I know, here we go,Hatters back on the drink mode. Last year was my first time at this quaint bar, nestled in the Mexican souvenirs. I roughly knew what I wanted to order, but I was astonished at the amount of tequilas that was available. 33 Blancos..32 Reposados...26 Anejos...and 14 specialities..Hence the tequila flight is a great choice for beginners. Now to my question. Are they any expert tequila drinkers out there, and if so,which ones are worth trying on my next visit.;)

Websites with tequila reviews like Tequila.net might be of some help as they have ratings and reviews.

Now, on top of that...I have never talked tequila with anyone at La Cava, but I was wondering if it's staffed w/tequila experts. I know the website refers to them as "mixologists," but I was wondering if any of them were actually tequila experts like you'd find at place like Isla Tequila bar in Vegas. Just thinking something like this would help.

I'm by no means a tequila expert, but I like Herradura and Cazadores. They're two brands where I think the blanco, reposado and añjeo varieties are all good, so you can choose whichever variety you generally prefer.

A side note: it's so refreshing to see a thread about La Cava del Tequila that is not about the margaritas. It's so rare that we actually discuss the true specialty of the bar.

Thank you ! I agree. It was an eye opener for me in Tijuana when I hit the tequila shop.I love malt whiskeys and have been to quite a few distilleries so this was an education to me.;)

Yep. The dude behind the bar heard me talking with my DW the tequilas behind the bar,and whilst he was shaking & baking,he told me his favourites. He kinda looked older than me ( now that is old ) and had a scar down his cheek, bad looking hombre.Love getting educated about alcohol.Cheers!

Maybe I should have you recommend some whiskys. I like Macallan 12 (and older, but I'm too cheap to buy the 18) and Oban. I can't handle the really smoky stuff like Lagavulin. What else should I look for?

Hmm, Well Montana woman, I like your choice of Macallan 12 year old,not a big fan of Oban, tastes too much like Jura Malt. However I am a big lover of Islay Malts like Lagavulin, Laphroiag,Bowmore, etc. But if your fond of Macallan then " The Glenlivet " is a must. And ( being a Scotsman ) is very good value for money. It has a lovely aroma when you nose it,then the taste is of honey and heather, with a long lasting finish.;)

That's a good one! I do like Glenlivet but for some reason I usually pass it over in favor of Macallan or Glenfiddich when I'm shopping. I'll keep in mind to switch it up next time.
Yeh.The Glenlivet & Glenmorangie ( pronounced Glen Mor Angie ) are popular but I think over rated.( my opinion only ) If you see "Highland Park " and it's not too expensive, give it a try.Its the only Malt from Orkney and is in a square shaped bottle.
