Pros & Cons of resale

Hey everyone!! We've been doing a TON of research on DVC and we have a lot of our questions answered. However we do have questions about resale. As far as we can see, it seems to make so much sense to purchase resale from a financial standpoint. We have heard that you cannot trade it for cruises or Disneyland, but we would like to know all the pros and cons of buying resale.
- Is the ownership basically the same as purchasing directly through Disney?
- what are the reputable resalers (we've heard of The Timeshare Store)
- As far as Disney knows, does ownership completely transfer to you (like a house or car)
- Can you book out as far as owners who bought directly through Disney?
- Does the expiration date carryover
- Ect....

Or any other information you think would be helpful. I appreciate the help fellow Disney Fans!!!

When you buy resale, It will take much longer to get into the DVC system and have your points (resales typically take 6-8 weeks), and you can't make a reservation until then. However, you will save money buying resale.

If you buy resale, you cant use Vacation Points to make reservations within the Concierge Collection, the Disney Collection or the Adventurer Collection. Other than that, you are treated exactly the same.

The Timeshare Store has the best customer service, but I would look at All the major resales sites.

I purchased my first DVC points from Disney. I later added 100 points from the resale market from The Timeshare Store. I got my points before Disney put the restrictions on what resale points could be used for, so it was not an issue then. Now I am looking at adding an additional 100 points and am only looking at the resell market. If I need to use those points for Concierge Collection, the Disney Collection or the Adventurer Collection I would "rent" out the points and use that money to pay for the vacation wanted.

Thanks for the info guys. The 6-8 weeks wouldn't be an issue as we are planning to bank our first year points. And I am familiar with the Concierge and Adventurers Collection, but what is the Disney Collection? Is this the cruises and Disneyland?

And since "DVCOwner" brought up renting, how easy is renting out your points and how do you do it? Is it done through Disney, through another company or do you do it yourself? How much are DVC points being rented for?

I'm sorry if I'm asking a lot of questions (and getting off base from the original topic), but your information is helpful. Thanks for your help!

Yes, Disney Collection are Disney Destinations that you otherwise pay cash for - regular rooms at WDW, DL, DCL, ABD, even international parks.

I'm sure others can give better answers about renting. Normal range is $10-$13 a point. They are private agreements between yourself and the renter (and/or company you may go through), not through Disney. You are making a reservation for someone in their name. I've only ever done with family, I've rented to them and from them, so it was honor system with payment. With a stranger though, you'll want some sort of agreement. For that reason, I'd consider a third party rental company if I ever had excess points on hand. Wish I had that problem though ;)

Renting can be tricky. You can, as mentioned, go through a third party. At times, they may want a certain property and yours may not be in demand. That can also affect point to dollar ratio. Those companies also want a set point commitment of say 50 points minimum.
Recently, I rented my points to a member of this forum whom I have never met. The upside is that they are always on here, and I rented them only the points needed. I made the reservation, they sent me the payment, and I then gave them the confirmation number. They got great accommodations for less money, and I was able to use that for my next Disney cruise. It was a win for everyone!!

I have found that trading in points is not an efficient use of your DVC points. I posted this in another thread:

I was looking at the cost to trade in DVC points for a cruise and I think your plan makes more sense. It would cost me about 500 DVC points to trade in for a 7 night Caribbean cruise for 2 next June on the Fantasy in an ocean view stateroom. I looked the cost up on the DCL sight and it would cost under $4,000 to pay cash for the cruise. If I could rent my points for more than $8 it would be better to rent the points and pay cash for the cruise. I think some of the bigger rental sights pay $10 or $11 for your points with no fees. That's a gain of between $1,000 and $1,500 over trading in for the cruise.

In general the trade in option is nice, but not a very good deal. IMHO If you think you may want to do a mix of things other than WDW DVC and you may only visit WDW every other year you are better off buying half as many points as you need and banking and borrowing to use DVC every other year. In the off year you can take a cruise, visit DLR or go on a safari and pay cash. That will almost always come out significantly cheaper than using DVC points for trade in.

Resale is a great way to go to save a ton of money. I purchased my DVC 3 years ago and only paid
$50 a point for OKW. I already have had vacations at Aulani twice, OKW and AKL. I have almost 30 years of vacations to go and it's already paid for most of my initial investment.

I purchased My Dvc membership thru the Timeshare store and was Really pleased with them on every level.

I spent a day at the Dvc walkthru at the local mall and when we sat down to talk numbers we werent surprised...I had done my homework and knew what we were getting into.

I asked what the benefit was by buying direct as opposed to The Timeshare store and The poor salepersons eyes glazed over .

By going thru a resellers I saved almost %50 ...thats HUGE to me anyway. Some people have more money than sense.

We bought just before the rules change and Got in with less than a month to spare.

The upside since the new rules is that it seems to have driven down the resale cost .

The wait will feel like FOREVER if you go resale But just remember how much money youll be saving and it will make it a little easier to swallow.

I think the real push for us was that we were going Every year anyway and this gave us the chance to stay at some new resorts that would would never pay to stay at due to the cost .

Weve been 2 times now as Dvcers and stayed at Saratoga, and Old Key and are heading down in a few weeks to finally see our Home resort Animal Kingdom... best investment we ever made!! Good luck.
