Trip Report Frozen No More: a live birthday TR *Completed*

What: A mother/daughter long weekend to celebrate a Valentine birthday
Who: Myself (Tuvalu) and Emily (@TrolleyFollower91)
Where: POP! (70s building, yeah!)
When: Feb. 13-17, 2014
Why: I have never posted a trip report but was inspired by @coachwnh and @disneysince71 to go live!

Until about six hours ago, when our plane actually departed, I wasn't sure this trip was actually gonna happen. We live in Atlanta, a place that is not equipped to handle winter storms. You may have seen photos from "Snowjam/Snowmaggedon" (as the locals called it) from a couple weeks ago, where thousands of commuters were trapped in their vehicles from 8-12 hours and schoolchildren had to spend the night in their schools since the buses were unable to transport them home. Emily's usual 15 minute ride home from the elementary school where she student teaches took her over 3 hours, including having to abandon her car and walk the remaining two miles home.

After that storm blew over (so to speak!) I remarked to Emily how fortunate we were that the storm didn't happen the day we were scheduled to fly to Orlando. She replied, "Don't worry, that won't happen again."

Until this week.

Monday the forecasters began predicting a "catastrophic" snow and ice storm (I hear all you northerners laughing!) The governor of GA declared a state of emergency through the weekend. Schools and businesses
were closed beginning Tuesday. We began to see our long-awaited trip drift away...

Our Wednesday flight was cancelled at lunchtime on Tuesday. Sleet and freezing rain began that night and everything was frozen Wednesday morning.

Wednesday was a mix of sleet and snow. I was able to rebook our flight for late Thursday afternoon, doubtful we'd get to leave. And this is what we woke up to this morning:

But much to our surprise, we were blessed that the sun came out and the temperature creeped up a bit so that the snow began to melt. Then we decided we'd better pack. My son arrived after lunch to drive us to the airport (my husband was stuck in Tampa and his flight home on Wednesday was also cancelled.) The roads were slushy but traffic moved freely and we arrived at the airport nearly 3 hours before our flight...which was a good thing, since it took us a half hour to check our luggage and then almost an hour to get thru the security checkpoint. But we didn't care...we were Disney-bound!!

When we landed, we both felt a sense of surreal anticipation. We are frequent WDW visitors, but because of the near-cancellation of this trip, it felt that much more exciting!

MagicBand ready for Magical Express!

We walked right on the ME bus and it quickly departed. We found the new video to be one giant advertisement for MDE, Disney Visa and DVC. Not as magical as the former video.

POP! was the second stop. Confession: we are resort snobs. We most often stay deluxe, occasionally moderate. Rarely value (hubby has an aversion.) But tonight, pulling into POP!, we were ecstatic!

In the 70s building, score!!

Emily has a "bucket list" of Disney desserts, and one which she has been wanting to try is the Mickey ganache tart at the Art of Animation food court. So that's where we headed for dinner. A cheeseburger was not my first preference, but the lines at the other options were super-long.

Sadly, the Mickey tart was not as good as it looked.

Saw this window on our walk back:

When we opened our door, we found this suitcase surprise:

The surprise was this was NOT our suitcase! We had hauled our own bags on ME and brought them to our room. Funny thing, the name on the suitcase was for a woman with my same first name and a similar sounding last name. So I called bell services who couldn't even find said woman on their list, but sent a bellman to pick up the bag anyway.

Got to get to sleep...big birthday tomorrow at MK!

Someone isn't going to be very happy without that suitcase!

I'm following! I can't believe the pic of the snow in Atlanta you posted! That's a lot of white stuff for Atlanta! Glad you made it safely to Orlando! This is going to be a wonderful birthday for you!

We did not get as early as a start as I'd planned, meaning no time for breakfast in the food court. So we headed to the bus stop and walked on one of the new bendy buses!

More in a moment... MK welcome show starting! Smokey Miller today!
