The resort board community thread got me thinking (special thanks to the prompting of @G00fyDad :))...we've had a lot of cake threads of late...how to's as well as sharing pics. I know there's an old gallery style thread that comes up now and then with cake pics, but I was thinking it could be helpful to have a dedicated thread for everything from WDW & Disney related cake ordering help, talk, pics, and any other info concerning WDW/Disney & cakes.

Now, I can't really take credit for much of the 'how to' as I borrow the majority of that from Carrie's site and even ask her questions from time to time. http://disneytravelbabble.com/how-to/order-cake/ Still, I thought it might be nice to have something like the Disboard's Cake Chatter over here. I mean, why send people over there when a good handful of the WDWMagic members have experience ordering custom fancy cakes from the WDW bakeries as well as info on the outside bakeries that will deliver to WDW.

I'll leave voting open for a week. I'd also love ideas for thread names as well as info you'd like to see if you're on board with this idea.

We are going August 16-25. Our anniversary is August 21. Our current plan is the Brown Derby for lunch and then my mom is taking the kids overnight and we are bar hopping in DTD.

DHS is the park with the most limited cake options, but I have seen a few fancy cakes pop up here and there. I can do some digging if you want cake at HBD. I recall that BW bakery will let you pick up cakes... i.e. not just room or restaurant delivery ... so it may be that people are picking up cakes before entering the park. I can also look into DTD.

Thank you so much! Let me think about it! Half of me wants to celebrate with the kids and half does not;)

I ordered a cake for our DDs birthday at Spirit of Aloha  inedible... Got a refund.
Gave Disney a second chance 7 years later ordered a cake for DDs birthday at Disneyland. Cute but more frosting than cake.
I give up.... never again.

I've read of similar experiences from others. Obviously, not a ton of cases like this, but clearly a turn off if you wind up being the unlucky one. I have heard that the non-fondant covered cakes have a higher buttercream ratio and I know their buttercream is on the sweet side. Now, I am one of those people who love that (not that fondant isn't also super sweet), but it's just not for everyone. I have also heard a few stories about the physical cake being everything from tasteless to poor texture. Again...some may be a bad batch of batter and some is personal preference. I have some people who don't love my personal cakes because they don't care for the heaviness of pound cake, regardless of flavor.

I know part of why I looked into all of this in the first place is because I don't like the taste of the more basic WDW podium cakes. I think those may be pre frozen...which can change the texture and flavor.

Oh well, I guess this is at least a good example of how they don't always turn out well.

I'll still look into it as I know this question still comes up from time to time. I can't post it from my phone, but they have a cute white chocolate Mickey and Minnie wedding/anniversary topper :)

And we seriously are not picky - usually haven't met a cake we didn't like. Heck we even liked the frozen McDonalds birthday cakes (remember those :)). My favorite frosting is the buttercream just don't give me the healthy "bettercream" blech.

Hooray! I am toying with the idea of ordering a special cake for DD for her birthday, while we are there! Hopefully people will post lots of pictures to give me ideas. Hopefully, I will avoid the blechy cake...sorry, @WDW 3. That really stinks, especially since you can't get a do over, just a refund. Doesn't change the fact you will always remember yuck cake.

Sometimes cake is just bad...even with well tested recipes. I know every now and then my chocolate cake recipe can go wrong and DH will say something like "honey, it's a great looking cake, but it kinda tastes like chocolate dirt." Doesn't happen often, but when it does- YUCK! I had heard they were playing with the frosting a while back..i.e. some people seemed to be getting what was a combo of whipped cream and buttercream or all whipped cream. While it's lighter, I'm not a fan of that and definitely would not be a repeat customer if they gave me a cake with that stuff. Ewwwww :(

I am in the process of compiling photos (which is a big job since there are lots of pics and themes out there), so hopefully that will help. If there is a particular character or theme you're interested in, I can try and make sure I find some things in that vein.
