Tokyo dining

So we are surprising our 8 yr old with a trip to Disney for his birthday. I have booked Tokyo dining since he loves ALL things Japan. I just have a couple of questions....

Has anyone eaten there recently? We have never eaten there since you can get Japanese pretty much anywhere now.

I want to order a cake since it is his actually birthday day. Do they do any special cakes or just a standard frosted cake? I have never ordered a cake before.

Thanks

Well i would tell you that unless you are planning on eating all sushi you might want to consider Teppan Edo since they have more options. Also if its sushi you want I would go to Kimono's (Swan) or Kona cafe/Island (Poly) because I find the options, price and quality to be much better than Tokyo Dining

I actually thought Teppan Edo had a more limited menu. Isn't it mostly hibachi? I hope I picked the right place! I was thinking sushi, tempura and udon etc.

We are sushi/sashimi lovers! We found the fish to be average here. I would take @NiarrNDisney advice and try somewhere else. Where ever you end up I am sure you will have an awesome time! Cheers:)

Agreed. The sushi at kimonos is much better. Although outside the park I would say its fairly well themed. Also a much larger selection of sushi and sashimi.

I think you all are missing that the OP mentioned their son loves all things Japan. While it's debatable who had better sushi, it's hard to top Tokyo Dining in ambiance. I ate there a few years ago with my wife and we both felt it was one of the best meals we had. The experience was great(though service was sloowww). Great tempura, great sushi, most tables can see out the large windows, and for kids, I thought it was really cool that they served their food in trays shaped like airplanes.

Yes the key thing is that we are in the Japanese pavilion ( his favorite) and go to the store afterwards! He loves the sugar artist.

Ate there in December 2012; found it to be yummy food, good drinks and the service was exemplary (really!). The food itself was good; perhaps not top shelf, but certainly no complaints. Liked it so much, I ADR'ed it for the next trip.

Haven't tried at the Poly or Kimonos, but I can see how they might be better - certainly Kimonos at least. But yeah - neither are near the park! ;)

Totally understand you should do what your child prefers for their special day, what a great experience for them. If you are serious about sushi we loved Kimono's way more than the Poly, Kimono's also has karokee so it's really more a place for the parents to go imho.
