Power Glitch at Hollywood Studio

Yes, DHS experienced a quick power surge/outage today. Not as big as the one that happened last Sunday at 9:30pm that affected the entire resort, but it did result in all attractions essentially going down including attractions like Lights Motors Action which rely on the computer systems to communicate to each other. The glitch causes most of these computer systems to reset or most ride systems to automatically disconnect the power for safety. As a result, most large scale rides must be evacuated.

The thing is Disney should not have these problems. I know that things happen, and they will happen. I have just never heard of these technical issues before. I just do not want it to become a regular occurrence to have power outages.

I would imagine this is something they would actually put money into fixing. It likely comes from a different pool of money as well in terms of budgeting.

Not surprising, esp. in the Summer months when people use a ton of energy for A/C and whatnot. Doesn't anyone remember the entirety of NYC going black? I think it has less to do w/ maintenance and more to do with overuse of energy everywhere.

REALLY not starting an environmental debate here, just putting in my two cents! :)

Disney only produces a small portion of the power consumed by the resort these days. And Reedy Creek is responsible for most (if not all) of the power distribution infrastructure on property, which must always meet code and other regulations.

To say that this is Disney's problem is more than likely not a correct placement of blame. Power outages happen. Brown-outs happen. In central Florida, in the summer, there is a LOT of power being consumed, and WDW shares a grid with areas outside property, so they're subject to failures anywhere in the area.

It could have been a brief outage, but if the power was off long enough to trigger fail-safes and computer system shutdowns, they have no choice but to evacuate rides. Think of each ride like a mega-version of your computer. When the power goes out long enough for the computer to shut down, the restart process is often longer because the OS is checking everything to make sure all systems are go. Same for a ride. Very complicated computer systems are running everything, and we all want to be darn sure they come back up in perfect order.

No worries, because there's nothing political or "environmental" about the situation. Just as you said, and as I said in my last post, the summer months produce a huge need for energy, and the grid can only handle so much.

Or, an animal could have also gotten into a transformer or substation and shorted out a phase. Raccoons do that here quite often.

Or a car could have hit a power pole, causing a distribution route to go down, which requires a substation to have switches thrown (manually or automatically) to re-route power. That takes time.

Any number of things can cause a power outage like this. And unless they have instantaneous battery UPS systems in place at every single attraction, with generators to back them up, it will always trigger a chain reaction.

I know with most attractions containing audio animatronics, a disconnect in power results in all the animatronics to stop. Normally, even at night, the fluid still ruins through the animatronics to keep things fluid. Turning them off, disrupts that. With most of the roller coasters and high tech rides, disconnecting the power causes all break mechanisms to close to prevent trains from potentially crashing into other trains in case the brakes can't be triggered. Rides like Space Mountain and Big Thunder Mountain have to reset each one of these brakes.

Part of the problem today is that everyone acts like a roving reporter and something is up on Twitter two seconds later, go forward, and every little thing is reported. These things have always happened, but now any and everything is thrown up online. While TDO has plenty of reason to have blame thrown on them for many things nowadays, incidents like this occur and have occurred for years, it's just that those in the park at the given time were the only ones to notice.

I wonder what it is like being on TOT in the elevator shaft and you are falling downward on ride and the electricity goes out? Abrupt stop?
