them to sound impressive and learned and confuse the casual reader.

Bonus!
And now for the real laugh, do open that link of the study they quote. The laugh of the century. What does their quoted 'study' say? It says that Garret, and Blackfish, were totally correct in their assertion about orca lifespans. Namely, that orcas in the wild live much longer than in captivity, and that the deciding factor is likely the dismal quality of life in captivity. Because medical and nutritional care in captivity probably surpasses life in the wild one would expect orcas to live longer in captivity, not drastically shorter. This even more reinforces Blackfish's premise that orcas suffer greatly in captivity, to the point where they die from sheer grief and stress.

Of the 158 captive killer whales that have died, more than 2/3 didn’t make it passed 10 years in captivity. Less than 30 orcas survived more than 20 years in captivity.
[...]
in average orcas in captivity are still far away from reaching their natural life expectancies. This is quite astonishing if you consider the amount of medical treatment and observation put into those animals. It is difficult to prove but the quality of life might be the deciding factor in this puzzle.
