Florida now says they won't enforce a new law requiring all non-U.S. citizens to have an International Driver’s Permit along with a licence to drive.
State officials say the reason for the new law is so enforcement officers won’t have to read a language other than English on a driver’s license.
Regardless of the reasoning, it does impact drivers from other English speaking countries including Canada.
However, now the state's officials say the law might violate the Geneva Convention on Road Traffic.
The law quietly came into effect on Jan. 1 this year, but if this is the first you’ve heard about it, in Canada you’re not alone.
The Canadian Automobile Association who issues International Driver’s Permits only learned about the change this week.
“We only heard about it yesterday, so I’m not sure if it had not been made available to the public,” commented Christine Niemcyzk with CAA Saskatchewan.
Other travel agencies like Marlin Travel in Regina also heard about the changes from an email this week.
“We are surprised however we have done our best to let our passengers know,” explained Sheena Revet with Marlin Travel. “We had an e-Blast go out as well it is up on our website and our Facebook page.”
Revet added that it’s up to rental car companies to inform their customers about the change as well when booking ahead.
As of right now CAA is the only place you can get an IDP in Canada. Niemchyzk says now the organization is trying to get the information out to all Canadians who may be travelling to Florida soon.
The application costs about $25 and involves a form and passport-sized photo along with a valid provincial driver’s licence. CAA can also take those photos on site for an extra fee.
Niemcyzk says CAA is trying to lobby the state of Florida to amend this law for Canadians.
“We know that there are millions of Canadians that have driven in Florida for decades without incidents related to a lack of an international driving permit,” she commented.
