PETA buys 80 Sea World shares during IPO

The animal activist group PETA purchased 80 shares of Sea World during the recent Sea World IPO. They claim they purchased these shares so that they will have the right to attend shareholders meetings and file company petitions. Sorry, I have no link for this story. I heard this story on radio news yesterday and this is verbatim of what was said.

I hope this action leads to better treatment of their animals - or enforcement of already good treatment of their animals - rather than useless disruption.

Not a bad price of admission... The day's trading ranged from $27 to $33.52 per share. So 80 shares even at closing would have only cost $2,660 (brokerage and other fees notwithstanding). Let's hope they use it responsibly, as you say!

80 shares is virtually meaningless.
As PETA said, their shares will give them access to shareholders' meetings. They will use such opportunities to petition the company to release all their animals back to the wild.

Anyone with a brain and some common sense knows that Sea World will never release their orcas.
Also, why on Earth would shareholders ever decide to gt rid of the biggest draw that the company has to offer?

At most, PETA has a chance to get publicity.

People will take them seriously if they use this responsibly and don't do the things you said they will do and focus on enforcing the ethical treatment of their animals, instead of demanding that the animals be freed.

That's a big if. One of PETAs main issues over the years has been freeing the orcas from Sea World parks.
You are taking the optimistic view of this, which is fine.
I just think it'll turn into nothing more than a big publicity stunt for PETA.

Me too. The Orcas are safer under Sea World captivity. In the wild they could be hunted. Or maybe I watch Whale Wars too much? So the focus should be making the lives of captive orcas better, rather than freeing them.

Of course, and either way they handle it - it's just that. But that's enough to get heard.

You can't buy a magazine ad for such a wide audience for $2660 these days. ;)
Don't get me wrong, I think it's a brilliant move on PETAs part. What better way to get their message out there.
Kind of like a group of militant vegetarians buying stock in McDonalds.

LOL! Yup, exactly.

Look, PETA's controversial. Their heart is in the right place I guess. But it'll be a cold day in h*ll before I give up my steak. ;)

You're assuming, incorrectly, that the purpose of PETA is too help animals in any practical way. It is not. It is to continue its own existence as an organization, which requires taking out the most extreme positions it can and getting the most press attention that it can. They will never do anything "responsibly" because it is not in their interest.

Excellent way if putting it. Wish I could have formed that thought myself!

They can demand [freeing the whales] all they want. Doesn't mean anyone's going to listen. ;)

Causing disruption and demanding animal freedom is counter-productive and won't help make things better for the animals. If PETA really cares about the animals in Sea World's captivity, they have the power to actually help and be effective, if they choose to be. Instead of being counter productive, they can help by doing the following:

(a) Have their members volunteer to systematically monitor, record, and observe the parks' handling of its animals, reporting violation of laws and informing media of observed inhumane treatment or cruelty of its animals.

(b) Work with company personnel of all hierarchy levels to suggest, propose, and implement ways to improve the lives and living conditions of its animals.

(c) Work with the company to campaign for the education and promotion of animal conservation. The message that dolphins and whales are joined by human beings as part of Earth's species of socially intelligent life must be communicated aggressively.

(d) PETA must recognize that animals in capivity are safer than animals living in the wild, whom stand the chance of being killed by fisheries, hunters, poachers, other animals, or contaminates and other environmental hazards; and that water mammals in captivity have double the average life expectancy than those in the wild.

The problem with these suggestions is that SeaWorld is essentially at the forefront of their field. The care of their animals is SeaWorld's top priority, even if it inconveniences customers.
