28 days! And last night, I sprained my ankle.

:( I'm excited. 28 days till my trip to WDW, staying at the Poly (first time!) and... last night, in a frantic, panicked moment, I mis-stepped out of my front door and fell. Half of my foot landed on the "Welcome" mat and the other half? yeah... not so much. I fell on my side, but in the process twisted my ankle up pretty bad. It instantly swelled and this morning, there's already black and blue marks. (In case you're wondering why I was frantic/panicked/crazy/not paying attention- my indoor only cat got out of the house and I couldn't find her)

My point in posting this: How the heck do I continue my walking/jogging/training for WDW with a jacked up ankle? :(

Any tips would be greatly appreciated. I've been steady on walking 1-3 miles a day, and right now, walking half a flight of stairs is agony.

Thanks in advance. :\

I think it goes without saying but obviously you need to focus on you first, the trip later. That said, if you hurt your ankle bad enough that you won't be able to walk... there are at least other options (wheelchair). I'd recommend visiting your doctor though because if it's just a sprain you may be ok enough in 28 days to walk on it with a brace or something. :)

I agree I think you should focus on getting well. I know you want to train and prepare for your trip but you also want to be able to enjoy it and all. While I have never sprained my ankle-knock on wood-I would imagine if you push it now it will only get worst. Save the training until you are ready but for the moment go to the doctor, get it checked out and listen to what they have to say.

Rest, Ice, Compress, Elevate. Ice for 15-30 mins a few times a day. Keep your ankle elevated above your heart while or after icing for 15-30. Try and take it easy. If there is too much swelling you can always take an anti-inflammatory (ibuprofen), it should help with the pain a bit too. I play a lot of basketball so I've had my fair share of ankle injuries and my father is a doctor so I have been told these instructions many many times. If it doesn't get any better in the next 3-4 days I'd get an x-ray just to make sure there is no fracture. Mainly just take it easy for a while. Hope this helps!

Thanks guys. :( Wasn't actually gonna see a doctor, but will now. My boss (I work for a chiropractor) is going to look at it this afternoon and I have an appointment tomorrow at my regular Doctors.

Get an air cast. You can wear a shoe over it and it stabilized the ankle. I had a horrible sprain and was starting a new job where I was on my feet all day. The doctor prescribed the air cast and I was able to get through it.

This is what I was going to say. I've had my fair share of ankle sprains as well, both mild and requiring crutches. If you do not care for it now and try to stick with your exercise routine, you may injure it further and really muck up your trip. 28 days is plenty of time for it to heal and for you to gradually get back to your walking routine. If it's sore when you start up again (and you've confirmed it's not broken), I recommend an ankle sleeve for added support. ( I ran a marathon with one a year after ankle surgery.)

Update! My boss was able to check it out and said I managed to pull two tendons in my ankle. Nothing broken, thankfully, just bruising and swelling. He said three to six weeks recovery...and no walking jogging training for two weeks at least. :( he stretched and worked on the foot and ankle for nearly an hour ( did I mention my boss is awesome?) and then taped it with athletic tape...leukotape, if you've heard of it. He's going to adjust the foot and ankle twice a week and retape it as needed.

Thanks for your advice, guys.

I'm glad your ankle is not broken. I'm sure that is a relief. Now that you know you are ok, did your cat come back?

My daughter was diagnosed with mono about a month ago. It stays in the system for around 3 months. It was going to be cutting it really close because our trip is in June. Then about 3 weeks ago she stepped in a grate and twisted her ankle. OMG did that thing swell up. It was one giant bruise from her ankle down to the toes. I took her to the dr and thankfully it wasn't broken. She is able to walk now, it's still tender. She can't sit cross legged and it's still bruised. But everything should be hunky dorry for the upcoming trip!

Glad to hear its not broken....take some time and stay off your feet!!! Rest up before the vacation, Hopefully by the time you are heading on vacation you will feel a lot better. But I am so glad to hear you did not break it! That would have been horrible.

I have badly sprained my ankle several times. You should be feeling better by the time you go but your ankle probably will get swollen while walking in Disney.
