Marvel Replacement - DC Comics

No sooner do I post about what I wouldn't do for DC Comics Island, then I hear the following rumor. Universal Creative has been doing some talking to Warner Bros and DC about the possibility of adding themed attractions to IOA. Trying to work out some deal that can allow Sucks Flags to keep their current license.

I've seen this rumor elsewhere, and I'm still not buying it. Sounds like a DC fanboy's daydreaming more than anything else. Universal actually wanted a Batman area in IOA, once upon a time, but those days are long gone. And they simply don't need a replacement for Marvel.

I just noticed about a month ago that the restrooms on the side of Mummy's building have Gotham something on them, and the style is very reminiscent of the Burton movies. Doesn't really mean anything, but its related to the thread title and I hadn't noticed it before and thought it was cool.

But yes, DC (or anything, for that matter) won't be replacing Marvel as the theme in Super Hero Island at Islands of Adventure any time soon, if ever.

That is only because those restrooms are in the New York section and way before Batman even existed New York City's nickname was Gotham.

There doesn't need to be more rides on this planet named "Superman", "Batman", "The Dark Knight", etc.

Marvel should always stay. Always. Why are people always thinking of things to replace Marvel Superhero Island....?

It's a rumor that came about after the Marvel acquisition by Disney but it has zero chance of happening. Universal is thrilled with the Marvel deal they have and there is no way they will give it up. End of story.

Never say never. If Disney wants the Marvel rights bad enough, they'll pay dearly for them, and I wouldn't see Universal turning them down...especially if they indeed had an option to replace it with a similar franchise: DC Comics. After all, that was the original concept for the land.

Disney would not have to pay dearly, they would have to pay ridiculously and insanely more than that. Universal gets to set the price. Which means it'll have to be enough to pay for a license, a new land to be designed and built, the loss of money from the Island being down, and whatever extra profit they would also like to see from the deal. Disney is not about to pay for another big land like the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Islands of Adventure.

Do they like money enough to help advertise their direct competitor's product by participating in the same venture? There are more important sources of income than licensing fees. Like people buying your comics instead of Marvel's.

Something like this always raises many questions and "what ifs"...

Universal has a good product in Marvel, and they màke money off of it, but it's a direct competitors property now, and they pay them royalties...not to mention they really can't do anything with the island anymore or it becomes a breach of contract and Disney gets the rights from them then...

So if you were Universal, would you throw a number out there, go for a similar repkacement that will still bring in money, or continue to roll with what you have?

Oh...and what would be so wrong about Batman and Captain America both being featured in Universal parks? You know Marvel and DC have done crossovers numerous times. I don't see how it could hurt.

Not really an apt comparison. Universal doesn't compete directly with Marvel. Film adaptations notwithstanding, they're in a completely different industry. The fact that Disney owns Marvel is also largely irrelevant since Disney can't use Marvel in its east coast parks. So Universal has no qualms with profiting off of Marvel (and keeping it out of WDW.) I'm also not sure that last part is actually true. I mean they already updated Spider-Man.

Universal does advertise its direct competitor's products by basing attractions on other studios' films, but movies make most of their money in theaters so it doesn't matter much at that point, and of course Universal is profiting. Marvel and DC wouldn't profit from each other in the proposed situation.

Another question is, how good a deal could Universal get from DC for the use of their characters? The Universal/Marvel deal was struck when Marvel was in very bad financial shape so they likely got a very good deal from a money standpoint.

Wouldnt it be a shame if by Uni simply exploring possibilities with DC was a breach of the Marvel contract and it all rights in question reverted to Disney......
