I'm planning a trip in August '13 and I'd like to know the best time to buy my airline tickets. I depart from NYC-JFK. The cheapest I've seen has been $288. Does it get any cheaper, or is now the time to buy? Thanks for the help.

Welcome I don't know other than stanby the cheapeat tickets but check everywhere AAA priceline Orbitz inividual airlines so many others but chech them all. Hope you get a good deal. I'm driving this trip if gas goes to $4 a gallon we figure $300 round trip including the time down there and about $120 for motels up and down. We need 4 tickets so it's so much cheaper to drive and we have the time in fact it's getting to the point of use it or loose it

Is it common for JFK to have the highest prices of all three NYC-area airports?
I would say NO. I am a Staten Islander and we fly out of Newark all the time. I always price Jet Blue out of JFK and they are consistantly cheaper than United out of Newark. We opt to fly out of Newark because of convenience.

I rarely fly out of JFK because I find it intimidating - I always opt for either LaGuardia since it is so much smaller (and I get a great view of CitiField from the air) or MacArthur in Islip since it is so much closer to my house. I find that Southwest has the best rates from NY, and they don't fly out of JFK. Actually I just checked JetBlue's website and they are booking for all of August and some days have flights out of LGA around $130. Good luck!

Thanks for this helpful info. Based on your experience, do you believe this price will fluctuate much between now and August?
Last August I paid $299.50 for air EWR to MCO on Jetblue. I purchased the tickets January 2, 2012 and we traveled August 26 to September 1. I checked the flights often to see if the cost would go down, Jetblue will credit your account, and it had gone up slightly.

To me you have to weigh the convenience vs. the price.
As others have mentioned flying out of other airports is often cheaper.

We fly out of Bradley (CT) and we've probably been averaging 225-250 round trip for what to us are very desirable times (a very early flight in and a late flight out) over the last 7 years.

If our family of 4 can travel round trip at those times for under a thousand I'm pretty happy.

So to answer your question $288.00 round trip isn't too bad.

That is my price point as well - I allocate $1,000 to airfare in total and if we have to go over I am not pleased!! Alas, I recall a few years ago when it averaged $800 for the family but I don't think we will see those days again.

Its so hard to tell. I usually book around $250. I missed the cheap tixs this last trip - or so I thought. So I booked when it was like $320 a tix. It was through Air Tran. And then as the prices came down, they adjusted it for me and credited me with an Air Tran credit. They did this 3 separate times as the flight kept coming down in price. I ended up getting enough credit to book another ticket.

I hit it big time last year and got 4 round trip at a total of just under 900 bucks (with Southwest - our first time) and splurged and added the early bird seating ;) SCORE!

$288 doesn't seem too bad at all.

I'm flying out of Bradley at the end of May and on Southwest we found round trip tickets for $250 a person but that is only because we are taking a very earlier flight (leaving at 6am) and a late fight the way back (wont be back home until 11:50pm). If we weren't doing those flights the price for our tickets would be about $50 more.
