Florida now says they won't enforce a new law requiring all non-U.S. citizens to have an International Driver’s Permit along with a licence to drive.

State officials say the reason for the new law is so enforcement officers won’t have to read a language other than English on a driver’s license.
Regardless of the reasoning, it does impact drivers from other English speaking countries including Canada.
However, now the state's officials say the law might violate the Geneva Convention on Road Traffic.

The law quietly came into effect on Jan. 1 this year, but if this is the first you’ve heard about it, in Canada you’re not alone.

The Canadian Automobile Association who issues International Driver’s Permits only learned about the change this week.

“We only heard about it yesterday, so I’m not sure if it had not been made available to the public,” commented Christine Niemcyzk with CAA Saskatchewan.

Other travel agencies like Marlin Travel in Regina also heard about the changes from an email this week.

“We are surprised however we have done our best to let our passengers know,” explained Sheena Revet with Marlin Travel. “We had an e-Blast go out as well it is up on our website and our Facebook page.”

Revet added that it’s up to rental car companies to inform their customers about the change as well when booking ahead.

As of right now CAA is the only place you can get an IDP in Canada. Niemchyzk says now the organization is trying to get the information out to all Canadians who may be travelling to Florida soon.

The application costs about $25 and involves a form and passport-sized photo along with a valid provincial driver’s licence. CAA can also take those photos on site for an extra fee.

Niemcyzk says CAA is trying to lobby the state of Florida to amend this law for Canadians.

“We know that there are millions of Canadians that have driven in Florida for decades without incidents related to a lack of an international driving permit,” she commented.

This seems to have first been discovered a week ago - on a UK Disney Forum that I am on we've been discussing it since February 6th 2013, and from there/then, this has gradually been filtered around the world.

They are now apparantly looking to change it, but it supposedly cannot be changed until at least July 1st 2013 - and it should be changed so that English language licences will not need an IDP.

The main issue for Canadians seemed that it looked like their IDP cannot be used in North America - so people with Canadian licenses could not legally drive in Florida (although I think that I have read that this may have been changed today, but not 100% sure).

Wow.. I am actually happy about this.. To many deadly accidents on 1-4.
Most of the serious Disney travelers will use Magical express and should be ok... :)

It won't stop accidents - it is a document that translates a drivers license into 10 different languages making it easier for local law enforcement to read foreign licenses. The Canadians I've seen comments are upset because they are being forced to get one of these documents to translate their English license for an English speaking country. It does seem silly to make and English language driver's license do this.

This is a cut and paste from the florida DMV.

Statement from DHSMV on International Driving Permits

During the 2012 legislative session, the Florida Legislature amended section 322.04, Florida Statutes, to require visitors from outside the United States to have an International Driving Permit in order to drive lawfully in Florida. This change took effect Jan. 1, 2013.
It has come to the Department’s attention that this requirement may violate the Geneva Convention on Road Traffic (1949), an international treaty to which the United States is a signatory. Treaties to which the United States is a party preempt state laws in conflict with them.
Therefore, the Florida Highway Patrol will defer enforcement of violations of the amended statutory section until a final determination of the alignment of the amendment with the treaty can be made. Non-resident visitors to Florida who wish to drive while here will be required to have in their immediate possession a valid driver license issued in his or her name from another state or territory of the U.S. or from their country of residence. However, the FHP will not take enforcement action based solely on the lack of an International Driving Permit.

You apply for one here(in Canada) at CAA or contacting the government and by the sounds of it it doesn't matter about your driving record as long as you have a valid license so basically its easy enough to get but its just one more cost

Can't believe this is news to anyone. I've known about and gotten an international driving permit years ago for when I traveled to other countries. I thought it was accepted that you needed to do that if you traveled anywhere beyond your home country... For anyone in North, Central or South America the US also accepts the Inter-American Driving Permit though that wont help people from other places like Europe.
